Babies Born October 2007 #24

Morning everyone!

Hope you all had a great weekend. Ours was nice, we went and bought a new mattress from Beds for Backs, it is sooo comfortable and aligns your spine so there is no pressure anywhere. I've been waking up with my lower back in agony because our current mattress is so cr@ppy. Can't wait until our new one arrives!

K had another good night - bed at 7:30pm, slept through until 5am, had a feed then slept until 7am. I am only just starting to learn to sleep properly again! My body is so used to getting up numerous times a night that I find myself waking up frequently. I'm also getting a bit engorged since we dropped the dream feed. Oh the joys of babies!

Saffi - It sounds like you had a lot of fun with your goddaughter! It's tiring with an extra child around isn't it? Glad L likes his new toys. I bought K a Leap Frog activity centre and he loves it, it's great for a change of scenery!

Amber - Wow, Myles is so clever crawling!!! He must look so cute! Look out, once they're on the move they never stop!

Ange - How's your eye? I can't believe Lu is crawling properly either! Such a clever little chick. I look forward to K learning to move around, hopefully he will get less bored!

Nic - I'm glad Nixon's party went well! I'll have to check out your photos later. Tyron is a teething machine! It's great when they teeth quickly, at least you get it all out of the way lol!

Alz - I hope Ethan's cold is getting better. It's not nice when they're so sick.

Mo - Bummer about your phone! It's probably not the last time that will happen!

Kim - Nice to see you in here! I'm glad the girls are going well. Hope you have a great trip!

Celtic - I hope Ryan gets better soon. The poor little man has had a few colds hasn't he? Did you end up getting a humidifier?

Kellie - That's great Tahlia liked the rice cereal! Have you tried some more with her?

Willow - How is L's cold? Hopefully he is better or almost better. That's great that his sleeping is getting back to normal.

Viv - I hope you've had a better night's sleep with James.

Morning

I have huge respect now for parents with a baby and an older child. At least with babies they will have at least 1 or 2 naps during the day but the older ones - well it is go go go all the time. Our god-daughter's mum is actually expecting a baby at the end of September so she will have that situation to deal with. But Tashie is starting school next year so will only be for a few months or so.

Carp night again. Up every couple of hours again. I am pretty certain L has a cold so thats not helping and also he moves about his cot that he is always crashing into it. Does anyone else's bub move a lot in their sleep and any ideas on how to deal with it? Oh, and my other big baby has got a cold too.

Trish - won't let my DH know you have a new mattress. He has been bugging me about getting a new one for ages.

Anyway, hopefully L will have a nice long sleep today so I can get some zzz.

Saffi- Often i wake up to the sound to L banging her head on the side of the cot. I don't think there is alot you can do short of tying them down. That's the main reason i put her in a sleeping bag, she might be upside down and squished on the corner but at least she is warm.
I do wonder how i will cope with a toddler and a baby, borrowing one for the night is a great idea, although might put me off another! I'm not sure how i'll cope with being UTD and having a baby.....

Trish- So much better thanks for asking. Responded really well to the anti-viral meds. Just scabbing up nicely! Best part is i have a freezer full of mum's cooking. I won't have to cook for weeks.

Ok night here, except the 5.30am wakeup for the day.

A friend has a 5 month old and is 8 weeks pregnant! She is 40 and doesn't really have the luxury of time up her sleeve, but holy cow!

saffi - i think the boys are conspiring. another wakeful night for the monkey. still trying different things to see what will work. he also had the snuffles this morning. dh brought a cold home. meh.

who finds grobags/sleeping bags good? it's only just getting cold enough on the goldie now to look into bagging the little monkey, and i wonder if they're good.

myles - quick, crawl to the pantry and pull something out. don't tell mummee i said so...

Trish - we gave her some more yesterday, and I'll give her some more today

When do you start to make the quantity bigger? And how many days should I wait before I give her something else?

Ange - a 5 month old and pregnant! OMG! She will have her work cut out for her! A friend of mine is due at the end of June, and her 1st child hasn't even turned 1 yet!

Congrats to the bubs that are crawling! I hope Tahlia doesnt start any time soon, my house is far from child proof and I am having enough trouble with her rolling across the room as it is!

