Lol I might have to take you up on that!
Without sounding thick.....can someone please tell me what BLS is?
Kezzabird- BLS is baby led solids. I haven't read too much about it yet but basically I think it's giving them solids as finger food, so letting them feed themselves and choose what they want to eat.
I thought it meant baby lead solids but got confused when you said about doing a mixture of veggies and BLS, I didn't realize that it meant finger foods. I must be an old timer as I haven't heard of this BLS and letting baby choose.;)
Just a quick one from me, my last pump for the night before bed ....
Storm, Arlea is kind of mobile - she wriggles & squirms her way around, she got stuck between 2 bits of furniture this morning, lol. She is still getting up on all fours but doesn't go anywhere that way yet, and there is a fair bit of face-planting into the floor going on too!
Solids - it must be very very hard to deal with the 'my mum did this' bit. I guess you could remind your DP that times & advice changes... I don't know, I know it must be very hard to deal with. I started all my kids right on 4 mths, that was the advice back then, now with Arlea we are waiting a bit longer & I feel like it's taking forever! My nephew is a week younger than Arlea & SIL has started him on solids already. I felt a bit weird when she said that - like she might think I was odd for not having her on them already? I guess it doesn't matter what we do, there is always someone doing different...
Sarah, rofl - you could come & sort out my DH afterwards - I left the kids with him tonight while I went to work Christmas dinner - came home (he is in bed) and the two older kids tell me he was very stressed & swearing a lot, but wouldn't let anyone help him
Corey has a tooth! yay! I hope the next one slips out nice & easy for him ; ) Sounds like he is definitely ready for food. I think the guidelines are rough, it might vary a bit from bub to bub? Some would be ready before others? JMO, but he certainly sounds like he's enjoying it!
Miss E, hope the teething settles down soon, poor little guy (and poor you!)
Glad the Brauers is working for you, it's good to find something that helps even if it's just a bit. Just keep repeating - this too shall pass -
Cate, I have found Tizzie Hall's book at the library but I have some overdue stuff to return first, lol. I am going to try & get it by this Saturday, will definitely let you know what it's like. I have also wondered if Arlea could be teething - nothing to see or feel here either but I have a friend who didn't see or feel anything until they were there - so you never know ;) Gotta love the raspberries lol : D
Naomi, that 's great news about the money - just in time for Christmas! Things have a way of coming when you need them sometimes. Hope you get some help from your DP soon, it's no fun feeling like a single parent when you have them to worry about as well!
AFM I had a bit of a melt-down today... I am so tired & stressed & over it all! DH has 2 weeks off with no pay over Christmas so I have been working as much as I can, at home & in the office - it's starting to wear me down a bit - and the kids are off school now too so there are the usual arguments & dramas to deal with. The house is a mess & I never have enough time to do anything! argh... well like I said I had a melt-down, sat & cried for an hour...maybe two  but I feel better now. Tomorrow is another day :D
Hope veryone else is well.
Gee, so much for my short post
hi all just flying in been staying out with the kids dad who doesnt have a computer. doing ok i personnaly have had some up n down days but im getting there. anton is growing fast n doing well. hopw everyone has a great chrissy n a safe new year
Hey guys!
haven't been on for ages and felt bad but it looks like it has been fairly quiet with Christmas approaching anyway! I have been reading and hope everyone is well!
Sam turned 5 months last week! I can't believe it. We bought a high chair and he has had some rice cereal for 4 days and today had some rice cereal mixed with a bit pf pumpkin. I thought it was ready as he has been so interested in us eating and picking things up. He took to it like he had been doing it for years! Just straight in and was grabbing the spoon and wanting more! he loved it and we got it on film too! He is rolling a bit more now and pushing his legs a little as though he wants to move. He has started putting his feet in his mouth and loves playing with his toes now.
Anyway will try to write before Christmas but hope everyone has a good break!
Just a quick one while Hayley is asleep!
Gave myself an early christmas present and I am now a Platinum BB member! Yay!! Lol
Had a terrible night with Hayley last night...she didn't go to sleep until a bit after 10 and was screaming for an hour or so before...she just eventually crashed out from being so exhausted. I don't know what was wrong with her, maybe just really overtired? My mum and little brother have been here for the last few days, they went back home yesterday morning. was great to see them and I think they both enjoyed spending time with Hayley now that she is a bit more interactive.
everyone excited about Christmas? Our tree has never had so many presents under it, think most of them are for Hayley though!
