tried Ty with some farex today. wasnt very keen on it! he would have been lucky to have 1/2 teaspoon he was screwing his face up, quiet funny actually! dont blame him for not liking it, pretty bland. might leave it for another few days or so before trying again
Morning everyone!
Had another good night with K, he slept all the way through until 5am without waking once, hooray! He doesn't really go back to sleep afterwards though which is a pain. We got up at 6:30am after a few attempts of getting him back to sleep. I prefer that to waking up 7 times a night though!! The rice cereal in the evenings really helps him through, I didn't give him any the night before last and he woke at 3:50am hungry, whereas when he does have the cereal he wakes at around 5am. He loves his rice cereal, he's such a guts and gulps it all down!
Nic - I completely forgot to say congratulations on buying a house!!! How exciting! At least you won't have to move again for a while now! Re: the Farex, I make it runnier than the box suggests. I read somewhere that babies at the start prefer their cereal to be the consistency of thickened cream. K prefers it that way rather than lumpy. Keep trying Tyron, he'll like it eventually. If he doesn't like Farex though, you could try the Rafferty's one, K really likes it.
Amber - Did you notice BB are using your avatar for advertising? You're just too gorgeous! How clever that Myles is pulling himself up! You'll have to start watching where you put things now!
Saffi - That's great you have decided to go off the meds, now you will have more time to yourself! How did L go at the weigh in?

I bought the "from 4 months one" a while ago and thats what i gave him.
however there is a 6months on one and he is just about 6months.
Trish yeah i kept making it more runnier, the amount of ebm,water etc they say to use is no where near soft enough for first timers lol.
Nic - our paed said that if he wasn't keen on the rice cereal or if I just wanted to skip it I could go straight to vegies (single to start with ie not mixed together in case of reactions, which I'm sure you already know from Nixon). I'm gonig to try L on the rice cereal first but if he doesn't rate it, will go to vegies.

Nickers- congrats on house! I think the 4 mths farex package is just the older packaging. They are changing all the 'from 4 mths' to 'from 6mths' due the the new recommendation of exclusive BF/FF for 6 months. Pretty sure it is the same stuff.

Me? Blergh. Lu has had temp for 2 days, peaked at 39.9 last night. Grizzly, sad, wont be put down. Has been BF'ing 2hrly for 48hrs. My nips hurt. Saw doc this am, just a virus and he told me to keep feeding her 2 hourly if she wants it to keep her hydrated. Can't wait till this bug is over, i will never whinge about her waking once or twice in the night again.....
So hanging out on the couch with dr phil today.....

Can anyone tell me does it matter how much they drink now or should I just chill out and let him have what he wants? First timmer so not sure. Also how much solids should they have?
Anyway I'd better go as Ethan thinks that daddy's xbox is a great toy. I put him at the other side of the room but he just rolls until he gets to what he wants.

Just tried Max on rice cereal. Hated it.... so much so that he was dry reaching and then chucked it up! Don't know if it was disgust or whether he was still full from the BF beforehand.... how long should you leave it to give solids after you have milk fed?

Just back from the Solids Workshop and have a whole lot of information. Apparently bubs have way more tastebuds than adults so stuff that tastes blah to us wouldn't to babies. Anyway, learnt a lot and am ready to start putting it into practice. One thing they did say with the commercial food packaging is to add 2 months to whatever the label says. So if it says 4 months you should really be using it at 6 months etc. There are 2 different Farex types (one for 4 months and one for 6 months). I am not sure what the differences are.
DH came along too. Decided he wanted a family day and seeing that he will be introducing a lot of solids while he is looking after L was good for him to go.
At Mothers Group yesterday they said that we should be starting to get bubs to drink water from a cup. Apparently BF bubs do better with the straw cups. The no spill valves aren't recommended to start with. Going to buy a cup on the weekend.
Also talked about teething and that should start to brush his teeth with low fluoride paste from about 6 months. I think this is specific to Qld as we don't have fluoride in our water. Anyway, off to buy brushes and paste too.

Night from hell here. L woke up screaming at midnight. Changed him and while doing that he pee'd on me! Anyway, gave him a full bottle and he slept until 4am. Then up again and fed him again. DH then got him up at 6.30am. Anyway, I was able to sleep in until 10am!
Trish - L weighed in at 7.59kg. When I plotted it he came in exactly on the 50th percentile. So happy with that.
Anyway, too excited with all the new info I have.

