Babies born~December 1st-15th 2009 #3

Hi Rose - I'll be over for lessons on the Desire for sure! lol DH's brother who is a computer guy said the Desire and the iPhone4 are very very similar but if he had to choose he'd go the Desire, just because it is apparently run through Linux and operates via Google and so has more opportunity for apps etc....he said the iPhone being an Apple product means you are limited to Apple apps only. Apparently Apple and Adobe for example had a fight so now you can't use anything associated with Adobe which includes Flashplayer so if you want to download something using that you can't. Anyway, that's what he said, he did tell me other stuff but he got a bit technical for me so I switched off lol. I'm still trying to work out how to send a bloomin text message! ha ha. It's great though, love it so far.

Well everyone, I had a lovely birthday weekend but it's been a little marred with Amelia coming down with her 2nd cold in 4 weeks!!! This one is a little worse as her nose is really snotty and blocked this time, I got up 6 times to her last night and eventually at 4.30 am I gave in and put her in bed with us - haven't done that in months, I just couldn't settle her and the more she cried the worse her nose got, it was bubbling it was so bad. Poor petal. I just feel awful for her. Then today we had lunch out with my family and then went back to my sister's for cake, she was happy enough but she would not go to sleep. I've just got her to bed now at 7.15 pm, she has been awake since 11.00 am - except for half an hour in the car on the way from the restaurant to my sister's she has been awake for 6.5 hours, it's just ridiculous. I don't know what tonight will bring, it will either mean she will be awake all night again with her nose or she'll be so pooped she'll sleep - I'm expecting the worst though. Is it normal to have 2 colds in 4 weeks though? I'm not sure where she got this one from although the swimming teacher last week came to teach the class with a cold (WTF!!)....I won't be taking her this week if she's unwell.

Anyway, best go, will write some more tomorrow. Thanks for all your birthday wishes this weekend, I cherish our friendship a lot and feel blessed to have met you girls.

Tilda Jett wouldn't take the prune juice so I was using a syringe and I would get about 5-10mls a few times a day.

Gee.. how often does this happen! I just wrote the longest post ever and WAMMO! it's gone...AGH!

Tilda, I have a a feeling it's teeth...my friend's baby who is super easy was giving her trouble with sleeping and she just discovered the two little teeth had pushed through this WE...check out her gums to see if anything is pushing through :) If Eva wakes up every day at 630 that would be awesome but usually it is more like 5am! Since she was sleeping later she started waking at 630, but she has gone back to her normal bedtime for two days now and up at 5 for a 530 feed since then...lol...Whatever, she might just be an early riser...

For poo, try to find a magnesium infused water - I used it sometimes, when Eva has not pooed or to steam veggies that might constipate...I think a bit of diluted juice helps, and avoid banana, apple, and potatoes because they solidify poo - When she had gastro I found that out! Give her a bit of water in a cup - I have been doing that since Eva started veggies too, Alison is right - remember that they are used to a liquid diet!!! It is also a good way to introduce the cup...Eva won't take water in a bottle but LOVES it in a cup, but be ready to change her afterwards - dribble, dribble :)

Alison - HAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPY belated BIRTHDAY!!!! Sorry to not have posted this WE but I have no comp upstairs anymore since going back to work - my comp is in the office, and I have a hard time being motivated enough to go to the office to get online - I only skim stuff on my phone...I hope it was gorgeous because you deserve a gorgeous day to celebrate your gorgeous self ;) - Hope Amelia gets better :( - Eva was like that a bit back - the electric pump is great for getting all that stuff out - I put phsyiologic water in her nose then suck all the stuff out..She HATES it but afterwards she can breathe, just make sure when you put the liquid that he head is turned sideways...poor thing...

And honey, once you go Iphone, you'll never go back - I have like 40 albums of Eva on my phone, all my music, agenda, emails etc...you'll love it! The iphone is great for "non-tech people" - Only IT people or serious computer fans complain of a lack of apps, since Apple has tons and tons!

Lani, nice to see you have some time to post and yay for the self settling!!!!! I am glad you got some time to take care of yourself, it makes such a difference!

Kanda, I am typing this post in word! It happens pretty damn often! :)

AFM - well, my little Eva is on all fours now about 85% of the time she spends on the floor, she gets up there or in plank position and rocks back and forth...She does the backwards crawl on her knees now!!! I dropped her off this morning at daycare and as soon as she was on the floor, she just bounced right up on to her knees and back and forth and back and forth - the girl who takes care of her looked at me and said, time for baby proofing - crawling is coming very soon! I got some new pics, I'llput up later...

We had father's day here in Belgium so we spent the We with DH and the ILs...We got a cool design birdfeeder of FIL - he loves putting bowls of food ont he terrace by his office window to have the gorgeous birds from this region come eat..but they are ugly and get full of water all the time, so he was really happy.

I got DH a full volume of all of the luxury watches on the market and left hand wrote a card from Eva and myself...They also made him a cute little picture frame at daycare with a pic of Eva and her little fingerprints were used to decorate the frame - super cute :)

My girl is just gorgeous, I can't take it! She has been up on all fours contantly, so affectionate and just wonderful and her week of not sleeping well is over, - I see why she was so restless, but remembe rI was saying it seems she is trying to crawl in bed? That was it, she is now on all fours and will be moving soon. She has also picked up speed in that walker of hers.

Next weekend Dh and I are staying in for baby proofing!

kanda - Losing posts is the most annoying thing.

Alison - I hope Amelia is feeling a little bit better. Poor little thing getting another cold so quickly. I think it's supposed to be normal for them to get something like 7-10 colds in their first year of life.

Tilda - Glad that Matilda has pooed! Isn't it amazing how we all get obsessed with poo! I haven't given Liam anything like meat or pasta yet - just veggies and fruit, oats, rice cereal and rusks. I don't know when I'll introduce meat, need to look up some guidelines.

Hi to everyone else, as usual I have too damn much to scroll back through.

AFM - Holy crap, today I feel like someone has replaced my baby with another one. And in a good way.