Saffi - Glad you had a great time with your god-daughter. Yup, it is hard soetimes with 2 babies. But twice as rewarding! ;) I must say, being pregnant, mainly just the first 3 months was EXHAUSTING!!! Luckily I had my Mum close by so if I was having a really yucky day or Liam was playing up a bit, she would come and help me! Ya definately need that. I Couldnt imagine having 3 at the moment tho. I think baby number 3 has been pu off for the VERY distant future!

Amber - Woot for Myles! He'll be walking next! Chels is trying so hard but still cant quite worl out the arms!

Trish - Yay on the mattress! I always think they are a great investment. We bought a new one when I found out I was pregnant with Liam. Could not handle being 9 months pregnant on a crappy mattress - LOL.

NT - Yeah I dont use a growbag yet either - I havent found it quite cold enough here yet, although the last few wekks are defintely getting there.

My little girl has a bad cold at the moment. She can hardly beathe at night poor little thing. She has only ever had 1 cold before but this one is a doozy! Using the humidifeier but I dont think its doing a lot. Just keeping her dosed up on Panadol, Fess and Baby Balsam. Just gotta ride it out.

So any body in this group planning on TTC anytime soon?

M's finally cut her 1st tooth surprisingly she wasn't that cranky but it's explains why she went off her food.

Kellie-Pretty sure you suppose to introduce new foods every 3 days or so.

Becky hope Chelsea gets better soon, that cold sounds nasty.

Having 2 kids close (very close) was damn hard at first but once you have a routine it becomes part of everyday life!

Both girls gone down to sleep....2-3 hours of peace!!! Me time begins :D

Afternoon all!
my weekend was pretty good - got to sleep for AGES on Sat night - C slept from 730 until 530! Woohoo but of course I knew it wouldnt last - down at 6 last night up at 1130,2,330 and 5 so am feeling the effects today!
Am ticked off at DH's boss - his 1 day off and he calls them all into work to discuss mistakes that have been happening - nothing that couldnt wait until this morning. Oh well - at least DH will get paid for 4 hours work when he was only there for 1.5 - beside the point but I wont push it!
Crawling - WTG on the bubs that have that motivation! I can barely get C to stay on her tummy for more than 5 mins - but that is longer than what she used to do so we are getting there. I am starting to think she will walk before she crawls though!
Solids - hmmm I wonder if I am over feeding my little bundle of.....joy! She has 3 meals a day... each between 1 and 2 ice cubes a go. She eats just about anything and is now shoving bits of toast into her mouth! Maybe she is eating too much to even think about crawling??
And of course its that time again - needles tomorrow morning :( not looking forward to it thats for sure. She has been so very very sooky lately so I cannot imagine what she will be like tomorrow.
Has anyone moved to the "stage 2" formulas? Is there any point? I have looked for info but havent found a lot.
Gro/sleeping bags - Am determined to leave C unwrapped starting Friday night. And as it is getting quite cool out here at nights I will be using a sleeping bag for her. I bought a grobag when she was about 1 month old but she has well and truly grown out of it now.
Anywya - got dishes to do and clothing to sort out - she is now too big for 00 so am sorting through the small 00, the normal 00 and the large 00(which she still fits!) - will take a while me thinks.

rebecca- i was wondering if i fed Lu too much. She has 3 meals a day. 4-6 tablespoons for breaky, 4-6 for lunch and i'd say about a metric cup for dinner! Last night she had half an avocado, 6ish T of steak brocolli and carrot, then about 4 T of yoghurt and pear!! She loves her food. If you are feeding too much then i definately am!!!! She lets me know if she wants more or if she's had enough though. I think you just have to follow their lead.

how much/often on the boob now, ange?

Ange I'm with Viv...what are you doing with feeding / boobing etc. I saw a thread on baby lead weaning and am thinking of trying that with Max. Need tips!

Max has been a shocker the last few days. Wont go there! Lets just say I don't think he's mine.

Still 5-6 feeds in 24hrs..... always boob 1/2h-ish before food

we have around 4-5 bottles a day but we have food first then bottle about half an hour or so later. She hardly ever drinks the whole 260 ml but if she does want it, its there I guess.
We had a combo tonight - brocolli and sweet potato - yummy! That will be interesting to see at the other end! :cryinglaugh:
but wow Ange - Lu is eating more than C! Am glad I am not over feeding her. Are yuou making your own food? Woolies had a special on only organic food yesterday - 51c each! Woohoo -grabbed that up quick smart I tell you! Havent thought about yoghurt - might buy some tomorrow - do you just use plain yoghurt?
Anyway - all this talk of food is making me hungry - am off to scrounge for something for dinner - my daughter eats better than I do most nights!

