I might be dog tired but im enjoying watching dd learning to smile so cute
I have been meaning to come say hi in here but the days just fly by at the moment.
Jelly, that is exciting that smiles are starting. I sit with DS snuggled into me so often and I know I should put him down so I can sleep too but it is hard. I love the snuggles to much.
We are all going great. DS and I have a great pattern happening. He gets wind pretty bad, all my babies have.
Hi may mumma's!
I'm with you Kazzo the days are just flying by!
DD is doing well, I'm not complaining as it appears she got her dads love of sleeping! We have been lucky to get 5-7hour blocks at night.
Feeding is a different matter! Mainly BM, but having to top up with formula as after 2 hours BF she still is hungry. My supply has been all over the place and working itself out.
Will go to a lactation consult this week to try to work out if we can make feeds shorter and supply more.
Otherwise we almost forget DD is here! She's a very chilled bubs!
Kazzo I wish she would let me put her down its either cuddles or screaming ATM lol little bossy boots she is both mine have been windy although dd more so especially if I have milk or chocolate :(
Mlr lucky thing I only get 5 hrs in middle of day grr why can't she do it at night lol hope your supply sorts out soon must be frustrating
I get 3-4 hours between feeds day time and 5-7 hours over night
We are 3-4 hrs during day and then from 4pm - 10pm its every hr or half hr and then back to 3-4hrs
Grr heard dd cry out to find ds leaning on her rocker trying to poke her with crayons
Just wanted to say a quick hi and announce myself and my little new man (Dane Jonas Alfred).
Born in Stockholm on May 22, at home in water after a fast two hour labour. The first I wasn't sure whether it was the real thing.
Things are understandably busy was comparatively quiet the third time around...
Tanya - Welcome again to you and Dane. How are his siblings going with their new brother? What age are they?
All good here, Miss A now weighs 3.8kg and 50.8cm. And 1 month old today!
I just want to do a happy dance this morning. I took Owen to the chiro on Thursday and he noted that his neck was stiff and his left shoulder was out. The shoulder makes complete sense because he's scream every time he was put in the car. His shoulder was adjusted and we went home. Thursday he was fine, but friday, saturday and sunday night we couldn't put him down. He'd go to sleep but within 10 minutes he'd be grunting and pulling his legs up and he'd wake up. He was also a bit refluxy. So obviously something had changed. I took him back to the chiro yesterday and he checked him out and his neck was still out and because of the shoulder adjustment it was now causing issues. The chiro is such a lovely man and he said if he was unsettled last night to bring him back today for no charge and for the next 2 weeks he'd only charge half price because he'd told me he wouldn't need any more appointments.
So my happy dance is because Owen slept 5 hours last nigh! we'd gone from being lucky to get an hour out of him sleeping in his bounce being rocked to 5 hours. Yes it was 7-12, but he still did it. Then he woke at 3.30 but his bed was freezing so I brought him into bed with me for some cuddles and he slept until 6. I'm so happy with that.
Sorry for my little brag. I'm just so happy that he's a bit more settled again. He's so chilled out but because he wasn't getting any sleep he wasn't so chilled.
Gee maybe I should take Hattie to chiro
Jelly - I love my baby chiro, but I don't think he fixes everything. With DS2 he had regular appointments but he still never slept any better. Thats just the type of baby he was. I think Owen is a much more settled baby compared to DS2. I only took Owen because I know a quick labour can sometimes put their necks out. Plus he was posterior, which is what caused the shoulder. Owen did not have anything noticeable wrong, but I wanted him checked out. If you can find a reputable pead chiro then I don't see anything wrong with getting them checked out. Some people don't agree with what they do, but my chiro will only do an adjustment on my babies after doing it to me first and asking if I was happy for him to do it.
