Hey Dr T, how is B, did he get sick like you were afraid he might?

I took T to day care for the first time yesterday. It was just for a few hours as a trial run. There was a moment there when I was telling the carer that he'd never had formula before that I almost lost it! I just can't seem to express much these days, so bought a box of 4 sachets of formula for his first day. My plan was that I'd only need to use them this once and express the feed he would have had if he'd been with me and freeze it for the next week (not that he has any routine whatsoever!). Now that I write that I realize I would have had to do that for a couple of weeks at least. Anyway, the carer made up the formula and tried to feed it to him, but he wouldn't take it! Apparently he had 30ml but only because she squirted it into his mouth. Not that she called to tell me this, and he was ready for a feed when I got there two hours later. I hope he wasn't hungry that whole time. :( I don't know whether it was the bottle or the formula itself that he objected to. He's been happy to consume bottles of expressed milk in the past but it's been a couple of months since we last gave him a bottle. We're going to experiment to try and figure out which it is.

I have to admit I REALLY enjoyed having 3 hours to myself! When I got home I felt like I could breathe more deeply or something, a bit like after he was born! Though I kept wondering if he was okay or whether he was crying, but was able to console myself by thinking how much he cries here with me anyway! He was fine when I left him. When I got back the carer was feeding the only other baby there while T was on the floor, and T was crying but I think it was just an "I'm bored" kind of cry.

Emma - Yeah B is sick again. Thursday night he was quite unsettled and Friday when I woke up he had gummy eyes a snotty nose and a fever. Made a doctors appointment for him and it's just a cold. Panadol, wipe his eyes clean and squirt saline down his nose....again. Poor little mite. He's happy enough though as long as he's with me. Not sure yet if he'll be well enough to go to daycare on Tuesday or not.

Not sure if this will make you feel any better or not, but B completely refuses milk when he's at daycare. He won't drink milk from a bottle, from a sippy cup or from a squirt (tupperware type) bottle. Thankfully I am able to visit him at lunch so he gets his lunch feed at least. I was a bit worried about him getting enough calcium so I introduced cheese a bit earlier then I was going to and I make sure he has some cheese for either morning or afternoon tea. Then he goes down on boob juice like it's going out of style when he gets home. But on the days he's home he still wants his 10 and 3 feed, so it's not that he doesn't want BM any more he just doesn't want it from them. I've even given him a bottle and sippy cup here with it in it and he drinks it from me and DH, he just won't from them. So if T still refuses formula/bottle it might be worth while intoducing him to some sort of dairy product. As long as he's still having lots of feeds in the afternoon/night and a morning feed it should be okay, especially if you are able to slip out during lunch and feed him then.

Dr. Tal - I haven't tried a chiro yet as i've been happy enough with the osteo. Would I do both? I also had a difficult second stage and had a vacuum extraction after almost 2 hours of pushing so Finn was definitely 'out of alignment' according to the osteo. Sorry to hear you've had to go back to work and that B has been sick. I don't think I could do child care just yet so i'm very luck that I can stay at home for the time being. I'm very impressed that B can crawl, Finn is nowhere near crawling yet!

EmmaJane - with regards to sitting, Finn can sit if I place him in a sitting position but he can't actually put himself in a sitting position yet. He has plenty of padding though which helps him to stay sitting upright! I hope you can work out why T wouldn't take the bottle so you can introduce it again, i'm sure leaving him would be much easier once you know he won't be hungry.

Well i'm having a 'woe is me' day today. Finn's 3rd tooth is coming through, it was through the other day but has gone back up again. Unfortunately while it was still down he bit me while I was feeding and with top and bottom teeth it hurt quite a bit! That afternoon I started to get a bit sore and the next day feeding was incredibly painful, so fearing mastitis I went to the GP. She didn't think it was but gave me antibiotics anyway. Two days later no improvement and now a big red line starting at my nipple so back to the GP for more antibiotics and suspected blood poisoning!!! I'm trying to express so I don't lose my supply but even that hurts, so will have to see how I go. Has anyone else had anything like this happen? Did you get through it?! I'm just dying trying to feed him, I'm not expressing much at all and he won't take the bottle anyway and he wakes at least twice during the night for a feed so I just have to feed him and grit my teeth...

