I've been a bit slack posting sorry!
Wite - cool thanks for the link to the sleepywrap instructions.. I still haven't got mine yet though :( Happy one month to Harlow too! It's all going way too fast :)
Kirsten - glad to hear things are a bit better now :)
Buzzie - thanks, and that's what is worrying me - what to tell Isaac when he's older. I'd feel awful if I gave up trying to tell David about him, and have to tell Isaac that his father may not know he even exists. Makes me feel sick thinking about that. How is the house hunting going? Do you think you'll be moving very soon?
dory - are you still on antibiotics? They sound like the ones I had.. They sounded impossible when the dr explained how to take them: one every six hours, half an hour before food or two hours after food but right after I breastfeed! I had to write everything down for a few days to keep track! Oh and your pizza dough sounds delicious, I usually cheat and use a flat bread instead
Belfie - oh no I hope your migraine didn't last long. How awful.
fuzzy - Buzzie is right about the crying it out, at this age they need to know that their basic needs are being met, and the only way for them to tell us about them is by crying, and they develop trust by being responded to quickly. I keep remembering what my dad told me when he visited while I was pregnant, (it was the only piece of advice that he though was important enough to share) it was always remember little babies cry for a reason, and sometimes that just may be that they need to be near you. Sometimes the only way Isaac settles is if I hold him and gently bounce on the fitball or rock him, then when he's just about asleep I put him down in his pram bassinet (I don't have a cot). I agree with you it is a scary thought that bub might feel deserted. I read in a few places (one might have been in a BB article about sleep, I can't remember) that young babies haven't developed the 'concept' that something they can't see still exists somewhere else, so if you are not there, they don't have the understanding that you are coming back. That comes later, I'm not sure when but I think its one of the wonder weeks.
Buzzie - I know, they are growing sooo fast! Isaac is now in 000 clothes as he is so long. Everyonev comments (after saying wow look at his hair) about how 'huge' or long he is for his age. And omg his feet have literally doubled in size since he was born. Someone said to me that he'll be as tall as me by the time he is 5!
We had our best night last night! Isaac slept until 2 am, but had 3 small feeds (he kept falling asleep too quickly) so we were up until 3:45 feeding, but then didn't wake up until 6:45. Usually we are up 2 or 3 times in the night, so just once was fantastic. He has had lots of wind/bellyaches I think though, some vomiting a few times a day and crying while squirming and looking a bit pained. Is there something I can do about that?
-
fuzzy - just reading my wonder weeks info, and its week 19 when babies are "beginning to understand object permanence, that objects continue to exist even though we can't see them", so it's a while yet before our bubs realise that when we go away from them we are not gone forever.
edit: Do you guys know about any problems with only children? I don't think I know any only children, and I'm just wondering if they have any social problems or find it hard to relate to other kids? I'm pretty certain Isaac won't have any brothers or sisters, and just a bit concerned this might affect his social skills. I'm planning to go to play groups, and have him going to swimming lessons, and other things that he might like (either team sports or dancing/gymnastics, or whatever he shows an interest in.. anything to get him mixing with other kids) I know that's not the same as having other children constantly there to learn sharing and socialising though, so just wondering what your thoughts are..
-
Wite - I have Isabella in the next size up with is infants for $15.99 same as the toddler for DS but I think still worth it.
Bec - I've been looking a places but have to move in Jan, so it's too early to apply for them. I don't have the bond saved up yet otherwise I would be applying now just incase it takes a while to get approved.
Mum wants to be out by Jan 16th when the next rent is due, but I doubt that will happen! I'm going to tassie on Jan 26th and really didn't want to worry about money as I don't get holidays often at all so I know it'll come from
Money that could go to a house, but technically we are breaking the lease here anyway and 'should' be staying here till July!
Re. Only kids - I don't think there is issues with social skills if u keep then busy like u said u would like to do. I knew a few only kids and there only issue is sometimes being sad they don't have brothers or sisters but they can definatly be jut as happy as other kids.