Wow Lu certainly does love her food.
M has 4 bottles a day 180-210mls(we are on stage 2), She only started having fruit for breaky yesterday & she has dinner which is usually different veggies mixed together.

Ange if you make your own food how do you mix the steak & veggies?(blend, chop up ?)

Mo- Yup make all her food. With fish, i fork mash it, but chicken and steak i have an attachment that goes on a stick blender that is like a mini food processor, i just give it a couple of bursts to chop it up a bit. It would be the same as finely chopping i guess, but alot quicker.
Most fruit and veg, i cut some into sticks and she has finger food, and some i fork mash in with the meat to make a chunky paste IYKWIM. sometimes i add rice ceral and water if the flavours are too strong just to bland it out a bit. ( Is that even english??? bland it out?!)

Yoghurt-Rebecca i just give her a plain full fat one. Either Jalna or a Gippsland organic one.

Thanks Ange will have to try M on some meat & fish soon, maybe this week since she has a tooth now.
Must try M on some yoghurt as i'm sure she'll love it.

Lu hangs out for her yoghurt. I finely chop a prune and add that to the yoghurt every second day just to keep things movin'! ;)

Chels is still only having 1 meal a day. Dinner at night. I tried her on Breakfast too but she just didnt seem hungry that early in the monrnig. I'll leave her a bit longer. She has 5 bottles a day too.

Rebecca - Yeah I put Chels up to the 2nd formula last week. It seems it is a bit more filling because she doesnt seem to want as much, or as fast.

Ange - How old is Lu again?

I have just made a big batch of food for CHels too. Still mainly sticking to the vegies here - carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato, beans, zucchini etc etc. I think I made enough to keep her going for about 2 months. LOL. And then I did a heap of fruit too! Dunno why I didnt make all my food with Liam. It is so much cheaper!!!
We have needles here Wednesday too. Does anyone know, if your bub is sick (just a cold) will they still do needles? Or do they need to be in perfect health?

Pretty sure they wont jab unless all healthy.

Lu is the old tart around here, i think her and Myles are a day apart....... my memory isn't that flash! She was born the 28/9, so nearly 7 months. I was going to say before......4 weeks is a big difference when it comes to babies.

What the babes were doing a month ago is completely different to what they do now! Especially when they are so young!

Maddi was born on the 25/9 Then Lu 28/9 Myles was born on the 1/10.
I most of the Oct 1st-15th mums have stopped posting, so there seems to be a gap of 2 weeks+

M was so unsettled last night she crashed at 7pm then woke at 9pm, 12am, 3am, 6am.

Sounds like lots of bubs are loving there food, but Lu wins hands down LOL! Ange you are such an amazing mum and Lu sounds like she is an amazing baby! Glad to hear the crusty eye is a getting better!

Hope the needles go well today Rebecca, it's horrible getting them done isn't it? I have to get K's done very soon :(

Becky - I hope Chelsea's gets better soon. There is nothing worse then listening to a baby struggle to breathe.

Viv - How's J's snuffle going? K has finally come down with the cold that Joel and I have had for a couple of weeks :(

Saffi - How did L go last night? Have you tried giving him Demazin or something like that? I gave some to K last time he had a cold and it helped him sleep better at night.

Well, I'm a bit over things atm. K is unhappy most of the time and by the evenings he just cries and cries and I have to carry him everywhere. Yes it could be teething/his cold, but it has been ongoing for nearly 2 months and just seems to get worse. DH thinks I pick him up too much and that is why he is so clingy, but I just can't leave him lying on the floor screaming (literally) and arching his back. Does this make me a bad mum? I have taken him everywhere to get checked over and apart from his ear there doesn't seem much else wrong with him. After his late afternoon nap he rubs his right ear constantly and the cheek on the same side is always bright red. I would still guess teething, but the MCHN couldn't see anything about to erupt. I don't know!!! He used to be such a happy baby and I miss that so much :(.

Sorry for the whinge girls, I'm just going through a low patch right now.

M was rubbing/tugging her ear for 6 weeks before her tooth showed up, Her gum didn't even look swollen before it appeared.

Becky - there will definitely be no TTC for us for quite some time!:p

Mo - congrats on Maddi's tooth:dance:. Thanks for the advice on the solids.