At our ABA meeting on Monday, they said you don't need to offer water to a b'fed baby this early...there's enough water in our milk. I gave it to DD at about this age though cause I was 'told' to. Dunno if I'd bother this time, one less thing to worry about! And yes, she had a straw first, then the 'sippy cup' (personal peeve - I HATE that term...so American to me...) much later.:

Another interesting thing I learnt is that babies and young children shouldn't drink bottled water. There's something in the make up of it that's no good for them. Cooled, boiled tap water is best. A sip here and there for a bigger kid is no biggie but they shouldn't drink the whole thing. Interesting, I didn't know that....

Well, I have tried a new day sleeping method on K! He has not been sleeping any more than 40 - 50 minutes during the day for a couple of weeks now and he is driving me nuts! I stumbled across a suggestion on another site when I was Googling something unrelated (must have been meant to be ;)). A mum said that she sneaks in just before the first 40 minute cycle is about to end and as soon as she hears stirring she pats her bub for around 30 seconds then sneaks back out. I just tried this before (although I patted for 60 seconds to be on the safe side!) and he has been asleep so far for an hour and 20 minutes!!! That's the first time he has napped that long in ages :confetti:. I will definitely be trying that again, hopefully he will learn to work it out himself soon.
Ange - Oh no, poor Lu and you! :hug: It's awful when they're so sick. You must be feeling so exhausted. I hope you are resting up and not doing any housework or cooking. I hope Lu gets better really soon.
Saffi - The food workshop sounds like it was really interesting. WTG on Lachlan's weight!!! Your hard work has well and truly paid off!
Julia - What a bummer Max didn't like the rice cereal :(. What brand did you try? You could try putting some stewed pear or something else in with it. I usually give K his cereal around an hour after his b'feed.
Alz - That's great Ethan loves his veggies! I'd try offering his bottle before his solids, that way you know he is getting enough. I don't know if there is a "correct" order, but if he's not taking all of his bottle it may be worth experimenting with switching the order around and offering bottle first, then solids. Sounds like he is going great :)
Nic - I've got no idea what the difference between the 4 month and 6 month cereals are. Maybe check the ingredients on the boxes? Sorry I'm no help!
Amber - I hope you had a nice yoga session this morning, it sounds so relaxing!

i'm ratty anyway now because since my last attempt, Captain Boogedy has driven me round the twist. I know it's the teething dance but he's been whinging, rubbing his face in the carpet, crying and pork-chopping all afternoon. i dosed him on chamomilla put him to bed again. poor kid. i love his little monkey face but he sure knows how to pushy my buttons.
ange - hang in there girlie. the guni must be deriving massive comfort from hanging off you, so you're doing a great job. permission granted to hang out with Dr P and eat more!
julia - i found that if i tried boob & cereal in one hit it was hurl central. i agree about the 45m to 1hr after thing.
he tried pear this morning and looked very undecided about the whole thing. he licked a pear baton and turfed it, then gingerly nibbled at EBM & pear puree. not convinced is he. his face was priceless. it was that, 'hmmm... this is... yucky but... kinda nice... wait... what is it?'
i'm trying to decide whether his ratty afternoon is about the pears or whether it's just tired and teething. *shrug*

Well that's what we were asking Trish - when do they need water? Apparently BF babies don't until much later on...say 9-12 months, even later depending on how much they're feeding. One mum there with older kids (and an ABA counsellor) said her babies never had it :dunno:. Apparently breast milk will adjust to suit the babies needs and if a baby is thirsty, they will take the watery foremilk and leave the rest, just to quench their thirst.
With DD I offered water when she was on about 2 meals a day of solids. Having said that, when I think back, she barely touched it till she was much older.
WTG on the nap! I have heard of that technique actually. It was suggested to me with DD but I can't remember if we had any success with it. L had one great sleep today, over 2 hours but then only about an hour this arvo. When I went in to try to resettle him he wouldn't resettle. It was only when I went in to get him up that I realised his music had stopped - it spooks him if he wakes up to silence!

I haven't had to change a pooey nappy in ages because K has decided the bath is a great place to relieve himself LOL! Almost every night he has done one in the bath, ick!

we had the 'i won't go to bed' thing last night. he usually bounces out in about 2.5 minutes with his music... try 15 minutes... hit the cot... cry.... 15 minutes... on and on. changing of the guard to DH etc. not happening. he was doing this little sad rhythmic cry. poor little lambie. i gave him baby pan and boob and that was the end of that episode...
by the time he'd run his course his 6.30 bed time had blown out to 8.20. then we had the midnight and 3.40 wakings, ending in me sleeping with him on the couch again, then at 5am *ping* ... "i'm up mummy!!"
so then he'd played until our breakfast was ready then cracked it again.
teething is so carp.
i also think that he gets sheet shock too, now that the weather is cold. we'd overcome that in summer by having him on a towel. now i'm going to have to use a hot pack or something to warm his bed in advance.