Hi Everyone,
Subbing into this thread... I will be back later to catch up. From what I quickly read sounds like everyone is plodding along pretty well which is good to hear. Our baby is going really well, she is such a little sweetie and this mama is deeply in love all over again!! I have been staying my room feeding her, watching her and sleeping and reading while the world goes on around me. Our community is amazing, feeding us and coming and helping hubby with the house all so this mama can take time to be with her baby!!! She is sleeping really well in between feeds and overnight as well, I have really cut out so much food and eating very plain healthy meals so no wind just yet. I will start adding things back in later next week to see how this affects her.
Anyway better run, going to make myself some breakky before next feed time.
Have a great day!!!
hi all,
little Dane is 6 days old - hard to believe that tomorrow he will be a week - ONE WEEK - old !! time is flying already.
unfortunately the work handover was never completed, so i found myself in a frigging work tele-conference meeting today at 10am. it is partially my own doing (+ also circumstances beyond my control, given that my kids were sick when the previous meeting was scheduled a few weeks ago, so i had to cancel). things are a bit messy and i am trying to sort them out (despite baby brain). stuff i had done back in December that i can no longer find.... blah blah blah.
it's just upsetting that it's hanging over my head. i'm feeling like things could get nasty at any time (from my boss or customer), and i'm trying to keep everyone happy, except myself.
on the family front, things are just wonderful. hubby is home (until august!) and we are having a cosy time. At night we sit up, sleep deprived and chat and chat (which we never had time for before, as we were stressed with work/study). During the day, it's quite often just the two of us and baby, whilst the older two boys (ages 2&4) are at preschool part-time. thank GOD for preschool, it means we get to have a sleep during the day, as bubba loves to party at night. He has been sleeping all day today and i know there is a chance i am going to regret not sleeping more today (instead of working... grrrr).
Hubby has just gone to pick the boys up from preschool and we're now off to the park for a little picnic. bliss!!
have a great week everyone
ps - Dane's umbilical cord fell off today (day 6). woot! now we can have baths with all 3 boys :-))
Wow Tanya your doing well no way I could get my brain to think with a one week old, love when the belly button finally falls off and ds loves having baths with dd
Well back to bed now that dd has finished lol two boobs, two poo explosions, 2 outfits and 3 vomits later totally worth it for the big smiles I got though now she is hiccuping in bed poor thing
Hattie is 1 month old today
Jelly, 1 month already wow.
DS had his nurse check today. Poor little tyke has mastopathy. So far he does not need to go on anti biotics but I have to keep a close eye on it. He has put on 100g from discharge weight so following his sisters in the slow weight gain as I thought.

Hi all,
We are going well. DD has put on more weight but its in the lower end of the scale. DD seems to love sleeping but slow eater and can take up to 3 hrs! Went to lactation nurse yesterday and learnt a few tricks but overall she said we were doing fine.
Anyone else find they get grumpy when BFing?? Or maybe it's a just I have been at home too long, DH is annoying me with his little quirks and he's got a manflu (we don't usually spend this much time together!) and I'm tired, despite DD sleeping 6hrs at night.
I think it's the BFing that is making me tired.
But I will soldier on.
How is everyone else? Are there many mumma's to be in the belly buddies group?
Mlr I think I'm prob just permanently grumpy until the kids are old enough for school lol not from bf though but it does make me nauseous and anxious
Speaking of anxiety it has hit the roof the last 3 days I hope I'm not getting PND again I'm feeling very overwhelmed
Ds is at daycare today so I plan to do nothing but watch tellie and sleep lovely cold rainy weather for it, going to see if I can get a drs app today too I'm a bit nervous you think after 2 kids I'd be used to to people poking around down there lol
Dr thinks endometritis so I'm on antibiotics back next week to monitor and recheck my PND status
Wish this baby would stop screaming I feel nauseous dizzy and my tummy hurts I just want to sleep!!! I need dh to look after her but he won't! I feel like I'm gonna have a breakdown and I can't just put her down and let her cry she will wake up ds
Hugs jelly! Why won't Dh help? Surely he could take her for an hour or two between feeds? Just so you can get some rest?
