I agree, Sth Yarra is great, on the Yarra and close to the Botannical Gardens as well, but it is very expensive to live there. As nice as St Kilda is I personally wouldn't want to live there with a child. There are loads of hookers and junkies that hang around. We were looking at properties around there a few years ago and they were on the street corners even at 9am! Elwood still has a few junkies, but is probably safer and also really nice.
Trish! I think you are being a bit harsh on Elwood and StKilda! Yup there is one street where the pro's hangout, but StKilda is a big suburb. Albert park is just as close to where the pro's hang out as some parts of StKilda!
Lots of people must think it's great, that's why it's expensive. I often meet friends for dinner or brunch and a walk along the esplanade, and i have never felt unsafe.
Just thought i'd better stick up for StKilda! ;)
Hee hee Ange, didn't mean to sound harsh, just thought I'd say what I've seen! I love St Kilda too, such a fun atmosphere and some great cafes. I just personally wouldn't want to live there after what we saw, and it wasn't just the one street, we were really surprised where they were hanging out! We were looking at buying an investment property there and were driving the streets there a lot. Sorry, didn't mean to have a dig and I don't ever feel unsafe when we visit either. It's actually more affordable for buying than Albert Park is and you are right, it is a big suburb so I'm sure there are some nice areas away from the dodgy people. Hope I didn't offend anyone! :)

ok.... well... we moved away from our equivalent of st kilda up here. the valley/new farm in bris is all about the lovely juxtaposition of cool young professionals with junkies, hookers, gay party boys and old-school italian immigrants. i loved it there when i was young, single and off getting completely maggot in the valley
what i want now is not quite suburbia (which i have now and am... eh about). i love that esplanade down there - i can see many a bike ride, pram push and one day *gasp* running, happening along there.
i've been stalking other forums who have mentioned fitzroy, collingwood and... um i forget, as the slightly lower key version of sth yarra and st kilda. i love fitzroy gardens... sigh.
mo - i'm ready for the cold, i grew up in nz. took me 14 months to acclimatise to qld heat when i got here almost 10 years ago, so i reckon i can snap back to cold. (am looking for an excuse to 'layer up' again too - oh, and i want to see james in a pea coat or something... teehee.... my human dolly).
i need to be close enough to the city for it not to be painful for when i go back to lawyering, but not so close that i'm trapped in that 'lifestyle' which is really not cool for the bubster.
so... does that help anyone narrow it down?

Viv - Fitzroy and Collingwood are great areas. The Collingwood children's farm would be great when J gets a bit older and it is close to the Eastern Fwy when you want to get out of town and go to places like Mt Dandy or the Yarra Valley. Our best friends live in Nth Fitzroy and love it there. They are close to parks and cafe's and they both used to ride their bikes to work in the CBD along the bike path before they popped out a bub. They are moving in June (closer to us, yay!) and will rent out their gorgeous terrace house that they have just reno-ed, so if you are planning on moving that soon and are interested let me know lol! It's so hard to choose somewhere in Melbourne, there's heaps of great places.
Fitzroy and Collingwood are both nice, pretty close to suburbia. Collingwood has a great children's farm! Houses tend to be small-ish type town houses with not alot of yard. of course there are exceptions.
More family firendly....
Elwood is very middle age trendy. nice area.
What about around Kew or Campberwell? expensive, but nice.
Or even further down the coast, around sandringham, brighton area? about 20 min to city. again expensive, but nice.
Willamston/Newport area is nice over the otherside. You would have to PT it into the city, the westgate bridge is a nightmare at peak hour.
Rental market is pretty rough in melb at the Mo, people cueing to just inspect places. So that might play a part in where you'd rent.....
Ooh, Hawthorn is nice too, we lived there for a year when we first got married. Close to the Yarra, city, cafe's etc. Yep, the rental market is a shocker, there is only 1% vacancy atm so it's really hard to get a place.
Just thought Id pop in and say hello, nothing new to report just some sleepless nights with cranky pants but mostly all is well..