Jetta- we started solids last week too, just a little bit of rice cereal. I don't know if she is ready for it (although she ticks all the boxes on the 'signs' they are ready) as she has started crying every time I try and give it to her, then won't drink the rest of her bottle, or if she just doesn't like the taste of it? I might try mixing in some mashed pumpkin or something, what is the best vegetable to start them off with? I gave her a little strip of zucchini last night while we were eating dinner to keep her quiet and she happily played with it and ate about half of it (the other half was decorated all over her grobag!). Maybe she just doesn't like to be fed and wants to do it herself? Sometimes she will grab the spoon and put it in her mouth but as soon as she gets the taste of the cereal she screws her face up and pulls it back out. I can understand her not liking it though...I had a taste and it is gross!
Hey Storm - they do say that becuase breast milk is sweet they can prefer sweet things. did you mix some breast milk in with it? If not try that or otherwise you could try a fruit first that is something a bit sweeter.
Sam seems to love anything, I did 4 days of just rice cereal then 2 days of a cube of pumpkin mixed with the rice cereal. Today I just did rice cereal as he seemed to have huge amounts of wind last night, slept fine most of the day but last night was awake til after 7.30pm after going down at 6pm and was crying a lot. He had a lot of wind and I guess it is just getting use to the food, although it is running it is different to liquid. He was gassy today and did 2 HUGE number 3's!!! Seems a bit better tonight and settled okay but I guess the extra fibre from the pumpkin too probably is working through his system.
Hayley is obviously interested in food which is why we started. Today my mother in law didn't have any milk and he cried after a few mouthfuls so maybe just water was something he didn't like?? I am no expert at all but hope something like that might help!!
Thanks Jetta. I might try stewing some apples and mixing a little bit in. I didn't really want to start with fruit because I read somewhere that if they start with sweet things they are less likely to want to eat vegetables. Don't know how true that is? DF bought her some baby vanilla custard, but again I don't really want to start her on something sweet, and the custard says for 6 months +, whereas at least the cereal says from 4 months. She is on formula so I have been using that with the cereal but it doesn't seem to make a difference if I use that or water.
just when we had everything all worked out it changes again!
ss-storm - have you thought about doing finger foods instead? rice cereal seems pretty bland & so i can understand why babies don't want it  we've just offered DS some different things - so far he's had bread (plain & once with a tiny bit of hommous), strawberries, cantaloupe, porridge & loved them all. we offered some vegies tonight (pumpkin, sweet potato & carrot) but he wasn't interested although he did like squishing the pumpkin between his fingers! but yeah, what i meant to say is that they don't actually have to eat just yet, so if you wanted to offer hayley food & all she did was play with it at first, then that's cool. i tried to feed DS the porridge on a spoon but he wanted to do it himself, so i let him - it's been a total spin out so far just how adept they can be at feeding themselves when they're ready. i got a tommee tippe spoon set that had an adults feeding spoon but also a spoon that was for babies to use themselves.
jetta - what a great thing to get on film!
jas - i'm a bit late, but any time! but i hope your poor DH has recovered from the stress ;) a good cry is so therapeutic sometimes, i hope you're feeling better. xmas is great, but stressful too, i reckon.
sloane- with the strawberries did you cook them or anything first or just give them raw? I guess I'm just paranoid about her choking! Might try some apple in her cereal tomorrow and see if that makes a difference, she will grab the spoon and try and put it in her mouth but as soon as the food touches her mouth she backs away. Finger foods might be the go as she did like the zucchini even if she didn't have very much. Might have to make a trip to the fruit & veg store tomorrow. lol
Would help if we had a highchair...need to find one as MIL said she would buy one (give us the money) for her for christmas.
nah, just gave them raw. apparently because they're acidic, that they can give some babies a rash but DS was fine. i don't think they do much more than suck on foods initially so if they do eat anything it's very mushy, if that makes sense? these strawberries were quite ripe so they must have mushed up easily in his mouth. he did end up with strawberry juice all over him & so did DP! check out the BLS chatter thread - there's heaps of good info if you are interested :)
Thanks :D
I have some in the fridge so might give her one while I'm trying to have brekky tomorrow. i'm sure she'll enjoy getting strawberry juice all over her even if she doesn't eat anything! I was a bit concerned about giving her "real" food rather than just a couple of bland foods to start off with as she isn't 6 months yet, but she certainly seems more interested in eating it herself rather than me feeding her.
Storm!!!
I read your first post earlier tonight & thought ooh, can't wait to see your avvy... and look here it is already it's gorgeous!! :D
So, a few babies on solids now. Arlea had a cruskit yesterday, she was watching DS eat chips & killing herself trying to get to them, lol - no good giving her chips so I gave her a cruskit & she loved it!