Liam's always had short periods of being a "good" baby - content to be left alone for a little while, happy and laughing etc. But these have been interspersed with longer periods of being very fussy. Today, for the first time since he was born, he didn't have a single fussy period. Not even grizzling near the end of the day when he was getting tired. It's amazing how much difference getting enough sleep makes.

I think we can call the move into his room a success. He's now waking only once a night to feed, though he needed to be resettled once last night (because he had to burp and woke himself up). And he slept in until somewhere around 7:30am. Now I just need to stop waking up every two hours in anticipation of him waking up!

Next step is to work on his daytime naps and see if we can get him doing more than catnaps. But even if he doesn't, it's no huge deal right now - he wakes up from a catnap happy enough, and so long as he has enough total hours of naps, he seems to do fine.

I've been reading the 90 minute baby sleep book - really interesting stuff about their awake and sleep cycles being 90 minutes - so they'll be primed to go to sleep after being awake for 90 minutes or 3 hours etc. I'm going to keep an eye on Liam and see if it's true ad see if it helps getting him into longer naps.

Hi Rose - glad Liam is sleeping better for you, isn't it amazing what some sleep does for you. I've lost mine at the moment (see below) and it's killing me! Re the 90 minute thing, what's that about? Would be interested to hear that one. I've found since keeping Amelia awake a bit longer in the day her day naps are longer, she is having at least 1.5 hours but up to 2 hours as well (except for the at the moment with this darn cold). She can also last to 3 hours if needs be but can't go longer than that without getting cranky.

AFM - just a quick post as I'm shattered. This cold is worse than the last, poor thing can't breathe so is waking heaps in the night, I was up with her from 1.30 am to 3.30 am this morning solidly, she literally can't breathe through her nose so I have to get her upright until she goes to sleep again. Honestly, my eyeballs are hanging out of my head this morning - I got up a couple more times to check on her but the other times she managed to go back to sleep. I have no idea how long this cold will last but I have a feeling we're in for a good week of this at least. Unfortunately I think her nose is as bad as mine gets and not being able to give her any sudafed or anything means it might take longer I guess. I wish there was more I could do, I'm dousing her with Vicks, have the vaporizer on, using the Fess and the suction thing which she absolutely hates, what else can I do!

Anyway, I must go have a shower while I can, I think I'm going to have to have a sleep this afternoon when she does, of course she's sleeping less in the day too. She's so tired, she wants to go to sleep but as soon as she closes her eyes she wakes up again because of her damn nose - she can't even suck on her dummy because she can't breathe with it in. Makes me realise how much she likes her dummy at night! Wish me luck girls, I think I'm going to need it to get through this week. Honestly I feel like I just get a couple of good weeks and then she gets sick, first gastro, then a cold, then wonder week and teething and now teething and another cold, grrrr! No matter how crap she must feel she still manages to smile and she has learnt to clap hands now, when we sing that clap handies clap handies till daddy comes home song she does it, it's so cute. How can you be mad when they're sick.

Hi Alison - poor little Amelia! It's awful when they're so sick. Matilda's last cold was quite bad too and lasted a bit over a week. But the worst was over within the week. You're doing absolutely everything you can. So just keep it up and it will pass.

Hi Rose - it's great to hear how well Liam is going. He seems to be going from strength to strength! I find the same thing as Alison with the day naps - that I'm better off keeping her up a bit longer to make sure she's tired enough to have a good sleep. Otherwise she just wakes up when I put her down or after 30 to 40 minutes.

Hi BS - I hope it is just teeth that's unsettling her. It's always hard when you can't quite put your finger on it. Sounds like Eva is getting really quite mobile. And that all fathers and grandfathers got a good spoiling.

Hi Lani - I will have to try the syringe. And maybe a sippee cup too.

Kanda - No fair that you lost your post. It's such a pain. And we would have loved to hear how you're going.

AFM - Well a bit of a useless morning. I dragged Matilda out to go to a new mother's group right around the time she was due for her first sleep. I thought if I don't just go today I never will and I thought she might fall asleep in the pram....but no. So I get to the cafe where it's supposed to be and there is no-one there!! And I have one grumpy baby on my hands. So I trudge back home with Matilda screaming most of the way and people staring and giving me dark looks. At least she went down quickly and deeply when we did get home. I'm going through another one of my crises of self-confidence re feed to sleep versus self-settling. I was just skimming through a book I have called the Dream Baby Guide and Matilda wakes up at all the classic times that babies that don't self settle wake up during the night - around 10, 2 and 5 (and more if I'm unlucky). So, do I just bide my time and trust that it will change (which DH reckons will happen) or do I bite the bullet and do some self-settling/controlled crying? A friend has just gone down the controlled crying route and it took a week. She said it was heartbreaking but that it worked. My concern is not that it disturbs my sleep but that it disturbs Matilda's sleep. I see these awful references in the media and in "expert books" that link "sleep disorders" in babies with drug addiction later in life. Oh the guilt!! Don't the media and book publishers know how to press your buttons and sell books!! For those that have tried the self-settling techniques, was there LOTS of crying? Do you think it was worth it? Or do you think you just go back to square one when the next WW comes around, cold or teething? Someone at the door. See you later on!

Tilda - I don't know if this will help at all, but I've never done any kind of controlled crying with Liam (though I've thought about it - I do hate the idea of it, though). And I feed to sleep almost all of the time still. He will occasionally go to sleep with some rocking, but invariably he needs to be fed. I've been working on feeding him until he's *sleepy* instead of totally asleep, which is helping I think.

Other than that, I've done nothing, and he just started learning to soothe himself back to sleep on his own at night. The move into his own room has helped him so much. Most nights I actually hear him wake and cry a bit, then he goes quiet. I think something that's really helped him has been the fact that he's started to suck his thumb, too, so he has an easy method of self soothing.

I'm still slightly in shock here, because he actually slept through the night last night - almost twelve hours of solid sleep without a wake up. He did stir a bit at 6:30am, but went back to sleep for an hour before he started calling out. I was crazy engorged when he finally got up, though!

