Hi all!

Nicnac - we also have the grunting going after night feeds. I too give a bit of attention, but if its producing no burps and she seems happy I just try to switch off and sleep.

4cheekyboys - 6.6kg!!! Wow!!!

Things are going well here. Miss I is now 3.1kg (nothing compared to James lol), so she's getting closer to doubling her birthweight of 1.84kg. She's sleeping well. She will generally sleep in 1.5-2 hour intervals during the day (something DD1 NEVER did) and is going 5-7 hours at a time at night. I hope it continues for as long as possible!

Wow babies sleeping through the night and doubling their weight that's amazing. I'm sorry I haven't been around things have been chaotic still. Poor little Katie and the whole family had a nasty cold a couple of weeks ago which has lingered on but her weight gain for the last month has been good at 1.2kg then last Friday she got gastro which is still going (gross :P) but she hasn't lost weight just stayed at 4.2kg. We haven't been able to do needles with all the bugs and seeing her paediatrician next week for review. She is finally holding her head more but no smiles yet except when she is asleep which I'm hanging for. We wake every 3-4 hours for feeding day and night but settling can take a while as she has terrible cramping/wind and being sick so often has not helped.
I don't live far from you Amy_Jellybean seems crazy we talk on here lol

HahahA where abouts are you bee? Still a spin out we were in the same hospital at the same time!!!

Quinn is now 5.5kgs and has his needles tomorrow which I'm not looking forward to! Thank hid the weather here has cooled down a little! Bub has been sleeping like a champ but my sleep had been terrible. I struggle to get to sleep and then when I do I have shocking nightmares :(

Amy I struggle with sleeping between feeds too, it is very frustrating hwne your baby i asleep and you know they are going to wake soon but you can't sleep!!! I have a lot of dreams but not nightmares, sorry you are having that.

I hope needles go ok, we had them last week and DD was fine.

Bee - that means we live close aswell ;) I agree it seems strange. Crazier that you and Amy were in hosiptal together. Hope your DD and the rest of the family are feeling better soon.

Amy - I hope the needles go well. Maybe he will have a good day sleep and you can catch a nap. Nightmares suck. Do you usually have trouble sleeping and nightmares?

NicNac - I think sometimes you have to do what ever works and if feeding to sleep gets you a break during the day, well your his mummy.

Afm - we survived everyone being away. DS has been a dream. 3-4 hour sleeps during the night (much better than hourly!) and napping really well during the day. I suspect that he was having a growth spurt because at the six week check up with the mchn he weighed 5.4kgs! Thats 2.2kg increase since birth. He is a little budda even with all the spewing from his reflux. Everyone has gone from saying how tiny he is to 'wow look how big he is'. DH gets a shock every time he comes home at how big he has gotten and he is only away for a week. Loving the smiles and personality that seems to be developing. I think I may have a cheeky boy on my hands.

Needles officially suck :( I cried more than him! He just gave me this look of absolute horror and it broke my heart :(

Keta - No I dont normally have nightmares but I think I have been getting hot in my sleep. Bub hasnt slept well the last few nights so that could be part of it as well :/

For those struggling to sleep/nightmares I've been there and know how annoying/tiring it is. I can recommend Rescue Remedy Night drops, you just drop a couple under your tongue when you go to bed after each wake and it helps a lot. Also keep any light to a minimum, no screens, phones, tv etc. They just wake you up. I pick up DS with a dimmed night light on (all night) sit in the chair, feed with my eyes closed, gently burp him and lie him down and if I need to settle him with shushing or patting I try to do it lying down with my eyes shut and keep in a dream state myself. Of course it doesn't always work if I have to change him or if he is really unsettled but I find it a lot worse. I also try to daydream rather than plan, do mental lists etc. I had it shocking with DD and have really tried to relax more this time around.

Keta, I'm so glad DS did well, I think you were worried how you would cope? Sounds like he is a trooper.
Bee, I hope resettling improves with time. Do you have a comfy chair you can sit in while keeping him upright on your shoulder so you can rest and get dozy together?
Amy, sorry about those damn needles, I hope all settles down soon.
Chody, that's great you have almost had a doubling of weight. How is DD1 coping with all the changes?

Nic Nac your post sounded so familiar! I too had a mild PND with DD and swore I'd be more relaxed this time around esp re sleep. Ash is a great weight too! We have bruiser bubs. DS just weighed in at 7.3kg at 9 weeks and was born at 4kg. Its slightly disconcerting how quickly he is getting big and almost into Size 0. Re self settling I wouldn't worry too much and just help Ash find sleep until he is at least 12 weeks. Have you got the Safe Sleep Space book or DVD? Its really excellent IMO.
Hello everyone else I've missed.