I was planning on waiting a bit longer before really starting her on solids.. we will see. She seems to have made a bit of a jump WRT her interest in food inthe last few days so I will watch her a bit more closely now.
Thanks Sarah  I am feeling better, sometimes it's good to just let it all out  still a bit full-on & stressed but coping ok ;)
How is everyone doing in these last few days before Christmas?
We are flat out here, cleanign & shopping to do etc...
Arlea has another cold  didn't get much sleep last night, fingers crossed tonight will be better.
:grouphug:
thanks Jasp! I was so surprised at how quickly it was done, wasn't expecting to get it until at least after the new year!
Hope Arlea gets over her cold quickly (and doesn't pass it around!) i'm sure that's the last thing you want for christmas!
I wanted to wait too before starting Hayley on solids, but I think she is ready for them...she had half a strawberry this morning and with her "morning tea" bottle she had some rice cereal with a bit of stewed apple mixed in. I think she much preferred the cereal with apple, no screaming/crying while I was trying to feed her. Although she does resist if I try and put the spoon in her mouth so it's easier if I wait until she grabs the spoon and tries to put it in herself, or wait until her mouth is open then shove some in. but much easier than just plain rice cereal, I don't blame her for not liking it really!
Put some piccies on FB of her first food experiences...gosh the faces they pull are so funny!
It seems like forever since I last posted, I haven't a hope of managing personals! Although, storm I love your avatar!
WRT solids, I started Zac on rice cereal about 4-6 weeks ago. I have pretty much stuck with that so far although I have tried introducing some sweet potato. I find getting the timing right really difficult - either it's too close to his next bottle, or he's tired, or we're out... Anyhow, he seems very happy with the rice cereal, and opens his mouth like a baby bird every time the spoon comes near him :-) I've heard that babies have heaps more taste buds than adults, so foods that taste quite bland to us are completely different for them. Apart from the fact they've not much to compare with! Our MCHN calls it an 'educational diet' - ie educating them about tastes and textures, and not to expect much of it to actually make it into their stomachs. I have also heard about not introducing sweet stuff too early (like fruit) so that they don't just get a taste for sweet and turn their noses up at vege. I am very interested in the BLS that some of you are doing. I might try giving Zac some pieces of food to play with. So far the only 'chunky' thing he has had is a rusk, which mainly just got slobbered on and used as a weapon on anything within reach :-)
Zac's sleeps are all over the place again ... I have gotten into the habit of going to bed with him for his first day sleep. Dunno whether it's a bad habit or not, but we both get a nap, and I'm too tired to worry too much about it!
So, another epic from me  Hope everyone is well and surviving the lead up to Christmas. I bet everyone's Christmas trees are surrounded by heaps of presents for the babies! Ours is just about submerged
Merry Christmas everyone. Give all your bubbas a big kiss from me:)
Thanks Cate :)
Have been having some major sleeping troubles here...I don't know if it is because she is starting to teethe or not? I can feel a couple of bumps on her bottom gum but nothing sharp so they aren't there yet. Last night it took us 2 hours to get her to go to sleep..she finally went off to sleep just before 10.30 after some bonjela and a dose of panadol and lots of crying/screaming :(
I thought tonight was going to be the same but thankfully she went to sleep after about half an hour. This morning she wouldn't go to sleep either, she was up for over 3 hours before she finally conked out...even went for a walk up to the shops with her in the pram and she was still awake by the time we got home. And she still only slept for 40 mins! :wall:
I wish she would just sleep sometimes! The worst thing is she is so close to going to sleep, but at the last minute rubs her eyes or pulls her hair or accidentally knocks her dummy out and she is wide awake again.
Hopefully it is just a phase, or to do with her teeth, or maybe solids? Just hope it doesn't last too long...
She had some banana today, think she liked squishing it more than eating it! She was so funny though, chatted all the way through it! I kept finding little bits of banana for the rest of the day. Lol.
Heading to Wagga tomorrow, MIL sent us some money to buy a highchair for Hayley for christmas. Would you believe there is only one highchair in this whole town?!?
Better go, after the last couple of nights I really need an early one! If I don't get a chance later, hope you guys & your families all have a lovely christmas, I know I can't wait (bet my camera can though...it will work like it has never worked before  )
Merry Christmas everyone, I have been reading your updates, but been too busy to do one myself.
SS storm (((hugs)))) I hope Hayley gets better at sleeping for you soon, my two have started to play up at the day time naps too, it must be a phase they go through.
Everyone else hope your ok and have a lovely Christmas!
xxxxxxx:grouphug:
Hey lovely ladies and gorgeous bubbas! Just wanted to pop in and wish you and your families a wonderful Christmas!