ATM I'm camped out on the lounge floor with Owen sleeping in his bouncer. He's waking every 2 hours tonight. Ill be telling Dh he needs to get up at 4ishso I can get a few hours sleep even if he had to bring ds to me for a feed...
Massive hugs jelly
Dd finally stopped at 1am and now awake again
Dh tried for 40mins but couldn't handle it cause she won't settle for him even if I settle her she screams when i give her dh
Gosh Jelly is sounds like you are having a rough trot. I replied to the other thread you just started too. Regarding Hattie crying and being unsettled have you eliminated anything from your diet to see if that makes a difference? The main offenders are garlic, onion, leek, broccoli, cauliflower... anything in the brasica family. Also, chocolate, coffee and some babies dairy but I would not do that unless you have done all the others for a week. Most people see a difference within a few days.
Opps baby crying will come back later
I was going to say similar to lbf. also how long do you spend burping DD. All my babies have been very windy babies, DD1 had silent reflux and was a happy chucker. DD2 happy chucker but not as bad. Ds is very windy and a chucker but struggles with it a bit. I spend atleast 20-30min after a feed burping him and it makes all the difference.
good luck jelly - hope little hattie settles down. for the first 3-4 nights little Dane was nursing NON-STOP and i just reached a point when it got too much and i had to hand him over to DH.
question to everyone, especially you second+ timers. have you found that your post-birth uterine contracting hurts more?
for me this time around, it's almost like braxton hicks! now it feels like a dull punch to the stomach!! i'm still quite sensitive if one of the kids climbs on me (something i'm otherwise used to!)
ok, time for me to have a nap as Dane is asleep. you know the drill, "sleep when the baby sleeps, clean when the baby cleans". :shhh:
Tanya: my after pains were like being in labour again! I never had anything the first time
I'm gonna express a bottle for do dh can give to her to so I can rest tonight
When I went to the lactation consultant the other day, and my Grandma (had 8 kids in post war days!) both said nothing you eat effects babies who are breast fed. Due to the time it takes for food to break down and get to the milk, it is minuscule amounts of your food.
Also like when pregnant, if your culture is to eat certain foods, ie indian diet eating spicy foods, then baby has already been exposed whilst inside, so BFing shouldn't effect bubs.
The only exception I have heard is diary, as it can change the body's probiotic balance.
So if baby has wind it can come from many ways, and baby may require lots of burping or leg movements to release the trapped air, which is usually what upsets them.
Sorry Jelly, don't have any other pointers for you!
Back again...
I have to politely disagree MLR
The brassica family, onion and garlic, chocolate and coffee and sometime dairy are known to be found in breastmilk. The reason for this is that they require a strong sulphur process to digest it all so that the flavour does not go into the milk. Unless the mother has an incredibly strong digestion she cannot break these foods down enough for the flavour not to go into the milk. There are several studies about this online. I am quite surprised that a lactation consultant would say such a thing. In my own personal experience, I have worked with many newborns over the past 5 years, and my own babies, taking said foods out of the diet for at least the first 6 weeks improves the unexplained screaming every time. As with any newborn advice a mother has the instinct to know if she should listen or not, but in Jelly's case with an unexplained screaming baby at this stage anything would be worth a shot to see if it can help her and her baby.
The curry thing is a bit of a funny old myth too, in Asian countries most women will eat very bland foods for the first 6 weeks while they are in rest. After that the child does get used to the diet and flavours though the mama's milk.
Tan- I get severe after pains but only because I birth so quick. Yours sounds quite normal, the uterus gets a little irritated after birth so any bumps from the outside will set you off. I love the clean when the baby cleans part tee hee!!! Enjoy your baby time.
Jelly, I hope you had a better day today. Expressing a bottle sounds like a good idea. You could try giving her tummy a massage with a carrier oil and a few drops of mandarin oil around the navel, that sometimes works for colic.
Kazzo how is your little man going??
