Clare, so sad when they outgrow their baby things. I am already starting to back away the little baby gear - E is a big bubba now, sitting, solids etc - no more babies here so all the tiny stuff has to go.
MP, where would you be moving? How exciting!
MD, we had tears every day I left W at kindy last week. Hopefully it doesn't last too long but considering the upset at leaving me when he goes with DH I don't think we are in for a break any time soon.
More sleep issues, more separation anxiety, more tantrums, he just never seems happy - can 4 year olds be depressed??!!
I had a sudden realization that when W is at school and A is at kindy then I will be doing 2 or 3 return trips to town each day @40minutes per trip. So we have decided to sell our house and hopefully move into a company house in town. There is a really good one about to become vacant that would be perfect, but I don't like our chances of selling this place in a hurry. We have made a start on painting it so it doesn't look so run down and hopefully will get it on the market in a few weeks.

Arte, isn't there a school bus he can catch when he's older? That is an awful lot of travelling though so I don't blame you for wanting to move into town. Are you able to take the company house even though you haven't sold your other one yet? WOuld be a shame to miss out on a good house.
Cass, how are you going with the hunt for decent food? Every time you post about the food other there makes me think of Jamie Oliver and Morgan Spurlock :lol: I hope you're able to find a little community of friends for the kids soon, that would be a lot for L to adjust to.

And the kids are back at school! It feels like I am finally back into a routine. I can't wait to hear who their teachers are for this year. The first day back is always exciting. A doesn't start preschool till next week. He will have a different teacher this year so I've had to prepare him for that because I think he thought he would have the same teacher again. P's ENT appt is tomorrow too finally! Can't believe it was 4 months ago I made the appointment LOL, at the time the 31st seemed like ages away!
Trill, your trip is getting close now. Are you getting excited? :D My thing in Canberra has changed dates, it's now in may - jammed right between the budget and parliament sitting so won't getting accommodation be fun? :lol: Might have to couch surf with one of my ole library buddies.
Yes first day back is V EXCITING! Except that most of the parents dropped and ran... who would've thought that 6 weeks of school hols was the difference in whether being seen in public with your parent was socially acceptable or not? :lol:. Anyway I was *most* relieved to see that there were a goodly number of girls who were also wearing the old-style (second-hand) uniforms, not just my H.
Arte, how do you feel about the move back closer to "town"? Could you rent your house out while you're in the company house? I agree, definitely don't let the good house opportunity slip past you. I hope W has a better week with the kindy drop offs.
Cass, yep I've had visions of Morgan Spurlock too. LOL. We watched the new Muppets movie yesterday, set in LA...I was all "ooooh that's where Cass is" ....hmmm didn't see any playgrounds though. But I did realise something: You're in Buffys-ville! You'd better go on a Buffy Tour and when you do, I want a photo of you standing outside of "Sunnydale High School" with a stake in your hand!! I think they did most of the college shots at UCLA so you have *no excuse* for not gettin ya slayer on, girl!
MP - wow "developments" sound exciting! As usual I wait with bated breath for the next exciting installment of living vicariously through your adventures LOL.
AFM - I've not got 6 blissful hours of P&Q before I have to collect children. BLISS!
There is a school bus, but I am almost certain that he would not go on it. Unless he has a complete personality transplant in the next 8 months, a bus with kids he doesn't know and without me is just not going to work for him.
We can't afford rent and mortgage so we have to wait until this place sell unfortunately and I don't think we can have a company house if we were renting ours out. It was my idea to move - not going to be good for Erin to be in the car for two hours a day.
MD and Trill, hope you are enjoying your P and Q. Trill, does A get bored when the others are away or does he like the alone time?
He likes the alone time, but by lunch time he's asking if it's time to get them off the bus yet. I'll post a pic on FB later though showing how bored he got earlier today though ;) I think the first week they go back is a bit of adjustment for him.

