Babies Born~May 1st-15th 2009 #2

Well hoping it isn't anything too much and that he just has clicky hips or something quite simple.

Has he got over his baby measles ok?

Jacks crawling flat out, pulls himself up and can bob up and down no worries, but has no interest in trying to walk along furniture, coffee tables etc. Not sure if that is normal or if it is because of his hips.

Will keep an eye on it.

My Oscar, is off to Dr, since ear infection about 5 weeks ago he has become very deaf, bit more than selective male hearing now. So I am hoping it isn't glue ear.

Pandora, that's a worry for you. I hope that it is nothing serious, and that the weight drop is just from him becoming mobile. We had issues with dd4 not putting on weight in her first and second years - it took a long time for her to catch up but essentially she's been fine. (They did label it failure to thrive, and she's seen a paediatrician every six months for the last seven years. She was finally discharged last year, even though she's still technically very underweight.)

Megs - thats the thing - they arent clicky at all. Its very strange.
TMTM yeh I hope so. I know I was very thin as a child, maybe thats it.
Hopefully I will find out something soon.

pandora - DD has only put on 300-400g in 4 months

Pandora hope all goes ok w the paed. I haven't had Sophia weighed since her 6mth needles and haven't seen a mchn. To be honest I had such a bum steer with them when Jake was a baby that I have avoided them. Probably should get her checked out though.

Anyone's bubs dropping feeds? Sophia has been lucky to have a day feed, more likely one side around 11 and / or the other at 3ish when she wakes up (on a good day). And the past week or so bed time feeds have been non-existent. To top it off this morning and yday morning were a few quick sucks on my super boob and off she went. My period came back yday so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. then as I was lamenting the non-event of this morning's feed she grabbed her brother's cup of milk and gulped half of it down. Self-weaning?

This might make you chuckle - so AF rears her head after 19 lovely months yesterday and I was very poorly equipped to say the least. I tore every cupboard and drawer apart trying to find a pad or a tampon and all I could find were breast pads - silicone, cotton, disposable - every type under the sun. Finally I found a manky old liner at the bottom of an old handbag to save me for my dash up to the shops. Times like this I miss my husband!

Sophia is still not crawling on all fours. She prefers the commando swim-style and is also pulling herself up and cruising furniture. Poor Jake has had to childproof his spot on the couch where he stashes his treasures now that his sister can reach it all!

Oh and we have got an appt for a second opinion with a genetic metabolic specialist for Jake in April. Feel kind of fraudulent since he hasn't had an episode since December.

Jack is very similar re the feeds, he is only have a morning and night feed and has done for about 6 weeks now. Morning feeds he still very much looks for, but the night feeds are just the couple of sucks and that about it. Cow's milk he has on his weetbix and has started having some with his main meals but it is a bit hit and miss, mostly he sucks it up and then enjoys spitting it all back out again. I think Jack will have pretty much self weaned by 12 months.

Lucky thing only getting your period back now, mine was back when Jack was 6 months, and they have been pretty nasty too.

Good luck with the appt, kids always seem to come good as soon as the appt is made. Better to keep it than cancel and then he has another attack.

Re weight, I haven't had Jack weighed in a good few months, he isn't a big baby by any means and is currently crawling around in size on trackies that keep falling off his waist. I'm thinking he would be around 8.5kg to 9kg, but he hasn't really put on much weight since he started crawling. And my boys are like yours, poor Lewis' train table just isn't anymore as Jack just stands their and pulls the track apart.

Hi to everyone else

Still 4 feeds a day here. Occasionally three. I think he will drop one of the daytime feeds soon becuase when Im b/f they are very short, and he often wont finish a bottle if its a feed when I am wt work ( though he drinks it all at daycare, but not at home..hmm)

jade has feeds at 6am 10am 2pm 6pm and sometimes one overnight but i try offer her water overnight...

Nelly, it would be unusual to self wean at this age, but it is definitely a good age for nursing strikes!

There's something on the kellymom site about nursing strikes (not sure if I'm allowed to link that site here). Basically the advice is - offer when the baby is sleepy or in your experience most likely to accept the breast, offer at other times, too, and put in the odd pumping session to keep your milk supply up in the meantime. Teething can often cause breast refusal at this age, as can boredom and sheer bloody mindedness LOL.

I hope you get some good information with the specialist for Jake - and you, too, Pandora.

Tom started climbing today. We were at netball for Isobel, and there are some metal steps in the stand... and up went Tom! Scared the living daylights out of me. His walking is coming on apace, he can walk across the room now. The reign of terror begins :( I've been kind of sad to see this early entry to toddlerhood. It always strikes me that speech usually hits along with walking, and then that feels like the end of babyhood. It's been a very quick year!

What else is he up to? He's started trying to use a fork and spoon. He can drink out of a mug without a sippy spout although he makes a mess LOL. The sleeping isn't much better - I still have to feed him at 11pm, and then he's up between 2 and 3, and then he's up again at 6.