Viv - know what you mean about the Coast. I lived there for 13 years. It has changed so much both in terms of development but also the type of people who live there. I don't go down there anymore (have no reason to, but wouldn't really want to either). Love Melbourne. Would love to move down there.
Tried avocado mixed with some formula. Again not keen. His bib is now a nice shade of green. Starting to think that maybe he isn't ready for solids. The dog enjoyed the leftovers.
Off to the park this afternoon for a MG. The weather is so nice up here....

Happy to say we had a much better night last night, best for ages actually. Bed at 6pm, fed him at 9.30pm before I went to bed then didn't hear a peep outta him till 2.10am - woot! Best stretch for ages. Then he fed at 5.20am then up for the day at 7.30am.
Today has been a mixed bag. Only had two sleeps again, probably only 2.5 hours total. Not self settling at the moment either, needs help to go off to sleep.
His cold seems a bit worse today and I am *almost* convinced i see teeth in his bottom gum, so here's hoping there's a reason for the craziness.
Hope we have a good night again tonight.

Saffi - bummer about the solids. DS is going really well with his. Maybe hang in there for a week, take it slowly and see how he goes. Maybe you just haven't found what he likes yet. You could always try again in a few weeks if you feel he's not ready though. Woot! on the hair too, nothin' like a new 'do. I can't believe how many child care centres you're listed with! We were lucky, there's a brand new one opening right near the train station (I travel to the city for work *sigh*). They've done no advertising apart from a site at the construciton site and when I called yesterday, are already 50% booked. The fees are another story though...

he still needed resettling at 12, 1 and 4. but at least i was sleeping in his room so it was easier. i fed him in bed with me and he stayed there till 4.
why don't i like sydney? been there done that. over it now. have always had a deep yearning for melbourne (without the taxi strike), and for one reason or another, couldn't get there. (i blame law school for a large chunk of that).
dh came home last night and said he was 'serious' about moving there. :hooray: i can't believe it's happening. we're aiming for 6 months (coincides with jj's birthday).

Max is getting better as the days go on, with eating, sleeping and everything. So glad.
Must look on the upside...a friend of a friend's baby died at 38weeks.....so sad. I don't know the girl but am totally devastated for her. I didn't want to put Max down after I was told that. Despite all the carpola we have to deal with, we are lucky to have them. *sniff*
A little girl from Mothers group is allergic to banana! Yesterday was just holding it and hands went red, then ate some and swelled (face and neck) and was all blotchy....I guess solids should be introduced with caution....I was going all gung ho with Maxxy, but now want to ease up a bit.

Just had K's 6 month check and he is exactly 8kg, how bizarre! He is 69cm long and is in the 75th percentile for weight, height and head circ. I'm glad he is doing well! Joel had his 3 1/2 year check up at the same time and the nurse detected a minor heart murmur :(. She got another nurse in to check with her own stethescope and she heard it too. She said it's normal for it not to be noticed until this age because the heart beats slower than it did when he was a bub. I have to take him to a GP to get him checked out, but the nurse didn't sound too concerned because he is a great height and weight and is generally fit, active and happy. I'm not really worried, just surprised.
K is loving food, he is gutsing down pumpkin, sweet potato and apple. Last night I gave him a cup of water on the chiro's suggestion (because K was getting backed up) and he loved that too. This boy is a little piggy I tell you! I am still waiting a few days to introduce new things just in case he has a reaction, but I don't think we'll have many probs.
Mo - I hope Maddi's not coming down with a cold :(. There are lots of colds going around atm. I hate this cold weather!
Viv - Yay for moving to Melbourne! Hopefully we can all arrange to meet up! Now you just have to decide where to live...
Julia - Glad Max is getting better! How sad about that bub, it really does make you appreciate your own child more.
Willow - Glad the other night was better, how'd you go last night? I hope those teeth pop through soon!
Saffi - Don't be discouraged because L didn't like avocado, a lot of babies don't like the taste. Maybe go for potato, or sweet potato?