I'm doing swimming lessons next yr with ash cos I know he badly needs to be around other kids. Espeically being in childcare when I was working to now just stuck with me lol
-
Bec- Hope your wrap arrives by the end of the week! Well i can't talk for "all" only children but Jett was an only child for 3 years & he had really great social skills.. In his last year he had very little social interaction with other kids due to my health, we had to stop going to mums group but when we would catch up with them on the odd occasion he was actually MORE socialable then some of the kids who went weekly! If your planning on putting Isaac into groups as he gets older, playgroup etc I honestly think he will be fine and not have any problems- sounds like he will be pretty well socialised in his future anyway and going to school etc is still constant learning, he will make friends and have sleepovers etc. Thats just my opinion anyway.. :)
Buzzie- Harlows only just fitting into the newborn size but I know she will go up a size in them pretty quickly-This girly stacks on the weight LOL! DS is still in nappies (Don't get me started on that issue that doe smy head in!) and they are about 17.99- such a great orice. I noticed they sell nappy bags aswell now & we also use their wipes!
-
Thanks Buzzie and Bec for advice. I do hate to leave her crying! Although I can handle it much better than DH can. He takes it so personally!
Bec - gorgeous photos on FB! He is adorable. My DH is an only child - and well I married him so he is not that bad! LOL. If anything negative I would say that perhaps it has made him a less tolerant and forgiving person. That is, people that annoy him he does not have the time of day for and if someone wrongs him he will never forget it. He was raised around adults and as such he grew up quickly and is extremely smart (up a year at school etc). He is also extremely close to his parents. If you can socialise Isaac with other kids the same age as much as possible, e.g. mothers group, day care etc then I think that would be fantastic.
hadnt heard of these Aldi nappies - will have to give them a try.
Chloe is in a few 00's now! She is very long -58cm. Oftens its because her legs are too long for the leg bits where her feet are enclosed.

Hi all,
Have been slack with posting and this is going to be a bit of a me post - sorry!!
The breastfeeding saga contines here - not sure when I last posted but have been battling thrush for weeks now and last week I was feeding Pearl in the middle of the night when she vomitted up heaps of blood which was pretty freaky to see. I couldn't work out where it cam from as although my nipple was cracked there was no blood coming out of it. Anyway that news spurred the child nurse into action and she organised for this really experienced LC to ring me that night when I was diagnosed with this rare condition called nipple vasospasm. So there is now doubt about whether I ever had thrush to begin with!! I have been on the medication since Friday (it gives me headaches) and I am still having the breast pain although I think it is getting slightly better (hard to say). So all in all it has been a bit of a nightmare which I hope will end soon!
Gotta go - DH is away for work and I have a headache and crying baby to see to - she had her 2 month immunisations today and I think she is feeling a bit poorly - poor little thing!
-
wow ive missed so much lol.
My cousin has a only child, and it doesnt effect social skills at all. Bec you will be great and im sure Isaac will be a great boy.
Blake has poor reflux so im giving him milanta which seems to be working yay. Also he may have bad wind, does anyone know of any good Techniques that i can use before relating to infocol?
-
Buzzie - that's great you've got some time to organise the move. And you must be so excited for the Tassie trip! It's a beautiful place, and how great would it be to get away for a while! :D
fuzzy - wow 00's! Isaac is growing so quickly too, but luckily he's the same length as last week, 54.5cm, which is kind of good in a way, I want to be able to use all the 000 stuff I have! But he did put on 450g in a week, so he might outgrow them sooner than I think. Your DH sounds like he had a great upbringing, and fantastic he's close to his parents (nothing worse than the opposite, both my sisters have no contact with my dad over silly reasons, its very sad) and the tolerance thing is probably common with non-only children but I can see how it could be an only child thing.
Chuckie - that must have been awful to see Pearl vomit up blood! Will having that condition affect your ability to breastfeed? I hope it all improves very soon
Deana - I was wondering where you got to! Sorry I don't know much about helping wind, I'm hopeless at burping Isaac. Mum manages to burp him for me so easily though, all she does is hold him upright on her lap with his chin over her hand and he burps. Doesn't work when I try it though. When he's been crying because of wind it settles him when I lay him on my lap on his belly, so I suppose try to put him into different positions?
Thanks everyone for the only child advice, I probably don't have anything to worry about. I'm going to make sure we do lots of things with other kids Isaac's age. The mothers group starts here in a couple of weeks so that's a start :) I don't want to disadvantage him in any way by him not having any brothers or sisters. Not that I wouldn't want another one, I'm just being realistic that it's most likely not going to happen.