AFM- little one is going along beautifully. I have to wake her every 3-4 hours through the day, she is such a little sleepy head. When she wakes she is really taking everything in, has a little kick around then back to bed. Today she had her first bath, all of her sisters peering over the edge of the bath, baby number four has alot more noise and stimulus in all experiences, it's so funny how full it seems around this house now. She is also doing some great long stretches at night, especially if I can get her to feed a few extra feeds in the afternoon. I am still enjoying alot of rest with hubby taking over all the house and children, I know once he goes back to work real life will kick in hard so I am enjoying the next few days relaxing in between feeds. Tomorrow we are giving the baby her name, the girls are so excited and have managed to guess a name that sounds so similiar to her name its amazing. They did the same thing last time....
Ok, it's 4am, I do not know why I can't sleep but am off to try...
I have heard both theories they might both be right depending on the baby I guess I have definetly found that she will have a really bad night if I have chocolate or more than 250ml of milk but I'm not ready to try broccoli yet its hard enough to get veggies into me ATM
But we had a much better night tonight no screaming at all , I gave her a higher dose of infants friend at every feed and at 4pm gave her a warm bath and started pedaling her legs to get things moving before bedtime and sleeping her on her side
Will buy an electric pump I think some reason my hand pump decided to loose suction so I couldn't get anything out
Glad to hear you had a better night. Sounds like it's time to give up the chocolate for a few days. I ate as much choc before baby knowing it would be going for a few weeks. The screaming is just not worth it, I would rather eat plain brown rice then have a screaming baby. My second daughter screamed for 3 mths it was horrific and very hard to stay sane!!
Food definitely affects my babies. With DS2 I couldn't have any dairy at all without causing him yucky silent reflux. Turns out he is anaphylactic to dairy. With Owen I'm having very little amount of dairy, but I think it affects him because the days I have more he's a lot more unsettled at night.
We'd been having some bowel issues. Since birth Owen had only done a few small poo's. Being a breastfed baby I would have been ok with that except he was extremely uncomfortable and his tummy was sore. The Chiro suggested some probiotics and tummy massage. Yesterday during some nappy off time he exploded. LOL It just kept coming. He was a bit more settled after that. He was still grunting but once asleep he'd stay that way. Which was nice not to have to rock him for his whole sleep.
I am really suprised by what you were told too MLR. I guess there are always going to be people (including lactation consultants) that have differing views after reading research.
I don't like garlic or onions so they are easy for me to avoid. When BF I drink Organic decaff coffee only and with DD2 I even drank rice milk instead, DD2 is fine with dairy now though. I only eat peas, corn and carrots at the moment. I love vegies but love sleep more so to help I eat plain and like LBF said, I slowly start introducing things back in slowly.
Because My babies are slow weight gainers in the beginning I also try and eat good fatty foods like cashews and avocado to try and make my milk as bulky as possible. I figure it is for such a short time that I don't mind missing out if it means my baby is settled. So far we have had one rough night and that is it and that was the first night after my milk came in.
I have actually been thinking about this a lot lately because I am starting to get annoyed that the 1st question I get asked is bubs name followed by is he a good sleeper? He is less then 3 weeks old he sleeps as well as he can considering.
When a baby is in utero they have amnioic fluid and as much or as little as they would like. They only wee, no poo. When they are born their diet changes immediately, they suck in a lot of air while they get their sucking right, they get a small amount of colostrum for a lot of effort. Then their bowels kick in to gear and this is something very new for them, they have never poo'd or broken wind before. For 2-5days they are in a way starved until the mothers milk comes in and then once again their diet rapidly changes and they have to get use to that all over again and then deal with a full feeling. Imagine if you ate one thing only for 9 months and then it was changed suddenly and twice in the space of a week. Would be hard on your body. Just like it is on a baby.
Anyway, my thoughts, might be right, might be wrong but thats how I see it and why I do everything possible in the first couple of months to help my bubba.
Jelly, the leg cycling or pumping is so good I think, DS loves it when I do it.
BMW, Sounds like you got a good poo explosion. I hope that keeps things settled for you. DS only poos every three days and I can really tell when he is getting ready to do one.