We are getting into a rhythm here day and night and my mum suggested putting DS in a cot as his bassinet is already too small and he seems to love it and is settling in it now for all his sleeps. He has started cap napping 40mins but I'm just going with the flow and know he will eventually work out how to sleep longer in the day. He loves the car though and just sleeps and sleeps while it is moving so our 2 day trip south was a breeze. We are about to head north over 2 days so I hope it continues.
DD who is 2.5 is being quite demanding of us and much harder work than the bub - I hope she settles down soon!

Yeah I've come to the conclusion that I can't sit up watching tv while bf, so last night we experimented with me feeding in bed after DH dimmed my night light- he sleeps through anything anyway. Helps that DD only fed at 2am and 5.30am, and seemed to go ok, I defnately got to sleep easier. When am I going to watch all my shows though lol!! I've got her wearing a night nappy so I don't have to change her at the early morning feed, so fingers crossed.

Thanks for the tips Dusty- gee your baby is big! My DD was 4kg at birth and would only be 5ish kg I think at 8 weeks!

Keta- we're doing 3-4hrly feeds overnight too, its great when you wake up and realise its been 3 hours of sleep! Glad the reflux hasn't stopped the weight gain.

Sounds like you are doing brilliantly Saffy. I love feeding in bed and dozing off. Lol at tv shows, I hardly watch anything anymore except for play school and Peppa pig!

sorry its been a while since posting. Indiana is not much of a day sleeper, i thought i had it under control for a few days but she is back to 20 cat naps during the day. She is now weighing 3.9kg so she is slowly putting on the weight.

I'm loving this stage with so many smiles and attempts at 'chatting'. I can really see a personality developing which I love. Yesterday was a shocker on the reflux front with a baby who was just crying, hungry but not wanting to feed and us both covered in spew. Better today though so can't complain. Sleeping has improved and we even got seven hours straight last week.

Little update here. DD2 is now a 'whopping' 3.85kg. So still the size of a newborn, but 2kg heavier than when born. We generally get 6ish hour stretches at night. Last night she slept through for the first time - from 10:30-6:15! I was very surprised! She's generally a happy little thing :)

Finally saw the paediatrician this week after waiting for 6 weeks and she thinks she has silent reflux, colic, motion sickness and an immature oesophagus so she cries a lot. Though she has started to smile the last couple of weeks and coo as well which is lovely. We sometimes get a 5 hour stint at night but generally she feeds 4 hourly. The doctor has given us a few things to try and help her pain but we try to limit activities outside the home as she hates the car and lots of people cant tolerate her incessant crying at times. All things said though I forget about everything when she smiles at me and I'm sure things will get better im just blessed to have two beautiful babies. Take care and for those in WA enjoy school holidays xx

Oh Bee, I love your positive attitude, especially when things sound like they've a little hard for you and Katie. I hope that you are able to make her as comfortable as possible and she keeps on giving you those smiles- they sure do make everything pale in comparison don't they?
And you know what? She's a baby and babies cry so boo to those people who can't stand her incessant crying!

I'm not much of a poster but thought I'd also pop in for an update.

Our little fella is 13 weeks today. He's 6.6kg and 66cm long. He's doing so beautifully. He's smiling, coo'ing and chatting away a lot. We even had our first belly laughter the other day.

Hes also started drooling and munching on his fists or anything near his mouth.

Not wanting to brag but he's been sleeping from 9ish till 7ish for about a month now and is still fully breastfed.

As for me, I'm not doing too good. My depression is quite bad at the moment and although I'm not medicated, I'm struggling quite a bit. In saying that, I'm still able to feel that I'll be ok soon enough.

I also still have retained placenta which my local hospital is refusing to do anything about. I've been seeing a Homeopath and she has given me some erbs and tinctures to take which did bring on some bleeding but sadly no passing of any tissue products.

So overall we're ok :)

hi everyone else

we are doing well, DH is away visiting his sick dad in the uk for 2 weeks, so I am on my own :doh: luckily we had a wonder week last week and it s all sunshine and roses this week, cos I'm not sure how i would have coped if he had been gone during that wonder week- it was a doozy! My little miss is a lovely happy baby, she loves socailising, and spends the whole of mothers group staring and 'talking' to all the other mums and babies, while their babies sleep in their arms! She's so tired when we leave she falls asleep stright away, but Ithink she is like me and doesn't want to sleep in case she misses out on anything! I htink she is 6.2kg now and quite long.
Still fully breastfeeding and we do about 3 feeds a night, which is fine as I can cope, I just go to bed early! She went through a phase of getting up at 6am which was a killer but she is back to sleeping in til 7.30 again, phew, I'm not good before 7am. I don't htink DD has ever slept longer than 4 hours! Funny how they are all so different.
Anyway, i love being a mum and can't wait for mothers day this year! I told DH all I want is a back massage cos BFing is a hard work on my shoulders.