cally- I've been totally inspired by your K's swimming ability so I've been taking the boys nearly everyday. L can now jump in the water at one side of the pool and swim to the other side unassisted. he can also swim down and grab something off the bottom of the pool -in the shallow end. awesome!
not much going on here- just hanging for kinder to go back tbh!!
Well it sounds like first day was excellent. No actual classes for DD1, but they spent the day with their home group (it's just like Harry Potter where your 'house' is the big thing), and toured around, given lockers, etc. She's got one of posse in her home group and another friend who moved away in Grade 6 has reappeared and is also in her home group, so she's pretty pleased about that.
Missy E also had an excellent day at kindy and it sounds like she was really engrossed in the sea animal paintings they did. She's trotted happily off to bed so worn out in a good way :).
MD, that sounds like a good first day outcome. How was it seeing your baby go off to high school?
G, L's swimming sounds fantastic! How is he going after the surgery?
We are only fixing up some broken boards on the house and painting the outside and tidying up the gardens. We could go on forever - needs new kitchen/bathroom/carpet and half of the rooms still need painting but we will just do this bit and then sell as is (hopefully).
Stayed at kindy today since A is loving it so much now. She is really coming along with her speech. I really love the emergent talkers and the things they come up with.
E is determined to be a big girl already and wants to sit and play with the big kid toys.
Being a single parent in the mornings is not fun! 3 days into the year and I'm already over it..... I think there will be some family discussions tonight on the morning rules as everything seems to have gone out the window in the holidays (but the first morning went so well!)

Trill - I'm not sure what is going on with her tummy. On the weekend she managed 3 poos in 3 hours - but all were solid with no sore tummy. I'm just pushing for lots of normal food, DH is really bad at making 'sometimes' food part of the everyday diet. I was pleased that they're talking about the food pyramid at day care this term.
It's easy to fall into bad eating habits during the holidays Cally. Mayber her tummy just needs a bit of extra time to recover, especially since she's never had a tummy bug before. Some probiotic yoghurt like vaalia will help her gut heal. I hope you can get your morning routine sorted out. I hate feeling rushed on school days.
G, we're definitely still meeting up. Mayaness and OP have had to cancel on me so I'm all yours! Doesn't even have to be at the botanical gardens either if you didn't want to come all the way in.

MD, so good to hear H had a positive first day. Even though they didn't do much she still had a good day reconnecting with her friends. What days does E go to kindy?
The kids have settled back into school OK I think. By that I mean the girls are fine, but L is a bit of a worry. The teacher he has this year is the one he hoped that he didn't get. He had her for Literacy last year and he felt a bit confused by her at times because she never really explained what she expected of them when she gave them a task to do. And the last 4 teachers he's had have all been the extremely organised type, but this teacher isn't and is a lot more casual than he's used to. She is a nice person and a good teacher, but just totally different to what he is used to and he's worried that he wont get pushed as hard as he has been. So I told him that he needed to learn to push himself instead of relying on others to push him. He's OK, but it will take a lot of getting used to I think. One positive is that on thursdays they spend most of the day at the high school for 'middle school', but this year he and a few other year 6 kids have been accelerated with maths and literacy so every thursday they will spend the entire day at the high school and do secondary maths and english in the mornings and then their regular middle school program after recess. He is really happy with that so I told him to focus on that for a bit.
And P had her ENT appt yesterday and we have a surgery date of March 20 to have her tonsils and adenoids out. The tonsils are huge, but they aren't causing the snoring - it's the massive adenoids she has and they are blocking her nasal passage. So he's more concerned about them, but he is doing the tonsils at the same time because he said they can become a problem because of their size. She only needs to stay in for one night provided everything goes well.
March 20 will be here in no time. How does P feel about it, is she worried at all or looking forward to the ice cream and being able to sleep better? That is good about L doing the accelerated program up at the HS.
Yeah, might have to do something with the probiotics. She was complaining in bed about a sore tummy, but has fallen asleep OK.
She is a bit nervous but I think she will be OK. I told her that I would be there with her the whole time and she felt a bit better knowing that. We're interested to see if it will change her voice much at all.
Poor Miss K, it must be a bit worrying for her to feel like that, she wouldn't be used to it.
trill we found it changed his voice for the first few weeks but now it has gone back to normal.