On a tangent with feeding, I've noticed recently that he's started to drop off how much he's been breastfeeding. He's on solids three times a day right now - but not huge portions, and he doesn't always eat them all. I'm just hoping that it's him not needing the frequent feeds (maybe growing out of his reflux?) and not him trying to wean.

Alison - oh so sorry to hear poor little Amelia has another cold. Isn't it awful when they can't even suck their dummy, they love it so much and it brings them so much pleasure and they can't even do that :( I hope she gets better soon. Hang in there, it will be over soon :hug:

Rose - I am soooooooooooooooo happy for you and Liam!!! :dance: Finally you're both getting a better sleep! Maybe its just the solids are messing around with his appetite?

Tilda - Oh you poor thing, why did no one else turn up? Good on you for making the effort :clap: I haven't tried any controlled crying. Usually when I put him down he'll either have a whinge for 5-10 mins (but not crying), or he'll be chatting and messing around for a while. BUT having said that, he has recently had a few episodes of real loud crying when we put him down. He never seems to respond to any sort of cuddling, rocking, etc to sleep (much to my disappointment :() so all I can do is keep going back in to give him his dummy, eventually he will go back to sleep. Maybe I should just try and pick him up once and see what happens? Normally it gets him even more cranky.

BS - wow! Sounds like Eva is really developing! So she gets up on her knees and hands and rocks backwards and forwards? Glad you and your DH had a lovely Fathers Day! Made me start thinkinga bout ours, but thats not till September...still, I shoujld start getting soem ideas! When are you thinking of having your next one?

Kanda - bummer about your lost post! I usually do Cntrl+A then Cntrl+C to copy it all right before I hit submit. That way if it doesn't work, I still have it saved.

Lani - glad Jett has been able to self settle! Has he continued the trend?

Willow & Suz - gosh, what do you dress your bubs in when the egg is blue? Just curious, I do wonder what I should do if it ever gets freezingly freezing!

Hello to anyone I have missed!

AFM- Wish I could say that sleep is great this end. Unfortunately, it has improved from waking every hour, but only slightly. He now wakes about 10pm, then between 2-6am its usually every 40 mins to 1.5 hours. When he wakes at 10pm, he usually self settles, but the other times if I don't go in to him he just ends up waking up and chatting, etc. I don't know what to do. His day sleeps have got worse too...rarely sleeps more than 40 mins at a time. If I try to put him down for his 3rd nap of the day (about 4pm, he can take up to nearly an hour to fall asleep!!!!) so I"ve given up on that sleep for the past couple of days. But all this issue with sleep is really doing my head in :( He used to be such a good sleeper :(

On a positive note, DH took a sickie today (naughty!) and we went to Ikea. Got a bunch of stuff...they did end up having the smock bibs, on special for $5 for a pack of 2!!! And I thought my Target buy was a bargain! So stocked up on those. Also bought one of their highchairs, as they seem to get rave reviews. And a floor mat/quilty thing, and some placemats, and some bibs....and prolly other stuff but i can't remember! I LOVE Ikea!

I think I'm going to call up the local Playgroup this week, to see if I can get Michael in. I know he's a bit young, but it will be good for him still...and I really need to make more friends. Our Mothers Group is beginning to peter out, and I'm worried I'll get really lonely if I don't start getting out and seeing more people.

OH!!! And remember I was saying about DH cousin who's having IVF?? Well, she got a positive!!!! On her first go!!!! Its early days yet, obviously, but thats got to be good getting a positive!

DH mum is not doing so well. She has gone back to being Neutropenic (no immune system), which is bad in itself - Michael can't see her as he has just had his needles. But she has developed an ulcer on her tongue, which is not healing itself. DH got a call from his dad to call and ambulance for his mum this morning as she was having trouble swallowing and breathing. turned out to be a false alarm, but its pretty scary. She had another bone marrow test last week and we get the results of those on Thursday.

Well as for us, I am completely over it! Harry's coming down with another cold, or maybe it's the same one just round 2? Last night he was having floor play and all of a sudden he just started crying and was quite upset for an hour or so, had a bit of a sleep on me woke up cranky again and wasn't realyy moving his right arm. I think he may have hurt it somehow while he was rolling around, or maybe he strained something else that's effecting his arm, I'm not sure. He had a bath and was a bit better and is a bit better again today but still not right so we're getting it looked at tomorrow morning.
Also I lost my purse Grrrr!!!!!!!!! So that means cancelling everything and getting new stuff, but I pics of the boys in there and I'm not sure if I have copies of a couple of them from when the boys were little:( my own fault I guess. I think my purse got thrown out with the maccas rubbish last week, MIL trying to help(I wish she wouldn't!) Not her fault I guess, I would have put it in one of the bags to carry it in from the car, seeing as I use a baby bag now I don't bother taking it on trips like that and just carry my purse, won't do that again!
Harry's been grumpy and distractible today and I just spent 2 1/2 hrs getting him to sleep, put him to bed then MIL comes in and ILs have to have a discussion in the laundry right next to his room whilst banging the door and he was awake again before I even got out of the room. Seriously I have never met adults that are as ignorant as them! Then if I was to say anything to them MIL ends up in tears apologising, then the next day she does it all over again, I just don't know how to get through to them??!! They can make all the noise they want just not right near his room or outside his door FFS!!!
Better go now and deal with Mr Squirmy on my lap, sorry to complain but I'm really over it.

Rose! Wooooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Seriously, I feel like Eva and Liam are so similar! She changed so much when she moved to her room! I am so happy for you - trust me you'll get used to sleeping through soon enough! :) You're going to feel like a new woman soon! I am really so happy for you!

Tilda, sucks about that mother's group...I don't think it is wrong to feed to sleep - I never did but recently Eva tuckers herself out so much that she generally ends up asleep at the end of her last feed...Do what is good for her. At the same time, I do the self settling and it works fine, she has only whined a bit like Michael and once the dummy is back in she just settles back down...But she is a belly sleeper which makes a HUGE difference - my friend's baby has started rolling over to belly sleep and now sleeps straight from 7-830AM! she actually has to wake her up in the morning to drop her off at daycare since she started belly sleep...have you tried that with Matilda? Again, you can try for a nap and see what happens...They are pretty strong now so it should not be a prob.