Feeding is hit and miss. Some days he eats a lot of solid food, other days he just wants boob. And then today, he's had seven feeds already and he hasn't had his last one, and he's eaten everything he can lay his hands on. I suspect a growth spurt! HOpefully that means sleep!!!! He had a really nasty bug the other week with a fever and a green nose, so I think he's catching up after that.

My boy loves eating but doesnt love his high chair and tries to slouch down as far as possible.

We had out GP appt this morning, I said that Id like a paed referrral becuase MCHN had expressed concren about weight gain and my dr looked him up and down and said 'Oh really - its he putting on tto much!' I laughed and said no, FTT, and that I know looking at him it sounds ridiculous ( hes 77.5cm tall and really does look like a tank).
I showed him the growth charts and he agreed with why the MCHN suggested to check him as hes crossed 3 curves, but added that he expects it just to be his normal pattern.
He was also not overly worried about his hips. He did see him do a coupl eof full splits and agreed his is much more flexible that whats "normal" but said that with family history its not surprising and that he doesnt think its anything more than hypermobility.

PAed appointment is tomorrow so we will see what he has to say. I'm actually a bit worried that the growth stuff may be because of my diet, and since AF returned - thats about the time it all went south.

Glad to hear all went well at the Dr's. Hoping you get some answers from the Paed, although he may just be slowing down with his growth.

My second son was a big boy, big at birth and kept going however I was just looking at his book yesterday and noticed that from about 6 months onwards his weight gain really slowed down. So from putting on anywhere up to 800gm a month, it dropped to 200gm.

That being said I don't know what the other factors are for MCHN to be concerned with FTT.

As far as I know, failure to thrive is more than just weight - it's failing to thrive in all ways. The baby will be unwell, perhaps ill-looking, milestones will be being missed. A FTT baby just doesn't look great. A very happy, active, otherwise well, underweight baby is probably just a skinny baby! But it's always good to get these things checked. I hope the paediatrician is reassuring.

Tom has been sick again. Sigh. We've had seven weeks of kids being sick and I'm over it. He had a really nasty gastro for two weeks, then he got the awful cold/fever on top of that, and on Sunday he started vomiting again. Fortunately it was only a 24 hour thing and apart from being tired and off solid food, he's much better today. I had mastitis too - ended up with a nasty little bleb on my nipple but that's clearing up. Hurts a bit though.

Hope everyone is well, and that those of us with school aged kids are enjoying the holidays! This is the busiest week of the year for my dh, and I'm looking forward to a break next week.

Am very close to starting my cake business - just looking into licensing etc - so am on ebay and gumtree looking for cake tins. If you hear of anyone getting rid of cake tins - novelty or standard - can you think of me please!

Paed appt went well. Weight he said he is 'catching down' as opposed to catching up lol. He said unless he continues to lose a lot or stops growing then come back, but that he is just getting in to his normal curve.

Hips he said def hypermobility but nothing to bad and not DDH so that was a welcome relief.

Glad to hear you got good news. Now the worrying can stop and you can just keep enjoying your little man.

I still can't believe that Jack is going to be 1 in about 4 weeks. Only feels like yesterday that I was pregnant.

I know! It's crazy. My older boy starts school next year and I can clearly remember patting him to sleep and singing to him as a newborn as though it was yesterday.

I'm getting lots of pressure from family to have the big first birthday party and I really don't want to. I though something small with close family would be nice but it's not going down well with my parents :(

My eldest start school next year too, in one way I'm looking forward to it, as I know he is ready, but it is also scary, someone else is going to be having such a big part in my childs life.

I'm hearing you on a small party. We did the big thing with Oscar and gosh it was a lot of work. With Jack we have made it immediate family only plus a couple of close friends, that still ends up being about 25 people.

I also have the joys of bitterly divorced parents so don't know what I'll do their as I'd rather not invite Dad, but to not invite ahhhh its all too hard sometime. I'd rather just have a cake and party with our little family of 5, I'm sure Jack would love it more than the big party anyway

<hug> megs - it is so hard to say goodbye to them when they start school. It's like they stop being completely yours any more. It's exciting to watch them learn and thrive, though.

Pandora, so glad the paeds appt went well! It was good to get checked out, but nice to be reassured.

Re birthday parties - we are having a get together for Tom, mostly with family and his godparents and a couple of other friends (like the priest who baptised him and her husband). We don't usually make a big fuss of first birthdays but it's a good opportunity to get together with people. It makes me sad that my eldest won't be there - she's becoming a JW and they don't celebrate birthdays, so she won't come to any anymore.

Tom is going through a really destructive phase. He's just tearing up everything. And now that he's walking everywhere, it's like a whole new world has opened up and he's a MONSTER. LOL. He's over all his bugs though and back to his usual sunny self, which is marvellous.