You poor thing Trish, don't really have any advice to offer you, but I'm sure you are doing a great job. I'm with you, if K is crying on the floor then I would pick him up too. Don't feel sorry about whinging to us, thats what we are hear for, to listen and offer advice!:hug:


Another Question about solids.... When do you start increasing the amount and frequency? I have given Tahlia about 2 teaspoons of rice cereal at lunch time. Do I offer more than that at lunch time, or offer more times during the day? Sorry for all the questions!

Kellie sorry forgot to answer that one yesterday, I upped M a couple days after i started because she wanted more.
Tahlia will let you know when she's had enough or wants more, M likes to blow raspberries with a mouth full of food when she's full.
As for when to introduce 2 meals a day just follow Tahlia's lead again, if she seems more grizzly in the morning or at night just offer some cereal or veggies & see how she goes :)

Trish- ya poor bugger, obviously i am not expert but i think trust your instincts. I couldn't leave Lu screaming on the ground. especially if i thought she was unwell. I think that makes you a good mum, not a bad one.
2 months is a long time to be unsettled, must be tough. i found it hard for one week...............wish i could be more helpful.
In the evening do you put him in a carrier? At least your hands are free. Have you tried him in a jolly jumper?
Maybe he'll be happier once he is on the move......
You are doing a great job, at least take comfort in the fact that this can't last forever!

ETA- Mo, Lu sprays me in food too when she's had enough! EIther that or screws her face up and makes a high pitched squeal. I prefer the food spray.

Rebecca - we're still on the Step 1 formula. I thought that Step 2 was for when solids are introduced. Everything I have read recommends full fat yoghurt. Actually diet dairy products aren't recommended until they are over 2 years old. They need the fat (unlike their mummies LOL). Good luck for the jab today. L's is next week. :(
Julia - L is now totally weaned. As I had a low supply it didn't take much for the boobs to shut down completely. Still have a little let down in the shower but not even bothering to express anymore :(
Kim - your ticker has me wondering too.
Trish - I agree, you are far from being a bad mum. Given everything that you have to deal with on a daily basis,its natural to want to pick up a screaming baby not only to offer comfort but to stop the screaming. Don't have any suggestions so hopefully it is teething.:hug:

L's "cold" doesn't seem to be bothering him that much. A couple of coughs overnight but that was it. Haven't bothered with giving him anything.

Been reading a book by the Baby Whisperer. She is very big on routines and I've been thinking that perhaps I haven't been as structured with L as I should be. So last night I did a dreamfeed at 10pm and that lasted him until 3.30am. I then battled with him to resettle him until 4.15am. I gave in and he had a bottle and drank the whole thing (250mls). He then slept until 5.30am when needed resettling and then finally up at 7am. I have just tried to give him a bottle and he only took about 20mls. I am going to try to stick to 4 hourly feeding on the feed, play, sleep cycle but am already mucked up as he isn't hungry because of his 4am feed! I have been giving him a bottle when I put him down for his sleep so think that he now associates food and sleep. But will try to up the amount of food he is having so that he isn't wanting an overnight feed. Oh, used a sleepbag overnight. Still wriggled around the bed, but at least I wasn't concerned he was cold.

Off to get myself some breaky. BBL

Ange i remember those dates because you sent me that funny txt while i was still hospital & Myles because he was born on his due date.

trish - if anything, you need to pick up/carry him more. carried/worn babies are less clingy overall than the poor little mammals who are left to CIO in whatever situation. wear more.... dooo iiiiiit... and to blazes with anyone who thinks it causes clinginess, it doesn't.

my little beastie doesn't have a cold after all, must have just been a one-off snuffle patch. he is also clingy atm. this is the separation anxiety age AND teething-ville, so i expect him to go bats when i walk anywhere without him. i just carry him for as long as i possibly can. it's a cycle, just like everything in life. some parts of the day he's clingy, tired and sad, other parts he's himself.

i read a horrible article about ferber CIO and i actually cried reading this lady's account of making her poor little bub cry. so bad. why are people in such a rush to separate? i bet K will be fine after he's been glued to you for a few days. if that's what he needs, it makes you the best mummy in the world to him for giving him that comfort.

the ear pulling and redness sounds very teethy to me - being with mummy is probably quite a nice proposition to him at the moment.

i always think that the men-folk can be quite off-hand when it comes to all this because they just don't have the motherly compassion. the logic 'problem-solving' thing becomes more important than the big picture.