Alison, your poor baby :( Eva is also blocked up and has to be settled to sleep lately, but I suction her nose with the physio serum before bed every night or else she also wakes up constantly not being able to breathe...I also noticed that she is slightly more comfy in a slight seated position and the first few days when the cold was worse I put her in bed with a little pillow to prop her up (not at night but for naps...) and found that she slept and breathed better, maybe try that? Sending out get well vibes to her!

Beany, I think Michael is just going through the difficult 6 month sleep thing. Eva is on and off since hitting 6 months too, she seems to be settling back in now, but she def has way less sleep period now - She has two little naps max during the day and plays constantly - they are getting bigger! I hope MIL gets better :( It must be so hard for you guys to see her not well and so hard for her not to see Michael...you guys should skype with her so she can see him on video - I do that with my fam in NYC.

Willow, :( It is so annoying sometimes when you have people all in your space and you just need to keep your baby in a controlled environment! And some people just don't get it! They forget everything five minutes after you tell them...How much longer do you have before you're in your own place? Just take a breath and count down, you're almost there!!!! Put a sign up on the door of the laundry saying "Don't forget Harry is next door :) " or something - maybe that will help them remember without you having to get angry?

AFM, just booked a ticket to NYC - my mother called complaining that she can't take it anymore - not seeing Eva, that is! So we will be in NYC from the 1st - 10th of July then we get back and leave for the south of france on the 15-31st! I can't wait!!! NYC for shopping and all of my favorite beauty salons and hair salons then vacation in the sun! yay!

I need to get all of the logistics in order for the trips, but once I organize everything it should be great.

Eva is still going strong up on all fours and is reversing while up on her knees, she advances a bit but nothing that seems to be on purpose, but she is figuring it out! There is a little vid on fb of her bouncing up and down on her knees...that was last week so she is doing it A LOT more now!

I am also going today to buy her a bunch of new toys - she is ready for more lights and buttons and I will donate her baby toys to the daycare :)

Hi Girls, sorry this will be quick as I have a grumpy cold ridden baby on my hands! I'm so friggin exhausted right now. Thanks for all your tips, I'm trying all of them and there's not much else I can do, already tried the elevated mattress, doing the vaporizer, the suction thing (which she absolutely hates and upsets her which makes her nose worse when she cries) - I swear I'm going to poke her brains out cause she moves at the wrong time. Anyway, I just have to ride it out, no sleep for me for a while I fear.

Hi Tilda - until about 4 weeks ago Amelia was still being rocked and cuddled to sleep, to teach her to self settle I was dreading it but it was much easier than I thought and it only took a week and she was doing it on her own. I just put her down - on her tummy as that's her comfiest position and pat her bum and say shhhhhh shhhh until she'd fall asleep - at first she fought it so I just kept at it and I also use the dummy but you don't have to do that, it was quite frustrating at times and at the start was taking me up to an hour but by the 4th/5th day I was down to about 5/10 minutes and then eventually I'd just put her down pat her bum and say goodnight etc and walk out with her just having her music softly in the background and her cot mobile or aquarium thing on. Give it a go and persevere, it's worth it believe me, she will do it. I thought it was impossible as well but it's not. Good luck.

Beany it must have been the day for ikea cause I went today too. How exciting for DH's cousin positive first round I've is fantastic I hope all goes smoothly for her. Not so good for his mum. Fingers crossed all is ok.

Alison poor little ameila. Try putting some vicks on the soles of her feet then putting socks on before bed. Jett had a runny nose a few weeks back and after one night was heaps better and only a few nights all cleared up.

AFM we went to ikea today n got some bibs too also some cups and toy boxes. Also got some great bargains in target for myself. Jett has been a little better I still seem to be up twice for a feed during the night. I normally give last feed about 9pm then he is awake about 1am and again at 5am. I feed him, do u think I should be???
The self settling is going ok he has done it a few times now or with just a little patting or yesterday we were out and it was just a little rocking of the pram. I have noticed a great improvement.

Jett is 6mths old today. Wow the time has flown. We had a cake for him tonight at the IL's.

I had told my work that I would be returning at the start of August. Thinking about it makes me sick. I don't know what to do :( I would love to never go back but I have to at some stage. Argh

Hi Beany - sorry I totally missed your note about DH's cousin, that is so fantastic, I love hearing stories like that, brings a smile to my face. As for Michael's waking, is it his teeth or part of the wonder week perhaps? The wonder week can go up to around 32 weeks so maybe that's his thing. Hope it improves soon. As for mums group, what a shame about yours, ours is still going strong, only 2 girls dropped out and one of them was because she's pregnant again and is finding a 6 month old and morning sickness a bit difficult to juggle, go figure lol! Pity you don't live my way as you'd love our group, we have a great chat every week and are going to create a playgroup soon with just us.

Hi Lani - thanks heaps for the tip on Vicks on the feet, haven't heard that one so will def give it a go. Happy 6 months to Jett for yesterday too, how time flies huh.

AFM - well miracles of all miracles Amelia slept through the whole night last night! I went in to check on her once and she was up the other end of the cot so I just moved her back and she stayed there until 6.30 am! Her nose was clear and she was breathing through it no problems. I got so excited as she looked and sounded back to normal....but since being up her nose has gone all snotty again. She won't let me near her with the suction thing though. I'm a bit bummed as I thought it had gone but perhaps she's on the mend at least. I'm not going swimming today though, thought it best if I avoided that today, shame as she loves it but don't want her catching a chill or passing it onto the other bubs. I feel worse today, think the lack of sleep this week has caught up on me and I have a feeling I might be getting her cold, my throat is a bit sore and my nose feels a bit funny but I don't care, as long as she's better, I can take stuff for it at least! Last night I elevated her mattress a bit more and doubled the dose of the vicks in the vaporizer, my friend said to only use 1 capful not the recommended 2.5 but her room is quite big so I did what it says on the bottle and obviously that made a difference. I also put her in the bathroom when I had a shower last night so she could get the steam. Will be doing all these things again today that's for sure. But, I'm just glad she's on the mend, I really don't fair well with a sick baby, not sure if I'm just pathetic or if it's normal but I hope I get better as I've got many more years of things like this and worse to come I'm sure.