LBF, will you be sharing your bubbas name?
DS still has his mastopathy but it is not causing any issues so still just keeping an eye on it. Otherwise he is great. We had a lovely snuggle all day on Friday when the girls were at preschool. We watched all the episodes of Greys anatomy I have missed. It is cold wet and windy here today another perfect day for snuggling but this time with my girls :)
Kazzo - I hate the "is he a good sleeper/baby?" question too. Unfortunately for people who do ask they get the whole shebang response. Well he's a dear little guy but sleeping is an issue and I tell them about it. The other question I get which really does annoy me is "so are you going back for a girl?" Gah!!!! NO! We didn't have a 3rd to have a girl. Yes a girl would have been a nice change, but I'm over the moon with Owen and I'm in no way sad that he's a boy. I wanted 3 kids, didn't matter the sex. I'm pretty glib about it and just say "nah, we're done. We don't want to buy a new car."
For the past few days Owen has been feeding every 2 hours and now this morning he's gone over 3 hours and my boobs feel like they are going to explode. LOL
Kazzo - Your Friday sounds like the perfect day!
BMW- tee hee go Owen, explosive little one!! I was just thinking the same about our little girl she does heaps of small ones and then today explosive!! Very funny. She is so laid back that you can tell she is uncomfortable but she just doesn't cry, very interesting having such a laid back little one after two quite demanding babies, I hope that she stays like this!! Having just had number 4 girl, we are having some funny comments re trying again. We like you decided to have number four because we felt there was another baby for us, not based on gender at all. People are so funny like that assuming some part of you is not complete without both genders.
Kazzo- you and I are very similar, every time you post there is something that sounds just like me!!! I agree with the doing anything to have a settled baby, but I recognize that every mother has their own journey with that too. I actually have a Parent Support Consulting business and one of the things I work with is sleep, so you can imagine everyone puts major pressure on me about the sleep thing considering that is my day job! I always say she is sleeping like a baby, how they interpret that is up to them!! Although this little one is having some awesome sleep going on!! Your snuggle day sounds awesome, I hope you have plenty more with you, your little one and a good TV show!!
I will share her name via PM, so I will text or PM you later today when we have given it to her. We have the people who were at the birth coming to announce it all together, we will have a christening later in the year.
Just getting ready for our first outing, to have cake and tea and share the baby name with some close friends... Like I said above I am happy to PM her name to you, so please let me know if you would like to know the name of our fourth darling little one!!
hi all!
just a quickie from me - it's a beautiful day and i should be either outside or in bed (but SIL is coming over for a visit, so i am having a shower. she is also insisting that we meet at a nearby park which kinda irrits me.... i suggested we meet at the playground directly outside our front door but she didn't like that idea so i don't get an afternoon nap. oh well, what can i expect from my hubby's family :wall:)
LBF: wow a parenting consulting business. do you do consulting via phone? i know some parents here in sweden who need support with a child's sleep issue. PM me! (Also, i'd be interested in hearing the name, if you are willing to share). I am also a quick birther (each birth has been less than 1 hour of active labour) but i don't remember ANY "pain" like this during the first two. i defo think that my body is protesting!!!!
BMW: i made a leek and potato soup last night for the family, swearing i would touch it... but i couldn't resist.
re: whether what mummy eats effects what baby eats..... i think it generally does but it also depends on how sensitive the child is and how developed their constitution is. so that's a non-answer but hopefully covers all sides of the spectrum
re: uterine-constricting pains
jelly: wow, like being in labour. holy crap. i thought braxton-hicks level was bad enough (especially when the middy pushed her hand down on my tummy after the labour, to check whether there were any clots that needed to come out, i shoved her off - oops!!)
ok, have a nice rest of the weekend you guys!!
ps - i got the "sleep when the baby sleeps, clean when the baby cleans" line from this website, which summarises all the sleep advice, copy-and-pasted here:
"You shouldn’t sleep train at all, before a year, before 6 months, or before 4 months, but if you wait too late, your baby will never be able to sleep without you. College-aged children never need to be nursed, rocked, helped to sleep, so don’t worry about any bad habits. Nursing, rocking, singing, swaddling, etc to sleep are all bad habits and should be stopped immediately.