Hi all, how are you all going now that we are through the first three months?
Can't believe Ash is 16 weeks today- where has the time gone?? He is doing really well and seems to be progressing so fast... Lots of toy grabbing, rolling from front to back ( think his motivation there is to avoid tummy time!!) and beautiful smiles.
No sign of sleeping through - in fact woke every hour last night but he has some sort of tummy upset at the moment so to be expected. Normally three hour wake ups and if we are lucky he will do a longer stretch in there of around five hours.
Chody can you get your DD to have a chat to Ash?! Lol
Hope you are all well and would love to hear more about your babies and how you are all going.

Ilithya I hope you are feeling better. I had PND with DD and found ADs helped a lot. I had one that was compatible with breastfeeding.
Saffy I hope you survived DH being away. How did it go? I love that your DD wants to be part of the action.
Nicnac great to hear how you are going. Has sleep improved? We've also have had 4 month sleep regression but I remember with DD things improved once she began to move/crawl and tire herself out more.

Another one that can't get over time flying. Felix is 19 weeks today. So happy and content and loves his big sister so much and she him. He is still growing heaps. 8.7kg and filling size 0 and he outgrew the capsule I had. I had to buy a whole heap of winter clothes for him as we flew through 00. He is off to see the surgeon re his umbilical hernia but it really has resolved itself already so I don't think they will do anything. Sleep is not too bad (2-3 hour intervals) though I find from 2 or 3am onwards he is very wakeful and needs help resettling quite often. I weaned him of the swaddle then dummy at around 12 weeks but have reintroduced the dummy to give my nipples a break and he seems happier. He is a cat napper and i am just going with it so he has 4-5 naps a day of 45 mins. No rolling unless his sister does it for him, but is grabbing objects and loves to chew my hands, fingers, anything he can.

Dusty, every time I read your posts about Felix I get goosebumps. Our bubs are so similar you could be writing about Ash. Today we are off to the surgeon so he can look at Ash's umbilical hernia! Hope your consult goes well and no intervention is required.

Hi Dusty, Ash has an umbilical hernia and above it, a supra umbilical hernia. They are both fairly small (??? Around 8-9mm each). The specialist says there is a 90% chance that the umbilical hernia will resolve itself by the time he is 1, but the supra umbilical hernia will never resolve itself. However, the doc says there is such a small chance of anything happening medically with the supra hernia that we have the choice of doing nothing or getting them both fixed surgically at the same time (they wont just fix one because that would put additional pressure on the remaining hernia).
We have opted for the do nothing approach. The surgeon wouldn't operate anyway till DS is six months. He also says that a lot of people think about getting them fixed (mainly for cosmetic reasons) when the child is around four. This is apparently when kids have pretty much lost their baby fat and the hernias are more obvious from then. The doc also said that the parents generally want to get it done at around that age for convenience as often one of them is not back in full time work yet and has the time to deal with a hospital stay.
We live near the beach too so the doctor also said that if Ash learns to surf, he might want them fixed because laying down on the board can irritate them (very funny thinking about that now) Guess we'll cross that bridge if and when.....
And finally he also said that if Ash ever needed his appendix out or similar, get the surgeon to repair the hernias during the same operation.
That'll be $170 thanks for that 15 minute consult lol
Speaking of baby fat, Ash had his four month shots yesterday (he is 18 weeks I think now??)- he weighs 9.5 kgs and 71cm long. Needless to say, my back is killing me.
Dusty, does your DS have just the umbilical hernia? The prognosis for those sounds pretty good.

we are in the middle of the 4 month sleep regression too, mostly day naps, nights are pretty consistent at 2-4hrly feeds, which I can manage. Dusty, my DD wakes more after about 2am too, I think i read in Babylove that it is common. So daytime is a bit of a shocker currently, she really fights any sleeps and I usually end up driving round to get her to have a nap ( thank god she sleeps in the car) and then walking with the pram for the next nap, although sometimes she can go a whole afternoon with just 10mins sleep! Shes a pretty happy little thing so its not too hard to cope with her!!!

I'm presently in a dilemma about getting her out of a swaddlebag, she is also still in a bassinett in our room which I need to deal with as she is almost too big for it. DH is keen to get her into her nursery of course and naturally I am not. Not sure what to tackle first, I tried removing an arm from the love to dream 50/50 swaddle last night but she woke quite a bit and I ended up cosleeping for most of the night to get some sleep.I wonder if its worth waiting for the 'sleep regression' period to pass. Might post a thread about it actually.

Your babies are large! mine is 18weeks tomorrow and only 6.2kg, glad I dont' have to lug around such heavy poppets. Good luck with the hernias too, girls.

I had an extended period of being a single mum as DH's dad passed away while he was over in the UK unfortunately so he stayed for an extra week, it wasn't ideal but we survived, DD is pretty easy but I was glad when DH returned to pass her over to him! He missed her so much.