Oh and for those using disposables, I usually use the Huggies but I bought a packet of the Coles brand - they have the Snugglepot and Cuddlepies all over them, I am finding them really really good and they're cheaper than Huggies, good for a backup anyway. I will still mainly use Huggies, especially at night as they have the "girls" and "boys" ones so I find overnight contain more whereas the others are unisex but if you're looking for a cheaper alternative but still a good nappy give them a go.

Poor Jett! Glad you have the number 2's sorted. I've been meaning to go to Ikea too! Bit of a drive for me from Canberra :) Yay for Jett for self settling! Ryan gets like that too. He'll get really grumpy and demand his dinner, then bath, then feed and only calms down once I put him in his cot.


Alison - Glad you had a nice birthday. Sorry to hear Millie's got another cold, poor bunny :(

Kawa - You're closer to me than the Sydney girls are. Our Van's near Ulladulla, next time we're there I can drive back home through the highlands and drop in on you at a market.

Willow - Bummer about losing your purse, I hate having to cancel and replace everything. Sounds like you could use a break from the ILs. Is your MIL menopausal? She sounds a bit hormonal. Lucky we were away for the weekend, looks like we missed the -5 morning the other day! Absolutely we should get the chubbas together, but after your reno has finished and things have settled down a bit for you :)

BS - Wow, Eva is doing so well! You sound like you've gotten back in to working with out too much drama, but it is hard to get motivated isn't it? I'm so jealous of your trip to NYC and then the South of France! And you will look fabulous! Here I am planning a ski trip, no swimwear here :) I love the Skype idea and we should have a Skype BB meetup.

Beany - That sucks about the Mother's Group not being there. My Mum's Group from Craig is still meeting after nearly 3 years, but I think we're pretty rare. Most seem to fizzle out quickly or when everyone goes back to work. Playgroup is a great idea, I'm thinking about joining one too. Hope Michael's sleep improves soon. Sorry to hear about you MIL, perhaps you can Skype like BS suggested, so she still gets to see Michael? Great news about your cousin's BFP!

Tilda - No real poo issues here. Ryan really hates soiled nappies now that his poos are solid, but he still poos a couple of times a day. You could try mixing the prune juice in with the food. You could also try baby yoghurt or natural yoghurt if you're not worried about cow's milk allergies. We haven't introduced meat yet, but might in the next few days.

Rose - That's so fantastic about Liam's sleep! :dance: You'll really benefit from the extra deep sleep you're getting. Our pram has a bassinette which we only used a couple of times because I often had to put Craig in the pram and carry Ryan in the sling. So Ryan has faced forwards nearly his whole life, but he has Craig to keep him company. Craig was a curious baby and wanted to see out, so we had him facing forwards early too. I guess all bubs are different. My workmate has a bub 2 weeks younger than Ryan and they sold their Phil & Ted's Dash and bought the same pram as Alison (can't remember the name) so he could rear face as he was always crying facing forwards. Do whatever works for as long as you need to.

Carmey - Hope Jack's back to sleeping through soon. I loved SATC2, thought it was hilarious! But they could have done cartwheels as you said and I would have laughed my head off. How did Jack go without the wrap?

AFM - It was a nice trip away. Hectic, now that my whole day is taken up with baby food and feeding. Ryan did well with his needles, but woke for night feeds while we were away for the first time in ages. I really need to catch up on housework, so I think that's the job for today.

Question for you all, and a TMI warning. Does DTD still hurt for any of you girls? Does it get better? DH and I have only managed to DTD twice since having Ryan and both times it has hurt, to the point of not being enjoyable. I haven't been avoiding DTD, DH has either had broken ribs or falls asleep early so although I would have liked some intimacy I've left it up to him. From what I can work out, he's been feeling unattractive because of his weight and stressed from running his business. And now that his ribs are healed, he's been away every weekend for the last month! It took a weekend away to get us back in the sack and now I'm worried it's going to hurt everytime.

Hi Suzi MIL is not menopausal she just doesn't listen, even when she asks a question she just doesn't seem to listen to the whole answer, and she takes everything the wrong way and gets upset, if she would just listen things would be a lot easier. Even when she tells us things that someone else has said or done, when you talk to them you get a different story, it's not that she lies, she just doesn't listen then says what she thinks is the rest of the story or what she wants to hear, and is a great one for exaggerating things Grrrrr. DP says she was a nightmare when she was going through menopause! (before my time, so glad I missed that lol)

Alison - I hav eno idea whether its teeth or WW still or what. I just want it to stop already. I long for the times we used to just put him down at night, he'd be out like a light and not wake up till 4.30am, then sleep till 6.30am. Yet again, last night it was 10pm, then 2am, then 3.30am then 5am then 5.50am. Ughhh. Haha, I wish I lived your way, that would be so great! I'm happy that your MG has worked out so well :) How is Amelia today? Any better? I can't believe she slept so well last night!! Maybe its on its way out?

Lani - I know how you feel about going back to work. I really don't want to :( I'm gonna miss him so much, I'll be in tears at work, I know it. I've said September, depending on whether we can get childcare...are you putting Jett in childcare? When he wakes at 1am and 5am, have you tried just resettling without a feed? Might be worth a shot?

Suz - Sounds like you had a great time away! Glad the needles went ok...I have to say this time around it was as though he didn't even have them. No reaction at all! (I mean, he cried the place down, of course, but afterwards I mean...) And to answer your TMI question....Lordy, yes does it still hurt!!! We don't do it often at all, prolly count on one hand how many times we have since Michael was born. It really really hurts and I don't enjoy it at all. I dunno whether to see a doc or what, its a bit embarrasing. Do you remember it being like that when you had Craig?