Naps should only be taken in the bed, never in a swing, car seat, stroller, or when worn. Letting them sleep in the car seat or swing will damage their skulls. If your baby has trouble falling asleep in the bed, put them in a swing, car seat, stroller, or wear them. Use the crib only for sleep and keep it free of distractions. If the baby is having trouble adjusting to the crib, have them play in it first. If the baby wakes up at night and wants to play, put fun toys in the crib to distract them.
Put the baby in a nursery, bed in your room, in your bed. Co-sleeping is the best way to get sleep, except that it can kill your baby, so never, ever do it. If your baby doesn't die, you will need to bed-share until college.
Keep the room warm, but not too warm. Swaddle the baby tightly, but not too tightly. Put them on their backs to sleep, but don't let them be on their backs too long or they will be developmentally delayed. Give them a pacifier to reduce SIDS. Be careful about pacifiers because they can cause nursing problems and stop your baby from sleeping soundly. If your baby sleeps too soundly, they’ll die of SIDS.
Don’t let your baby sleep too long, except when they’ve been napping too much, then you should wake them. Never wake a sleeping baby. Any baby problem can be solved by putting them to bed earlier, even if they are waking up too early. If your baby wakes up too early, put them to bed later or cut out a nap. Don’t let them nap after 5 p.m. Sleep begets sleep, so try to get your child to sleep as much as possible. Put the baby to bed awake but drowsy. Don't wake the baby if it fell asleep while nursing.
You should start a routine and keep track of everything. Don’t watch the clock. Put them on a schedule. Scheduling will make your life impossible because they will constantly be thrown off of it and you will become a prisoner in your home.
Using the "Cry It Out" method (CIO) will make them think they’ve been abandoned and will be eaten by a lion shortly. It also causes brain damage. Not getting enough sleep will cause behavior and mental problems, so be sure to put them to sleep by any means necessary, especially CIO, which is the most effective form. CIO is cruel beyond belief and the only thing that truly works because parents are a distraction.
Formula and solid foods will help the baby sleep longer. Solid foods shouldn’t be given at night because they might wake the baby. Don't stop the baby from nursing when asleep. Be wary of night feeds. If you respond too quickly with food or comfort, your baby is manipulating you. Babies can’t manipulate. Babies older than six months can manipulate.
Sleep when the baby sleeps. Clean when the baby cleans. Don’t worry. Stress causes your baby stress and a stressed baby won't sleep."
Kazzo what's mastopathy? Hope he's better soon
Tanya yeah it was only that bad for 2 days though but every time I got them I'd have to get dh to grab baby because I thought I'd drop her
BMW I wasn't fussed on gender either and always get the oh well your done having kids cause you have one of each but I would love dd to have a sister I love having a sister and couldn't imagine life without her and would love ds to have a brother lol pity I couldn't guarantee one of each again , we would need a new car if we had a third no way we could fit 3 car seat in ours I'm not sure I would want to be pregnant and go through newborn stage and post birth recovery again either mayby we could adopt lol
Still feeling unwell and sore from infection only 3days left of antibiotics hope they do there job in 3 days trying to think how to entertain ds today hoping the sun stays out and I can take him to park
Jelly, it is just like mastitis. It is from hormones, so hopefully they will settle soon and it will go away. They can become infected easily so I check for redness and heat every nappy change.
BMW, I got similar, "You have a boy now you can stop". My answer is just 'maybe' now. I can't be bothered with a full answer any more for that queastion.
LBF, I get the same from you in the way you think. I can't ait to hear her name. I hope you had a lovely outing. I love the Sleeps like a baby answer. Your right it really is open to any individuals interpretation.
DH came home from work yesterday and had to go to his parents so he took the girls, so I got a nice snuggle afternoon.