Owens - WELCOME BACK :leap: of course you're welcome here! Can't wait to hear how A is going and how your other little ones are liking having a new (or perhaps not so new now) baby sister.

Lise - OUCH! Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I can't say I've had anything like that at all. All I can think is that when F bit you he broke the skin and you ended up getting an infection. I know human bites can be quite nasty infection wise. Does the doctor know you think it might have been from a bite? that might make a difference in what you are given to treat it. It's a lot harder to do but have you tried manual extraction as opposed to a breast pump? That doesn't focus so much on the nipple so to speak to might not hurt as much. Just a thought.

AFU - B has his doctors appointment to have another look at his hypospaedeus (sp??) and to determine which op he'll need (the easy or the hard) and to schedule an operation date. :crossfingers: :pray: that it's only the 'easy' one he'll need.

Lise, I hope you're feeling better. I had a really really sore right breast about a month ago. Was tender in the morning, by that night I could hardly touch it! I iced it literally with ice packs all night and just put Annabelle on constantly to feed. I was exhausted and it absolutely killed, but by lunch the next day, it was starting to feel better. Don't know what it was and not the same as you, but it worked for me, hope you get it sorted quickly!!!

AFU - so Annabelle is an amazing baby, so placid and easy , the easiest of my 4 children for sure. She's not sleeping through yet so thats hard as my twins still don't sleep through either and they're 3 :( .Besides that, she's just lovely. I had her weighed last Thur and has just reached 6kg. A is starting to crawl, but as she's quite little she looks funny moving about everywhere. :) Im very proud of myself as im still bf Annabelle - I didn't feed my other children for long, so its been an amazing experience. I now understand the bond mothers talk about with their babies when it comes to bf. I really didn't get it before, but it really is special. Im suprised I've made it to almost 7 months though, its hectic with a 6yr old, the twins being 3 and trying to feed A. I swear they wait until im feeding to be starving, thirsty, NEED that toy, want a cuddle etc etc lol. But we're managing! :)
I found it hard after having A with not having my mum here, but had some amazing friends help me through. Unfortunately they've been posted away with the army recently so am missing them terribly atm .
My other 3 children adore Annabelle, so I think that has made having a new baby easier.

Owens - So glad to hear that A is such a fantastic baby! And it must make it all the better with your other three adoring her. That's FANTASTIC about the BF as well. You must be really stoked.

Sorry it's making it hard missing your mum though and with having your friends posted away :hug: Just curious where you are located if you don't mind telling people.

AFU - Lets see how far I get.
Yesterday at the specialist appointment. B's operation date is set for the 14th of Feb. At the moment he's going to try to do the 'easy' operation as (pardon the non technical term) his pee tube is in an okay place. Problem is that there is very little skin covering the top section of his pee tube. The doctor said it's like tissue paper, so there is a very high chance that he could 'spring a leak' (doctors exact words) in which case he'll need to reconstruct the pee tube (what he's hoping he doesn't have to do) the 'hard' op. The 'easy' op is just day surgery, but if things don't go quite right and he ends up having to do the 'hard' one B will be in hospital for a week.