AFM - not much to report. Had another rubbish night. Tho he did sleep for 1.5 hours this morning, and managed to resettle him after his 40min lunch nap. Pffft...so much for sleeping better once they start solids!! What a load of crapola!

How much water is everyone giving their bubs? Anyone noticed a decrease in intake of formula/milk? It seems I am forever feeding him, I thought he might slow down in one of the departments but not at all!

Following on from the recent poo discussion, thought I'd add my bit....his poos are a lot harder than they used to be, and orange (he's only had orange solids so far, plus rice cereal). And he's going usually at least once a day, but sometimes its only a little blob. And he really really strains for it too...he's usually sitting in his bumbo during a solids feed and he starts grunting and squirming and going red. Incredibly cute and I can't help but laugh! I'm worried he's not getting enough water, so started giving him more today.

Alison, I am glad that Amelia had a good night - I am sure the rest will help her fight the germies...Eva is also clogged up all the time, but she sleeps through it...But the first few days of each cold are the worse...keep doing what you're doing, sounds like it helped to up the dose...

Lani, I woul dtry to resettled without picking him up, at least fior that first waking...Eva used to wake up also before she dropped her night feeds and picking her up out of bed was what made her want a feed...Does he take a dummy? With her I would just pop it back in and she would go back down. At this stage if you go by the book he does not "need" a night feed. But who cares about books, do what he needs, but it is worth trying...He might just bne getting up out of habit...Going back to work seems awful and you girls remember how emotional I was about it, but finally it is nice to get out of the house, do your stuff, know that your baby is ok with people who take good care of him...We are on baby sched so every day depends on them...when you get back to work, you have more of a sched...he will also be more tired and stimulated...Since starting daycare Eva "talks" more and she was already a chatterbox! She has also become physically more advanced fast and I see her squirming around to touch other babies, grab toys etc...she has also become super easy with strangers and goes to her carers with no complaining or crying...I am happy she is in there and honestly, even if I did not work, I would leave her in there for half days - that is how much I feel it is good for her to socialize and be out and not be so dependent on me (which at the moment she is and super attached! DH is blown away by how much she just stares at me and want me in her line of vision all the time!)...Saying that though, I could NEVER be working full time right now. I work the 9-3 which is very light...because I need to see her and I am so happy picking her up every day - I skip into that school every day to get my baby! So don't worry Lani, even if you do go back, you will be fine, and he will have a lot more alert time! Eva has her two naps in daycare so I still get a solid 3/4 hours with her in the eve and 2 hours in the morning and weekends...so I am happy with that, since I know she spends her days napping and playing with other babies, which she loves and I cannot offer her at home. If you need any advice or have questions, don't hesitate to ask (same for Beany)

Beany, yes she is down to two sleeps. She is up around 530/6 for food then she hangs out with us while we have breakfast together, usually poos lol, then I go dress and change her while DH showers and dresses, then he plays with her while I get ready then off to daycare. She usually goes down for a little morning nap, then gets up for veggies and bottle, then usually naps a bigger nap in the afternoon...She is usually up around 3 again for food and I pick her up around 330/4 (4 when I go work out right after work). Then at home she plays and hangs out with me then food then bath around 6ish then she goes down around 730/8, and all over again! I noticed that on WE she naps more, prob because she is less stimulated at home since there are not 15 other babies cramling around! Daycare has really given her days a lot of structure...I am glad his needles went well...He is becoming a big boy :)

Suz, it hurt for me the first few times (like the first 6 times or so I would say) and it will get better..try lubrication, it helps...DH and I have sex now about three times a week or so, which is way less than before (I used to be a once a day girl on a reg day), but it stopped hurting a while a go...I think it is just a question of using the equipment :ROFL: Introducing meat! Wow, Eva is still on and off...she has days when she opens wide now and days where she purses her lips shut...At daycare they crack up with her because they say when she doesn't want anything, nothing can get in there! She just purses her lips shut and does not budge :) - I hope her stubborness helps her refuse advances from stupid boys later in life! lol

Willow, just count down - you're almost done with the work - The personality type you're describing is def hard to deal with - BIL is like that - he hear the beginning and invents the rest but he is so super nice that I don't get mad at him - he is also 21 so easier to forgive.

Hi Beany - I have to admit I just dropped the 3rd nap to see how it would go. One of the books I have says that you can start to drop the nap around 6 months so I thought I'd try and it worked no problems, was a bit hard the first few days as I had to keep her amused to keep her awake but she manages it on her own now. I have found (aside from having this cold) she is sleeping much better since dropping the 3rd nap, both day and night. Why don't you give it a try? This is my routine if you want to know her sleeping patterns:

Up at 7.00 am, down for a nap at 9.00/9.30 (she's usually awake from around 6.30 am but just talks and plays with her teddy in her cot) - depending on her mood, up at around 11.00 and then down around 1.30 pm (she has milk and solids in between these sleeps), then she's up around 3.00/3.30 pm, has another bottle, then dinner (solids) at 5.30 pm and then bath around 6.00 pm and last bottle around 6.30 pm - bed by 7.00 pm. I'm not strict on these times but it's always around these times.

Amelia is taking less milk generally, although she was worse a week or two ago when the tooth was coming through/wonder week, she's finishing all but about 40 mls on her bottles and in the morning I use the rest of the milk to make up her cereal. She's also been on orange solids until yesterday when I bought some fresh peas, boiled, peeled and bamixed the peas - I added it to her pumpkin/potato mix, you can't see the green but it's in there and she eats it. I tried her on plain baby yoghurt at lunch today but she wasn't too keen, will try again in a day or two. For breakfast I buy the Rafferty's cereals, she has rice cereal and I add pear or apple, or she has the one with banana already in or the one in the orange packet with apricot and banana, she loves all of them! As for poo's, definitely more solid and what goes in comes out lol....but, she has been going 2 or 3 times a day the last week,WTF!!!!! ha ha. Banana chocks her up so I don't give her the cereal with that in it every day. I don't give her a lot of water, have been trying with this cold but she hasn't been as keen as normal, I just offer it to her in a sippy cup every now and then, not sure how much she's actually drinking as opposed to dribbling down her chin! Anyway, hope that has helped you a little. Oh and by the way those times you mentioned he is waking are what they call classic "waking" times for babies. Next time we catch up I'll bring my Baby Bliss book and you can borrow it, it explains all that and how to deal with it.