Wow 9.5kg! I thought mine was hard to lug around. Way to go Ash and mumma :) Thanks for the info NN, sounds like its a watch and wait which my Paed friend said is what they do in most cases. Interesting about the cosmetic perspective, I hadn't thought about that. Felix definitely has one, it protruded about 2 cm out earlier on and I could see it pulsating with stuff, but is now much reduced but I can feel the lesion inside. Hope Ash has responded ok to the shots.
Saffy, I'm sorry to hear about DH's dad. I'm glad DD is fairly easy, but it also sounds like you are very capable too. Re the swaddlebag, I weaned DD off them during day sleeps and it became obvious she could do without them at night. Her sleep was always bad though, so I didn't really notice a difference, but her extreme startle had disappeared by about 4.5 months which was the main reason we used one. With Felix I just unswaddled him cold turkey and it was fine. A few days latter I went cold turkey on the dummy (at 12 weeks) but I reintroduced it a couple of weeks ago as he was chewing my nipples off overnight!
We are away visiting my family and sleep routines have flown out the window and I'm too tired to do anything about it. He woke at 4am this morning and only had a couple of naps until just now. Was up most of the night trying to get him to sleep. He just loves to lie in his cot and 'chat' during the night. He isn't a screamer at all like DD was, so I just listen to him and try to nap or bring him into bed and encourage him to sleep on my boob. Once he hits 6 months and is eating a few solids I am going to try the babybliss technique (patting) and night wean him a little if I can summon up the energy by then. He is definitely getting enough milk during the day and night to try it.

How's everyone doing? Very quiet in here. We're entering the next wonder week and Felix is 6 months in 2 weeks. Loving having a baby again but it's going too fast!

we are going well here, 5 months old now. Nights pretty good, still wakes but its 2-4hrly which I can manage- even managed to get DD out of swaddlebag and also into her own room/cot with minimum of fuss. I had been putting it off for ages but couldn't argue with the fact she was too big or her bassinet.

Days are a bit of a struggle still, only napping on top of me. I am able to get her to sleep pretty easily if I catch her at the right time, but have tried putting her in the cot when she is in a deep sleep and it doesn't work, then when she wakes it is a nightmare to get her back to sleep so I don't try it very often. I just usually sit and read ( luckily I love reading) or watch tv if I can get her asleep in the lounge room. She really is a bit of a live wire and would stay awake all day if I didn't force her to go to sleep. I vary between loving the cuddles and enforced rest to resenting the fact I can't get anything done, but I know it won't be forever.

Had a few issues with her weight too, so getting weighed on Thursday, will probably end up starting solids as I can't keep arguing about the fact that she isn't growing much! Shes been in the same clothes for ages though so I got my money worth there lol.

I don't know how you girls have more than one baby, my DD is fairly easy and really happy but the thought of doing it again, I'm not sure I could with a toddler. Luckily I am too old and doubt we would get UTD again ( have one frosty left but my track record isn't good so I doubt it would work, i think DH wants to use it eventually which is fair). Anyway we are just loving our life with our baby, she really is the apple of our eye and has made us so happy.

My sisters baby just went through that wonder week Dusty and she said it was fairly easy and he could sit up at the end of it, so thats something to look forward too!

how is everyone going? These six months have gone so quickly. From the looks of the forum, it seems that some of us are having similar sleeping problems caused by goodness knows what! I'm thinking teething, wonder week, huge developmental leaps, lots of rolling, starting solids (think I've got most of my excuses covered there!!). Anyway, I'm still getting decent sleep and feel fine during the day thanks to DH letting me have little sleep ins in the mornings.
Ash is doing really well- he is such a smiler, and goes into fits of giggles when his sister entertains him. It's really beautiful to watch. His latest trick is to shake his head from side to side, which everyone laughs at, so he keeps doing it. It's too cute.
He has taken to solids really well so far. We are doing baby led solids because I've decided I'm too lazy to puree. There's been no real difference in his vomiting, he's still a happy chucker..... probably because his food intake is still so minimal. But I am amazed at how he can feed himself, and his gagging isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be either.
I hope all of the January babies are doing well and those in the colder climates are keeping warm. I really like being at home with the little ones in winter as I get to enjoy those clear, sunny days outside instead of being stuck in an office. It makes all the difference to weathering winter I think.

hey nicnac- thanks for replying to my other post re sleep- good to know i am not the only one ( didn't really want to hear that it is still occurring in 10 month olds tho :doh:)
I use all those things as my excuses too!! My DD loves solids too, to the point where I htink she is BFing less during the day which is frustrating, she is only having breakkie and dinner at this stage, I did pureeing but once he turns 6 months I will do some BLW too. Shes pretty good with her hands so I think she will enjoy it! I was a bit paranoid about gagging too, but good to hear you haven't had a problem :)