Went to bed at 6pm, woke at 7.40 screaming, ended up feeding him again, slept till about 9.30pm, awake again, patted him back to sleep, ended up dream feeding him at 10.20pm so I could go to bed, then he slept till 1.44am (I gotta stop looking at the clock...) then slept through till 5.30am, fed then back down till 7.30am.
Blaaaaaahhhh....
He's sleeping now and DD at preschool so I'm off for a nana nap...
Well, I have just decided that Max isn't teething anymore! He is still megga whingy, but he is also a day sleep machine at the moment so I'm putting it down to that. I need to stop fishing around in his mouth to see if there is anything popped through...it was making me CRAZY!
Happy to say that he slept through from 10:30pm (dreamy feed) till 6:30am. SWEET! and not even gone 8am and he's back in bed. Sorry to those out there who had shocker nights. Viv you are really copping it!
Viv to avoid 'sheet shock' I bought some flanelette sheets, so much nicer to put him down on, I want to jump in his cot with him.....!
OMG - Max has done two poo explosions in the bath recently too...spooky! He seems to enjoy it as well....gross.
I too have started to introduce the good ol 'sippy' cup (agree...carp word!) he does drink out of it, but would rather chew on it.

WHY does your baby only sleep when you are supposed to be somewhere??? She hasn't slept well for days and now she is pulling a 1 1/2hr + nap.
willow - the nurse told me that the most painful part for most babies is when the teeth are moving below the gum. the eruption is easier to relieve with chewy things and bonjela etc. that internal moving, which is evidently worse at night, is the real kicker.
i can't see any pearlies here either but i know he's trying to teeth. i've read about cases where it goes on and on for WEEKS before a tooth erupts. gah!
julia - yes, i believe it could be time for the flannelette fantastics. i used to love them as a kid.
no bath bombs here. jj is still showering with his dad every night. might i say, i will laugh so, so heartily if he drops a spray carp on dh in the shower. hehee..

Nic - that was a bad night. A good night is bed at 6-7pm, feed at 10pm, then I go to bed, feed at about 2am then sleep through till 5-6am. So on a 'good' night, I only get up to him once. From what I see here and in my November thread, that's pretty normal kinda stuff, especially for a b'fed baby. He never takes long to get back to sleep. It's either time for a feed so he feeds and is asleep before I put him back in his cot, or if he's just woken up, I give him a dummy and he goes straight back to sleep. How do I do it? I have no choice, I have to do it! I am praying with all my might that the introduction of solids in a few weeks will keep him asleep longer. DD was the same, but once she got some substantial food into her she started sleeping through. I'm determined to stick to my goal of exclusive B'feeding till 6 months though...only 3 and a bit weeks!
Viv - DD took 6-8 weeks to cut her first two teeth and they were 6 weeks of hellish nights! Everyone kept telling me it was her teeth and I didn't believe them. So this time I'm open to the idea that he's teething, but trying not to put all my eggs in that basket. He's doing all the 'teething' stuff, chewing everything he can get his hands on (including my face!) and if he can't get his hands on it, his hands will do :) He's drooling, generally more grumpy during the day (although not too bad thankfully).
Ange - same thing happening here. He only slept for about 1hr 20 mins this morning, he was getting tired so I couldn't hang him out till preschool pick up at 1pm. Put him down at 12pm and now I have to wake him to go get DD - HATE that! I guess it's better than having him overtired and cranky though. They've changed the angel icon too, I liked the flying angel better :(
Speaking of day sleeps - how many the little people doing now? The sleep guide thingo I've got says at 6 months they should only need about 2 sleeps a day of 1-1.5 hours...doesn't seem like much does it??
Hee hee, I think the bath must really relax him! LOL at the bath bomb comment, definitely a Mother's Day present I can do without! The poor boy, he does his poo then resumes happily kicking his legs only to be wrenched out of the bath.

