"she should be crawling by now" is ridiculous, and i'd be wanting a second opinion.
I agree that floor time is great and probably better than her being upright as much, but theres no hard and fast dates, you dont fail crawling becuase you havent done it by 8 months.
Your also doing you best to keep her safe, and that cant just be dismissed either. Its very hard to chase after them, and thats with a partner at home - I really dont know how you do it on your own and I think it takes something special to be able to.
My older son didnt even sit unsupported til 9 months (MCHN was slightly concerned about this one and said we'd give it a month beofre getting worried - he sat the next day), and didnt crawl til 11 months.
It is very important that they crawl at some stage (some kids will go straight to walking in which case its often advised to teach them to crawl) but i think your health nurse is talking out of her bottom.
If you can find a safe way to give her more floor timet hen thats what I would advise.
We limit DS' time in his exersaucer to 10-15mins at a time.
I do know one baby who had problems with leg development (bone & muscle) from being in a walker to much, but that was nothing like you had described - this kid was in a walker every waking hour.
EM Sope isn't crawling yet - she "swims" and does the "turtle" but isn't crawling.
Question for all - Sophia is off being "fed" (like Tom) and I can do breakfast and dinner but what are you doing for lunch? When they are on mush lunch was a main meal but now she has a sandwich a couple of bits of fruit (today a nectarine andhalf a tinned pear) and maybe some yoghurt (but not today for eg). Some days she'll have left over veg but I can't remember when lunch became lunch as we know it and not "dinner" IYKWIM.
Crawling isn't really a milestone as such - they don't *have* to crawl, and if they don't master it, it doesn't indicate any major issue. Two hours a day is a long time for a baby to be in anything - but hey, you do what you've got to do, and Tom probably spends that much time all up in his high chair while we eat, watching me cook, etc.
One thing that can happen with kids who've never crawled is that they can have issues later on with some motor skills. But there are physio things you can do if that's the case, and really, what can you do - *make* them crawl? You can't make a baby do anything they don't want to do!!
Nelly, re food at lunch time, I just do sandwiches, yoghurt and a variety of pieces of fruit - basically what me and dh have for lunch. Sometimes he has crackers and cheese. He doesn't eat a *lot* of food though. I got told off at the MCHN today for breastfeeding him "too much". (He has between six and eight breastfeeds a day, probably about 800ml milk, since I usually pump about 180ml a session at work.)
Here's an average to good day of food for him:
- Breakfast: 1 weetbix with cow's milk, a quarter piece of toast and vegemite.
- Morning snack: a small handful of sultanas, or a digestive biscuit
- Lunch: Small sandwich with whatever on it, a couple of little pieces of cheese, a selection of fruit pieces
- Afternoon snack: fruit and/or yoghurt, or a cracker
- Dinner: tbspn meat (he loves fish and chicken and sausages), mouthfuls of whatever vegies we are having, and he particularly loves potatoes. He likes to eat beans
I'm finding that just offering him lots of different food types during the day is the best way of getting enough into him. I didn't offer him his usual late afternoon breastfeed today, and he ate nearly a whole sausage, two big potato wedges and a mouthful of sweet potato. (Yes, I know, not very healthy, but we had a bbq and that's all there was that he could eat. It's better than Clare, who just had a Weetbix for dinner!)
i had a job interview this afternoon.
Im not sure how it went. the job description was clearly not what Ive done inthe past, but related to it. They would have known this before interviewing me but I didnt as they provided the JD, which sounded exactly like a prior job iv done, when in fact its pretty different.
I think it went OK, we were talking for well over an hour, and not just me rambling on. The interviewer ended it by saying thanks for a great interview and made it clear when Id hear something back as to whether I will have a second interview or not etc.
Im more nervous now than before the interview, its a big step up in terms of $ too, which we really need at the moment. On the other hand there are some good opportunities at my current job that Id be sad to miss, if only they would pay me more..
she said i should hear whther i have a second interview by nex week at the latest.
Im doubtfu, i feel sick to the stomacht he more i think abot it - i wasnt this nervous before the interview.
When I applied for my current job I was faily confident from the first interview, but time its very different. It didnt go badly, but Im just not sure
If it is any reassurance, I left the last interview I did absolutely sure I wouldn't get the job. I didn't have the specific experience they wanted, and no tertiary qualifications. And they offered me the job! I was totally not expecting it.
Pandora - Best of luck with the job.....and the second interview!
Regarding crawling: of my 4 kiddie winks - my first didn't crawl, he went from commando to walking......now 11 years old - absolutely no problems with motor skills - highly intelligent etc......sometimes failure to crawl is no sign of any problems. DS1 just had a big head, and was disproportionate which made it difficult to crawl. Tat - Reuben has only just started to crawl in the last week, and I thought that was early. don't let them worry you too much.
xx
Ive been thinking about the job stuff over the weekend, and Ive decided Im calling the recruiter tomorrow and telling him I dont want to proceed in the interview process.