dh learnt the hard way once when i was out and he let james CIO, except he didn't cry it out at all - he just got worse and worse until he vomited. dh felt soooo bad he has never mentioned the dirty cry method ever again.

i always think about what i would want if i were mostly incapacitated, couldn't speak, couldn't feed myself, couldn't warm myself and bits of me, like my gums or ear, hurt - you're damn right i'd want someone to be there with me as much as possible.

there's plenty of time for these little pudgy mammals to be grown up and independent, and they will want it in their own time anyway. mummy is very uncool soon enough - but it sure is nice to be flavour of the first few months at least!!

that's my morning pep talk for the clingers and carriers out there.

eta: feel for the animals who have a number of little babies clinging to their undersides as they negotiate high branches. i'm grateful i don't have 6 grabbing onto my hair as i go about my business. nature wanted us to hang out with our babies until they're ready to go off by themselves - it's the best way to protect them.

Trish I am with you....been dealing with this for a good long while now....I have my little monkey asleep on my chest as I type this....it's now become a skill to do everything with an 8.5kg kid attached to me. It's so hard to know what they want, but whatever you do will be the best for him so hang in there. :)

Max still isn't moving around much. I think I'm going to take him to a physio to get him checked out. I'm not worried about his body bits as such, just want to help him learn. I think a lot of his whinging and whining comes down to the fact he wants something, but can't get to it. Lazy bones! This morning DH tried to get him to roll over and got his arm stuck....he hated it!!

There has been lots of night waking here...last night went to bed at 6:30 (noice) then up at 9, 11:30, 1 till 2....tiring! I think he's still asleep while he's crying though...don't know what his problem is...bit of boob helps though so I'm sticking to it! Today I'm going to give him a bit more food. He's still only keen on pumpkin so don't know what I'll do to spice up his life! Will just try anything!!

that stuck-arm phase means he's really close to getting it.

even though when jj was a biddy thing he didn't like tummy time, i still foisted it upon him every time i put him on his mat - that way he *had* to roll over if he didn't want to be on his tummy anymore. necessity forced his hand. then he hated being on his back, now he will roll onto his tummy no matter how i put him (as he destroys the telstra junk mail.. :hooray:)

Thanks everyone! I have been having a really rough time of it for so long that sometimes it really gets to me. I spend most evenings in tears on the phone to my mum or DH LOL!

Viv - Thanks, you really do write a great speach! I have been carrying him vitually everywhere for ages, but when you've got another child to look after it is sooo exhausting. I just can't leave him to cry and some people close to me make me feel like I really should just leave him so he'll "learn". But I just CAN'T do it!

Ange - I do put him in the Jolly Jumper and he loves it, but by the evening he is so distressed that he doesn't want to be put down and he won't have a bar of any of his toys. He likes being in is Ergo, but only if I'm walking around heaps, he won't let me stand still and cut veggies! I think you're right that he'll be happier once he is mobile.

Julia - Sorry you're going through it too, it's hard work! :hug:

There is definite separation anxiety atm, whenever I leave the room he cries. Joel did the same, but K just seems so much more extreme. I'm really hoping a fang appears and he goes back to being normal! Thanks again everyone, it's so nice to be able to vent and get some supportive comments back.

Afternoon all!
Well needles went really well this morning. Although we were there for close to 2 hours! Poor little C - was trying to hold off on a feed for directly after the jabs. anyway - there was a nurse-in-training there today and of course I made her hold C while she was getting the jabs - good training! Bad idea though - C was looking directly at me while they jabbed her. of course she cried, held her breath etc and when i grabbed her off this ladies lap (sorry love!) and gave her a cuddle - she forgot all about what was going on and gave the woman a great big smile!!! hat tha?
anyway - my little girl is now 8.16 kg and 66.5 cm long - I think the Dr said she has a 43 cm head but that may be wrong - book is in the car - cant be bothered walking to get it - when I get it out I will update.
I am considering getting her the step 2 formula today and just trying it out - can I give her one of two bottles and then go back to the step 1?? Hmmm might ask wyeth!
Went to the butcher today (one thing about living out here that is really good - meat is FANTASTIC! and pretty cheap too!) and bought some extra steak so will cook/process it over the long weekend :dance:
Anyway - am off to get little miss C from daycare and hope that I can cheer up my boss just a little. I know it doesnt make it any better but she lost her 21 yr old son through a car accident recently so I am hoping see my ltitle bundle of "joy" might brighten her day a little!