I also just got home from Tahlias 6 month check.. she is 8.340kgs and 67.5cms, so in the 70th percentile for height and the 85th for weight! So she is going pretty well. She told me to turn her carseat around, but I dont think I will just yet, cause from what I've read, its safer the other way.
All of her teething symptoms seem to have disappeared completely without any teeth coming through! Strange, the nurse said they might have just been moving around.
I like my happy baby being back, especially one that sleeps well and through the night! I'm not looking forward to the next round of teething symptoms!
Viv - are you crazy??? its freezing in melbourne! I love QLDs warm weather!

Up again every 2 hours overnight but held out until 5.30 to give him a feed. Feeling ok today as I managed to get back to sleep fairly quickly once I got back to bed. DH says that he will do some reading once he starts leave to see what can be done to get L to sleep thru. DH loves his sleep more than I do so I reckon he'll be motivated to get a solution.
Made up some sweet potato puree. Yet to try it out on L but will do when he wakes up. A little bit goes a long way, even managed to get some for the freezer.
Trish - sorry to hear about J's heart murmur.
Julia - how awful about that girl losing her bub. The sister of a girl I know lost her twins at 32 weeks. I know I breathed a sigh of relief once I got past the 12 week mark and again at 20 weeks but I guess you never can be assured until your bub is in your arms.
Willow - at least your bubs are in somewhere! I reckon if my current career goes belly up I'll become a family day care provider.

Tris - I have a heart murmur too and its no biggy usually, alot of people have them and never know. I had a cardio guy check it out and he said its nothing to worry about just my anatomy.
Amara is getting a bit more into the food, she likes apple, pear and pumpkin. I also tried organic yogurt mixed in with the rice and pear and she loved it :) Definitely have to get those mesh bags as she just wants to grab whatever I have LOL!
My nappy business is on indefinite closure as from midnight tonight, a bit of a relief actually.

Thanks everyone, I'm seriously not worried about it. I'd be concerned if Joel was not gaining weight, lethargic etc., but he is nothing like that! I've read that it is really common and can come and go. I will still get him checked over by a GP to be on the safe side.
Leah - Hope your food poisoning has well and truly gone. How come you're closing down? My business is temporarily closed due to me not being able to do everything! I still run it via the web though.
Saffi - Did you try out the sweet potato tonight? Bummer you have to go back to work next week :(. I hope you still check in here regularly and let us know how you and L are going!
Kellie - Wow, Tahlia is a great size! I'm not turning K around in his car seat yet either, there is a clip on YouTube that shows what happens to a crash test baby in a car accident in both rear and forward positions. It's frightening what can happen when they are facing forward.
Becky - A heart murmur is an abnormal extra sound made when the heart beats. The sound is made by blood moving through the heart and its valves. The MCHN nurse said she could only hear it every 4th beat or so, so it doesn't sound very serious. How are you guys going?

Trish - Oh that is so good. Im so so glad it is nothing serious for you! We are all going well. Both kids are really good - most of the time. lol
Trish - glad you're not worried about Joel. I actually have a heart murmur too, didn't even know till I had my first surgery (between DD and L) and then it was confirmed by my ob and an ECG when I was 12 weeks prg with L. Mine is an 'innocent' murmur, as most are. I think if main valves aren't involved then it's generally not a big deal. I survived till 29 without even knowing I had one! Apparently they are diagnosed a lot during prg due to the increased blood output from the heart, at other times they may not even be heard.
Bad day here today - this little bloke just won't settle off to sleep on his own at the moment. I've had to fight him every sleep. It's wearing me down...I don't know what's gonig on but I really need it to pass NOW! Last two nights have been heaps better though with 3.5-4.5 streches between feeds and no other waking or resettling. I hope tonight's a good night, I really need some sleep after today!