How does this sound ??
Its difficult as its a large pay rise if i got it, and we need the $, but things are picking up at work, i just got some really good feeedback from my manager, and Im being sent on a really good training course in March that will enable me to get some industry (IT) certification..Im just not sure Im ready to pass it up..:
'On reflection the difference in the actual job compared with how it was advertised is a lot, and i dont think its the dierction I want to go in'
Pandora: Good luck with making your decision, it is difficult especially when the $$ are involved. But as you said your work is picking up, so maybe its better the devil you know than the one you don't.
Well Jack is well and truely crawling now, pulling himself up on everything and everyone. It is great that he is moving as he is more content, but it is so much more work. We live in an old farm house and lots of bugs get in through all the well sealed doors and windows (not) so I'm constantly trying to be one step ahead of him to prevent his diet becoming one full on insects.
Jack has just cut 2 more teeth, he has 4 teeth on the bottom and 2 top teeth (with another 2 just about to arrive) he seems to teeth without too much complaint which is handy.
Oh and my darling son has learnt how to squeal, he will be in the highchair and if he wants something or someone he lets you know it. Not the nicest sound in the world, and my placid son is suddenly becoming very demanding.
Hope everyone else is doing well, and not suffereing too much with lack of sleep and teething.
Pandora, how are you feeling about your decision now?
Megs, you are so right about mobility meaning more hard work! We had to go and buy new dessert bowls last weekend - Tom got into the cupboard in the kitchen and smashed the whole lot on the floor. And wasn't he pleased with himself! He chases the cat, he gets into the pantry, and at church, I spend the whole time chasing him down the aisle because he wants to play with his daddy while he's preaching or reading the gospel!:D:shakehead:
He's just about walking and I'm simultaneously dreading and looking forward to it. At least once he's walking he won't want to crawl through the dirt...
Life has been a bit sucktastic here lately. Nothing serious, we just can't get rid of this gastro bug that has been doing the rounds. Tom had it for ten days, he was really poorly, then Clare had it for a week, and now I've got it. I've got my nieces and nephew visiting this weekend, so I'd better get better in a hurry!!
Still unsure whether it was the right choice or not, and this next one is harder.
Ive got an interview in 90 minutes for a contract role - not ideal - Ive never done one before. Its a LOT (over 50%) more money that I get now, for a similar role to what I have done before.
IT contract roles always pay higher becuase you dont get any leave/super/entitlements on top, and either party can pull out on very short notice. You also are expected to get in and know everything and start right away - which is why I was surprised to get an interview co I can do maybe 70% of the job but none of th rest.
Its been advertised as 10 months + - ongoing and I was told by the recruiter that its very likley to extend or be made permanent.
I love the sound of the job but Id rather have a little payrise and a permanent job if that makes sense?
So I've decided to go ot the interview and see what info I can get from the hiring manager as recruiters are known to lie to get their commission.
DH also had a job interview today but will not find out til next week if he is successful - if he is and I find out in time I definitely will not go for this one.
Oh Gosh look at my selfish post now!
Oscar is getting over Roseola/baby measles so has been not so fun at our place.
Ooh no - he broke all of them? WE have only got saucepands, trays and tupperware in the lower cupboards and drawers at our plce cos we just could not afford to replace anything if it got broken - at least not for a few months til I get my tax return.
Emma - How id Jade going with the crawling? Oscar is still mainly commando crawling and pulling up to standing. Only sometimes he does hands and knees crawling, and then only a few 'steps'
Pandora: she is getting up on all fours and rocking , but mainly going backwards or swiveling in a circle on her belly. we have lino and shes been getting really angry that she keeps slipping (angry word for jade is 'ning' it cracks me up) so we got her some 'teez knees' non slip knee pads which should arrive any day now...
Mchn appt was yesterday. In the last four months Oscar has gained o
only 180g or so - he was up 500 at his last check and then down 300 yesterday. He eats well ans has bf and ff as well as three solids and snacks, so we are going to the paed to see what's going on.
Also potential of extreme hypermobility or hip dysplasia to be checked out as well :(
at least I was able to get in with a pead next week so I don't have to wait five months like I do with my older sons paed.
Oh Pandora sorry to hear about the Paed's appt.
Hoping that it all goes ok and the hip dysplasia doesn't end up being anything.
Quick questions, have his hips only just started showing signs of dysplasia, only reason I'm asking is Jack was given an ultrasound at about 8 weeks as he had extra skin fold in his leg, still has it, so I'm always a bit concerned that there may be something wrong.
Let us know how you get on, I'll be thinking of you
megs - only since he's been pulling up to stand and the sitting again, so about the past 3-4 weeks.