Today I kept B home from daycare again. He's still sick and didn't seem to be getting better. Took him into the doctor and he's got a chest infection (just starting) and an ear infection...which apparenlty the doctor seems to think he's had for quite some time :o I feel horrible for not having noticed! But he's not pulling or tugging at his ear and he's not whingy or anything, just clingy, but I assumed that was do to the stuffy nose he's had (perhaps something to do with the amber teething necklace I have on him??) That having been said he had him into the doctor only about 10 days ago for his vomiting and the doctor didn't pick it up then. Today's doctor thinks he's had it for about 2 weeks. Neighter DH or I liked the doctor B saw last time (he had him in hysterics after only taking his temp :angry: ) but after today we'll definitely not be using him again even if he's the only one with an open appointment. So poor little B is on antibiotics now for both of them...oh well. Stupid daycare (don't know if that's where he actually picked them up, but I'll blame them anyway, makes me feel better :lol: ) So he's not allowed to go to daycare for the rest of the week, which means I also don't have to go to work :leap:

just want to pop in and say Dr Tal dont feel bad about not picking up on an ear infection they can go unoticed for a long time in some children, poor lil B. With the antibiotics maybe go get him some childrens inner health plus (probiotics) too many anti biotics can really mess with him tummy and probiotics will help balance out the good bad bacteria in his system. maybe you could investigate a vitamin supplement for him also help build up his poor little immune system, there is one called pentavite but I cant remember what age group can have it he may be too little, I dont like pentavite coz it has artificial colours but you could speak to a naturopath. You are a great mum and doing such a fantatic job, lets hope B only needs the easy surgery.

Owens - I was thinking if you lived near me we could meet up, but nope...I'm in Townsville, defnintely not near you!

Sal - I waqws thinking I shoudl probably give B something because of the antibiotics, but I wasn't too sure what he could have. I was thinking about looking in the shops and trying to find him a yoghurt without any sugar in it, even just a plain one and I could add some fruit to it for him.

I'm beginning to think he might take after me in the health department :shakehead: I've always been really prone to chest infections and spend about a quarter of my childhood with either bronchitis or pneumonia :( I'm really hoping that this isn't the start of that for him.

AFU - On a much happier note. I got B's swim nappies in the mail today :leap: they are SO ADORABLE! He's suppose to have his first swim lesson on Sat, but I'm not sure now if he's going to be well enough to go. Doctor said he could provided I thought he was well enough. So :crossfingers: we still have about 2 days to go, so with any luck he'll be feeling better!

Well after doubling my dosage of antibiotics i've FINALLY started to feel a bit better so yay for me!!

Dr T - you can't notice something if there are no symptoms! Glad you get to stay home with B, hope he's feeling better for swimming lessons. I'm going to start F soon too, so i'll be interested to see what you think and how they work.

Owens - i'm so in awe that you have time to come on here with 4 children, I barely manage with just one!

Hi ladies. Sorry about the me post, but I just wanted to sound this out.

I think T must be getting the majority of his food at night, and this could explain his waking up every 2-3 hours these days. I have been wondering recently how much he's feeding during the day, because it seems like I offer him the breast but he might have a couple of half-hearted sucks and lose interest. Whereas at night he's inconsolable until he gets booby!!

Today T's at day care for the second time. He went to sleep at 7.20pm, woke up a few times before 11.30 but until then DH was trying to put him back to sleep. Then I fed him at 11.30, 2.30am and 4.30am. He woke up at 6.30am (which is much later than his usual 5am-ish!). And I literally haven't fed him much at all since then. I tried to feed him at about 7.45am when we got to day care, then I went back again half an hour later because the carer thought he was ready. But when I got there he was happy in her arms and I tried to feed him but again not interested. I called a while later to see how he was going and he was napping, so I asked her to call me when he woke so I could go feed him. So at around 10.30am I tried again, and STILL not interested! I haven't been back since then so not sure what's happening. She had some baby food to give him for lunch so if he's hungry he'll eat that. I've expressed bout 70ml the whole day and my boobs aren't exploding or antyhing. So I'm seriously thinking he must do most of his breastfeeding over night!!!

What do you guys think? I wonder if there's a pain-free way (for all of us) to get him feeding more in the day.

hey em just a thought do you think maybe his mouth could be sore from teething or something so its hurts him to feed during the day and at night he is comfort sucking. How long has this been happening for.