As for her cold, she's definitely better today, sleeping last night helped I think, she's still a bit snotty and blocked but not as bad as previous days and you can see in her face she feels better. She had 1.5 hour nap this morning and has now been asleep for another 1.5 hrs so I expect her to wake soon. I can't wait until she's 100%, I feel so bad for her when she's ill poor thing. Their little noses go all red and crusty and just the sound of it being so blocked up and gross, I just wish she could blow it! I have a feeling I'm getting it now, bit of a funny nose and sore throat but I don't care, as long as she's well. Honestly, last year I didn't get sick once, this year has been terrible so far for sickness!

Hi Suz - it hurt for me the first few times as well but not anymore. I have to admit though TMI I'm finding tampons are still uncomfy, it's almost like it's gripping or something, does that sound weird? It hurts to walk like it's in wrong lol. Oh well, not sure what that's all about.

Hope everyone's having a great day. I'm brewing pumpkin soup in the slow cooker again, the first time I made it was so yummy even DH wouldn't stop going on about it. I made it last week with a diff pumpkin (I used butternut the first time) and it didn't taste anywhere near as nice so doing it the original way again today. Never mess with a recipe that works huh! Well, best go, got a couple of things to do before Missy Moo wakes.

Alison, speaking of the sippy cup, it is funny but eva hates watter in a bottle but loves, loves, loves cups. especially with no tops, so I give her from uncovered cups then she serves herself from a sippy (and most of her clothes get served too!). In the recent heat she has been complaining for water...I tried giving her bottles a few times thinking she was hungry and she would not take them but bring out the sippy and she was drinking away. She has been eating a lot less in the heat or taking more frequent small bottles...

this is going to be a selfish me post.

I am having a really bad day. I am exhausted and really upset. Jett has been a bugger. He has slept 30mins in total today. 10mins in the car on the way to the shops and 20mins on the way home. He has had 8feeds today too. I am not getting any help from DH either. All he says is if he would take a bottle I could help. He wont change nappies, burp, bath, dress or put him to sleep. I can't stop crying and don't know what else I can do.

Sorry girls I need some advice.

Lani omg:hug::hug::hug: ...DH needs to pull his head in!!!! I wish I was near you I could give you a hand! Have you asked him to help with nappies etc?? There's so much he could do to help...maybe he could take him for a drive give you a break? If you feed him so you know he's not hungry then DH could go for a drive, he might even go to sleep again he seems to sleep in the car. I think you'd feel a lot better if you could get a half hour even an hour break!

Is 8 feeds a lot for him? He could be having a growth spurt, or it could be the dreaded wonder week either way it will pass soon handg in there. Do you have a freind or rellie that can give you even a little break tomorrow if DH won't man up? Even if some one takes him for a little walk in the pram just to give you time to breathe, it feels like it's all too hard sometimes I understand how draining it is :hug::hug::hug:

Lani, can't you call a parent to come stay with Jett and just leave the house? Call someone to take over and get out of there for a few hours! DH is an ass for not helping...Is it night time there? He won't take anything from a bottle? What the hell is up with DH? Has he never done that stuff or is he just being difficult? Maybe go have a hot bath once you have given Jett a feed and change? Lock the door and don't come out until you feel ok. We're here for you :(

Is Jett asleep? If not then maybe you can do what Willow says and just take him for a drive, that should calm him and you...I would go check into a hotel for the night just to teach DH a lesson. Or go crash somewhere with someone who makes you feel safe...Sometimes just getting out helps. Maybe go for a walk with Jett in the pram for a bit? Or is it scary? Or cold?

If Jett is asleep try a hot shower. I always find that helps. You can just cry it out in there. I don't know what to tell you...DH needs to do something. If Jett is asleep, and you know he'll stay down for an hour or two just go get ready, and when you walk out tell DH I'm going out for a bit. Watch Jett. Then go out for a drive. If you don't force DH to step up, he won't...

And I am sure a friend would help you out. I watch my friend's baby often overnight (she takes a bottle though) and she does the same for me when DH and I need a night out. Real friends won't hesitate to help Lani - call someone...

Oh how I crave a night off. In 6mths I have left Jett with my mum for 3hrs when we went to the movies. That is my only time off and that was when he was 8wks old.

I really need to get him to take a bottle as this is not healthy for me. I am so down and am thinking very negatively about motherhood.

Oh Lani I wasn't logged on last night I'm so sorry, did you get some sleep last night beautiful? I wish I had've logged on, we could've chatted, I was up most of the night with Amelia again, this darn cold, I thought it was going as she slept all night the previous but no, she's blocked up again and now has a cough. Anyway, this isn't about me. How are you today? I think DH needs to step up mate, no offence but he sounds like he's being horrible and that is not what being a father is all about. Bottle or no bottle, he can still help by taking him off your hands so you can have a nice bath or something, that's what I do - I go and have a 30 minute bath and just read or chill, it does wonders for the battered soul I tell you. Also, your friends wouldn't mind, well, I know I wouldn't, that's what friends are for, to help out in times of need, there must be someone you know you can rely on, even just to chat to no matter what time of the night it is. I think you need to tell DH how you're feeling, you shouldn't be doing this alone, you're in it together!