Trill: wow, that date will come up super fast! i am certain that P will feel heaps heaps better with them out. i want L to get hers out too as she had alot of sleep aponea as a baby and i *feel* that her ginormous tonsils play a part. she has a slight snore happening too...

Cass, how is everything going?
Erin has picked up a bug and has been snotty and coughing. Her voice has gone so she makes a rasping zombie sound - she is in good spirits though and likes making sounds with her new voice. She hasn't fed all day though and now my boobs may just explode. It is day 3 now and she is sleeping a lot so hopefully we are in the tail end of it. I got some AB's today just in case she gets worse over the long weekend (no doctor on call).
While I was at the Dr I talked to him about W's sleeping. He is back to waking multiple times and having tantrums. We have been leaving him with the iPod watching movies at 2am if we can get him calmed down enough, just to keep him quiet so we can get some sleep. It is just way past stupid now. He is 4.5 years old and I don't think it is normal for him to be waking so often and having big meltdowns. So he is going to get a referral to some sort of something and we will go to that. I could live with everything else - the constant worry, the way he picks on Amelia, the tantrums, the socks (BUT THE LINE ISN'T STRAIGHT!!). But I just don't have it in me to do another round of this night waking. Even on a full dose of phenergan he can wake and tantrum for an hour or so. He was going so well after E was born right up until Xmas and then it fell apart again. Even DH is now admitting there is something just not quite right with him. Nothing we can name specifically, just a few too many things that might be normal on their own but add together iykwim.

Arte: :hug: the night-waking is awful xx I hate how insanely exhausting it is, especially with tantrums thrown in...and I only have to deal with a 16 month old tanty (short-lived lol).
Let's see what the specialist can recommend and go from there I guess xx
Trill: the hunt for good food is doable. i am blowing whole paychecks at a super place called 'wholefoods'. it is a locally sourced and organic place (here in the US they sell GM modified food without labelling etc and have crazy bad ingredients in common food that you would expect to be pure ITMS...like even organic bread here can be full of JUICE :o).
G: how did you manage with the boys at swimming? I want to take the girls but am too scaredy pants to take them both on my own. i need tips!
AFM: we are finally really settling in! the jetlag is over and we have a bit of routine. (ie coffee shop, then playground, then walk home lol). Every second day we do a trip out of westwood (this is the suburb we live). so the other day we went to Venice and hung out at Muscle beach (re: the LA scenes of topless, muscled men doing exercises and rollerblading and girls in bikinis doing beach volleyball lol). it was quite....boring lol. the one thing that i am finding about this place is that it is really struggling. and i have strong suspicions that it has been struggling long before any official GFC. One thing that DH and i both noticed separately is that it reminds us of a third world country...i know, weird lol. It is in decay. the sidewalks are barely walkable, the buildings are falling apart. the shops etc are using such old fitouts etc. i dont know, it's hard to explain as it is not one thing but a combination of things that makes this impression IYKWIM.
Even beverly hills was a bit underwhelming. i guess with globalisation and that, we are seeing the same stores, except that in Australia the stores are actually better lol.
i know that i sound like a grinch, but i am suprised. i kinda expected a bit of a downturn, but the level of decay most certainly precedes the GFC. of course, this will not stop us from enjoying Universal studios and Disneyland lol!
we are thinking of actually getting out of here a bit earlier and heading to italy say in June as opposed to July, as although it is cool and all, we are finding it a *bit* boring...it is very monocultural here and one place is much of muchness with the other (this is very much an LA thing though...NY and DC when we went a few years ago were amazing!).
the girls are having a great time though and they are really loved by the locals :) leila's accent is a winner apparently!