Well guess who likes sweet potato??? Tried some last night and while still did a little bit of a gag he seemed to like it. Tried some more this morning and again seemed to like it. Whats even better is that one of the dogs likes it too and wolfed down the left overs. Bonus!
What is also interesting is that he slept through until 4am. DH did a dreamfeed at 10.30ish. I had gone to bed at 9.30 so at least got a decent amount of sleep. Actually I was semi asleep at some point wondering why L wasn't fussing.
Do you think it would be ok to feed him some more tonight?

Ange - Have a great time in the Grampians! The food and wine festival sounds awesome. We stayed there pre-babies and went winery hopping and hiking. It was so nice.
I am feeling SHOCKING today, I have really bad sinus, blocked then running nose, headache, etc. K had a good night though, down at 8pm, fed at 6am then slept until 8am, nice! He did 2 x 2 hour naps yesterday, absolutely unheard of usually, not sure what was going on! Hope he keeps it up today.

Viv - I know how you feel, our last 3 nights have been OK, doing blocks of 3.5-4.5 hours but days are shocking!! I just cannot get him to sleep most of the time. Takes aaages to settle him, he hasn't self settled in about 4 days now. It's doing my head in but I don't really know what else I can do. If this keeps up, we're going back to sleep school!

Not much happening here! We are off to the coast for the weekend for a mini break! Cant wait! Dh is organising me a massage and spa treatment(if he doesn't forget) and we are heading to the Sheraton for brekky mmmmm buffet!

Willow - I think my MCHN said about 3 - 4 week before they would eat 3 meals a day. Amara has been eating since 10/4 and she is still only having 2 solids a day.
My question for those eating - Did your bub suddenly start scoffing food? A has been vert tentative and then tonight she scoffed about 1.5 tsp of rice cereal, apple and yogurt which made up about 4 Tbsp or so. She has never even eaten anywhere near that before.
I finally got her weighed today. 7.97kg, 69.5cm long. She almost weighs as much as Eliza did at 12 months.
Oh BIG news - we have a word!!!! Mum!!! WOOT!!!!! So now she says it all the time LOL, mum mum, mum mum or muma. Too cute!! At first I thought it was just a sound but she knows, and she looks at me when she says it ahhhhh......she is precious.
Eliza said her first word at 5.5 months so it seems I have early talkers. Imagine what this place will be ;like when they are 12 and 15 eeeekkkk!!!!

Leah - Wow at Amara saying Mum! Kieran says it, but I don't think it's deliberate, I think it is just a noise he makes because he has been saying it for a long time. Girls always learn to talk quickly!

Willow - How did L go last night? Hope he naps better for you today! I waited a week or so to increase K's meals. We went up to 3 meals a day, but we have gone back to 2 meals because he was getting too backed up. He seems happy with breakfast and dinner.

Lizzy - I just increased Ethan's feeds as he showed that he wanted more. When he was scoffing heaps and was still hungry I introduced another meal. He has been on 3 meals for about 3 weeks now and is scoffing about 4 tbsp at each feed. I think he will take more but I don't think he needs it.
Leah - how exciting about Amara's first word. Ethan is still babbling but he does say mamamama (much to dh's disgust) and hewow. I am not suprised as people are always saying hello to him. It is still babbling but it is so cute.
Well we are back to loving solids again. I figured it out. He loves anything jarred or tinned. I have started sneaking in some of my own cooking and will increase it until he stops eating jarred food. It is so expensive but at least he is eating. scoffed 4 tbsp of porridge this morning and then drank his bottle. What a mr piggy. Had our 6 mth check at the clinic this week and we are doing great. Ethan is 8.4kg undressed and 70cm long. We are now moving into 0 clothes. He is just getting too big. Sleeping well in the day but is a bit hit and miss at night. Slept through from 7pm to 6 am this morning with a dream feed at 10pm. Thank goodness as I needed some missed sleep.