As for weaning off the breast, not sure what to tell you because obviously Amelia has been on the bottle for a while now, one of my friends from mums group has the same issue as you. Her baby who is nearly 8 months old will not take a bottle, never has so she can't go anywhere or do anything on her own either. She's tried everything. One thing she will take is a sippy cup, have you tried expressing into a sippy cup? You could even try formula as maybe it will fill him up more. My friend's bub won't take formula so she's still feeding every couple of hours and once or twice through the night too. She too felt like you did at one point but luckily with our support and her DH's support she got through it and is feeling ok with it now. She looked at it this way, at 12 months food becomes their main source so she is hoping weaning off the boob will be much easier as they don't need/want the milk so much then. She is currently in Melbourne (that's where she's from originally) visiting family but I'll send her an FB message and ask her if she has any advice and other tips for you as she seems much much happier these days so maybe she's worked out a way around it. In fact, I don't remember seeing her BF at mums group lately so that might be a good sign!

:hug: I'm sorry I didn't see your post until today. I hope you got some more sleep last night and that DH is being more helpful. My DH is the same, he won't do anything unless I ask. We shouldn't have to ask. For some reason men seem to think that because we're the ones with the boobs that there's nothing they can do for our babies!

Any chance you can do what the girls suggested and leave Jett with someone for an hour or two? Even if you feed Jett, then tell DH he's in charge of nappies etc. while you run a bath and relax. You need a chance to recharge.

Weaning can be done quickly or slowly. You can wean to formula and the bottle, or expressing and the bottle. BS, Alison and Beany probably have the most experience with this. I was NEVER able to get Craig to take a bottle, so I had to wean him slowly. Solids was the key. I offered solids at least an hour after a BF. Keep offering the spoon until your bub refuses to eat anymore. We ended up with a routine a lot like the one Alison posted with 4 - 5 BFs each day. When Craig was 9 months old, the MACH nurses got me to start offering the BF straight after food, which moved it down to 3 BFs. Then I swapped the lunch BF for a cup of water, then the same for Breakfast and finally the bedtime feed for a cup of cows milk (he was 11 months old by this stage).

Something I was considering trying with Ryan, was to replace the bedtime feed every night with a bottle and expressed milk. My plan was to get DH to give him the bottle. But I read online that a baby only needs to do bottle feeds a couple of times a week to keep their 'bottle skills' up, so I decided not to replace it full-time. Plus, I have a friend who tried to replace a feed or two with a bottle and her boy started refusing the breast and completely weaned himself. I'm not ready for that!

To get Ryan to take the bottle, I waited until 1/2 hour before his last feed was due, so he wasn't starving. I tried several different positions, including him in his highchair facing me. You can try leaving the room and giving the bottle to DH. Be patient, it was 45 minutes before Ryan drank the bottle. He was starting to get sleepy, so it became like a 'dream-feed'.

Don't worry if Jett won't take a bottle, that doesn't mean you can't leave him with someone. It sounds cruel, but he will survive missing a BF. When I went to SATC2, DH had a bottle ready for Ryan but he decided to fall asleep, so DH put him in his cot and he woke up when I got home (and I fed him then). I agree with Suzi one that, as mean as it sounds at their age they can be distracted for a while before they're desperate for a feed. If you know he's been fed well before you leave him with someone (DH, man up!) he will be ok if he's amused while you're gone. I think at this point even an hour or two of me time will do you wonders!

Alison was right too this is only for a short time, I know it doesn't feel like it now (I'm feeling the same) but in a few months the boob will be a little less of the top priority for them. It is really hard at times but it will get better. :hug:

I wish DH would help you more! Well last night he said "what can I do?" I think it's time you told him exactly what he can do and then make him do it! Is he nervous or not confident being alone with Jett? He needs to just do it and get over it, he'll be ok once he knows he can do it.

I have to go Harry just won't sleep either I'm still in my pyjamas and I've got carpet layers coming at 12pm to measure up, I haven't eaten yet either so I might have to put him in the ergo and see if I can eat and tidy up a little before the carpet guys get here they need to measure some of the rooms we're living in ow and I've got no idea how they're going to do it cos there's crap everywhere!! DP told me last night that they were coming so no time to attempt a tidy up grrrrr.

Oh Lani, I'm sorry to hear your having a rough time atm :hug: I think you really need to sit down and have a heart-to-heart with your DH, explain to him that you need a break every now and then, you're tired and you'd love him to help out a bit more. And, even just an hour a day will work wonders. Raising a baby is a 2 person job, you need to share the responsibility and it really sounds like he's not pulling his weight. You're not asking much. I did a similar thing, I said to him that I need a break, I need some 'me time' and that I'd like him to look after Michael for a few hours over a weekend, to give me chance to either do things around the house, or go shopping. It works out quite well as he usually takes him to see his parents while I do whatever I like! I'm afraid I can't really help with the weaning advice, Michael went to bottle when he was only 2 weeks old :cry:, he was that starving by then that he guzzled it down, he didn't care that it was from a bottle. But I think Suz has given you some great tips there.

Alison - I'm aiming to get Michael's routine exactly the same as yours. Its kind of heading that way. I think the key is to get him to sleep a bit later in the morning, which pushes out each of his sleeps, eliminating the need for that 3rd one. That happened yesterday, tho there was hell to pay late arvy as he was cranky as. But that might have been cos I kept him home and maybe he got a bit bored. oooh, never thought of doing peas. Thats an idea. Tho it will totally gross me out making it...I HATE peas with vengeance! How'd your pumpkin soup go?

BS - that video of Eva trying to crawl is fantastic!! She's gonna be zooming around before you know it! Then we're on to the next scary stage!

AFM - not much to tell. Another night of waking every hour (at least) from midnight onwards - feel so tired and headachey today :( But on the positive side, I did manage to push him out to a 7am get-up. I dont' know what the heck I'm doing wrong here, why is he still like this?? :(

Rang the playgroup leader yesterday, she seemed nice over the phone. But I get the impression that it was originally a mothers group 4.5 years ago who have formed a playgroup, and now most of them have 2 kids. so I think I might be the only one with one. I thought it odd that she said something like "just come down for a trial and see how you go. I remember I was a bit overwhelmed when I was around older mums and babies when I had my first"...sooo...I dunno if she's hinting that I won't like it or what. But I'm beginning to think that way. I dunno, I guess I'll go next week and see how it goes.