Julia - Sounds like you had a pretty good night last night! It's horrible when they are so clingy all the time, K is having one of those days today and my arms are KILLING me from carting him everywhere.
Nic - Thankfully Joel wasn't in the bath too! That would have been a nightmare trying to pull two boys out at once lol! I don't bath them together because I don't trust Joel with K in the bath yet.
On the subject of Joel, last night he used the hose (while I wasn't looking :rolleyes:) to make a big puddle, he then trecked off and found a plank of wood. I asked him what he was doing and he said "I've got a surfboard", he then proceeded to put the plank of wood in his self-made puddle and tried "surfing" it. He was disappointed that the surf wasn't big enough lol! He has saltwater in his veins that boy! (DH & I love surfing) I have plans for him to become a pro-surfer one day, I will be his manager and travel to all the beautiful surf spots around the globe with him... *wakes up from lovely daydream*
Woohoo! I tried that patting trick again at the 40 minute mark of K's nap (he stirred slightly first) and he slept for a total of 1 hour 45 minutes! He slept for the exact same amount of time when I tried it yesterday. This is the first time in AGES that he has slept past 40 minutes :dance:

we'd love it if one or both the boys are snowboarders as we both love it too. their choice ofcourse but we will introduce it to them in a few yrs.
Willow- true, silly question that isnt it (how do u do it) ppl used to say that to me when in melb and fam etc were in syd, but i didnt know any other way and just dealt with it.
like going into hosp 3times a day for a sick bub for feeds etc, no choice but to do it.
but i admit i have missed posts along the way in the last month or so not as up on how everyone is going as i used to b! glad that those nights are only occasions for you.

What a busy day. Poor L was dragged around everywhere. He is such a trooper, hardly cried but hardly slept either. Just hoping that he sleeps well tonight.
Went to Target and got some romper suits and his first pair of shoes that were on special. Bargain.
No bath bombs here but have been pee'd on a few times. Nasty incident last night tho. Got up to L at 4am. Did his nappy and went into the kitchen to heat up a bottle. Kept the light off so as not to wake DH or the dogs that sleep in there. Walking along and stepped right on something brown and smelly. Whats worse is that I was in bare feet. EEWWWW So not only am I cleaning baby nappies but also dog do-do.
Didn't get a sippy cup but a sippy cup nozzle that you can use on the Avent bottles. We already have the handles and heaps of bottles so this is a good option.
L usually does 2 naps a day of about 1.5 hours each.
Looking forward to a day at home.

Saffi - L's sleeps sound spot on according to this sleep guide thingo I have. My L is still doing 3 usually, used to be 1.5 hours but this week they're closer to an hour, sometimes up to 2. We're in for a day like yours tomorrow. Meeting up with some of the girls in the M&L thread, can't wait but dreading the lack of sleep...
He's doing my head in today....fighting off fantasies about feeding him bowls of mashed pumpkin and him sleeping aaaaalllllll night....

Question - for those of you who use sippy cups - which ones do you use? I am having real trouble getting Tahlia to drink from a bottle again, so thought maybe I could try from a cup?
We have had the worst day today... Tahlia woke up at 4am and didnt go back to sleep till 6.30. At about 5am she filled her nappy, so I changed it... was just about to put on a new nappy and an explosion occurs... its not much fun cleaning up that type of mess during the day, let alone at 5am! She went back down till around 9am, and then only had a 20 min nap this arvo at mothers group, I think I spent from about 10.30 - 12.45 trying to get her to sleep! She has gone down now, so hopefully I dont hear from her until at least 7am! I'm wondering what is causing this.. teething maybe? or maybe she is hungry and needs some solids? I dunno!

hey - we had a bumbo accident last night.
the little monkey has been trying to get out of it for about 3 weeks so we've been sure to stick by him and only have it on the floor. last night he was playing with his bottle of pancake mix *don't ask* and it fell over. i was on the other side of the kitchen and DH was 2 feet away. anyhoo, james finally worked out how to lean all the way out and push off.....
he face planted onto the kitchen tiles. luckily his buddha gut broke his fall a little bit. he cried for about 5 seconds and was sporting a little red mark on his head. stupid thing is, i knew it was coming, and i took as many precautions as i could, just happened to be when i was too far away to dive and catch him.
so bumbo is now banned except for on his foam mat and on the carpet. i think it will have outlived its usefulness fairly shortly. he is determined to go anywhere but where i want him to be.
he can assume the crawl position but his j-lo booty is too heavy and pulls him sideways. cute. frustrating for him though.

Viv - thanks for the bumbo warning. I look at L sometimes and he is fully leaning over the side of it. His chubby thighs seem to be the only thing keeping him in.

Hoping L does some mega sleeps today as he wasn't too nice to his mum overnight. Up at 12.45am,then at 3 for a feed (yes, turned on the light in the kitchen before I went in LOL), and again at 5.30am and 6.30! Got pee'd on too while doing a nappy change. Seems DH copped one too earlier in the night.
Anyway, going to see if he wants to have a bottle and a nap. BBL