Oh and I got my sleepywrap! Those things are magic, Isaac is asleep within a couple of minutes, and stays asleep while I get on with whatever I want to do! Seriously a great investment if your bub is having trouble settling :D
-
Hiya all - well quickly - the weekend trip to my mum was a debacle - but we had to start somewhere.
Fuzzy - I agree - too young to be left crying... but having said that if they are crying endlessly, it is ok to leave them for a little bit whilst you get your sanity back..... I try self settling sometimes, and it works and others, well most of the time, Hannah is like Chloe... she wakes up when I put her down, starts to whimper and grizzle and usually builds up to a full on cry/scream. The only way to soothe her is to pick her up. It's hard and frustrating at times, but makes the times when she does go down easily much more appreciated.
Chuckie - oh dear. I was wondering if I had thrush and was trying to remember who was suffering with the pain.... I hope the meds help.
Wite - you foodie you. The pizza turned out great too.
Bec - I am in essence an only child as my only sibling is 13 years older. What does it mean? It means I got a lot more parental attention ( both love and discipline - afterall can't blame anyone else or hide amongst siblings, but at the same time don't have to share the good attention!). I am not sure as a youngster whether I had a lot of contact with other kids - I did go to kindy so what, that's age 4 or something back then. I do know as an older child, once at school, I had lots of friends and contact with other kids but I also liked adult company. I have noticed that about a friend's child who is an only child - they relate very well to adults. Personally I miss the opportunity to be close to a sibling and have that relationship, but that;s only something I miss as a adult. I never gave it a thought as a kid. I had a great childhood. You're thinking about it already so it will be good for Isaac. Love the new photo too.
Deana - sorry Blake has reflux. That medication that Belfie says Locet (?) I have heard works an absolute treat... hmm - about windy pains? I try all of the following several times in any one windy pains session - gentle belly rubs in clockwise direction, laying on side and rubbing back, bouncing, laying across my forearm face down, bicycle legs ( sometimes it helps the fartses come out), bath, cool washer on the face to assist calming down if crying and gently running my hands down the head and face, again to help calm, so and sometimes a little session on the bouncer where Hannah can kick her own legs. I am sure she could power a small town by the energy and ferocity in her leg pumping sometimes, oh and over the shoulder for burps, or sitting up, leaning forward into my hands with the little song.... "any burpies in there, burpies, burpies burpies etc in there? ( a stupid ditty I made up) Or if the crying persists and I can't cope? A walk to get out of the house. The crying continues but sometimes I pop the pram up to raise H head, the movement and raising the head helps. Oh sometimes if I nurse her on my chest I make sure I support her feet so they are raised up near her body, Like a little froggy. A stupid little ditty I made up. It doesn't always work and sometimes it's a matter of just trying everything and eventually something works or the wind just shifts of its own accord.
Buzzy - sounds like something nice to do with Ash. And you only have one pair of hands and arms - it must be tough when they both go off. You are doing a great job!
Hannah is now 5.2kg and 7 weeks today. She is in 00's mostly, but some 000. She is the same size as my friends 13 weeker. The paed is really happy with her now - phew! Got to go give her some EMB as a comp feed and then try to get her to sleep. We've had a really tough four days - the nights have been fab - but the days - wow, hard yards. Today is better so far, which is nice. My niece always raved about Aldi nappies too.
Hello to Apes, Kirsten, Catherine, and Connie. I think that's everyone? Baby gurgles and smiles to us all. Oh yeah still no photo of Hannah Bear - maybe soon if today is a good day
-
thanks dory, that makes me feel better about it :) It sounds like you had a great upbringing, and relating well with adults seems to be a common thing with only kids, and that can only be a good thing! yes we do need a pic of Hannah Bear! It sounds like she's doing really well with all that growing, well done :D
I forgot to ask before, Isaac has a dark brown line going downwards from his bellybutton, like a linea nigra in pregnant women I think. Do all babies get that? How long does it stay there for?
-
Bec - not sure about the line.... but given that bubs get so many other hormonal side effects - pimples, swollen breasts and genitals... mood swings (LOL) ... I would reckon it's just part of being a new born and being BF'ed. If you're worried maybe call the parentline service in SA?
I finally got a pic up! It is when Hannah was in hospital, but I am on the lap top and don't have access to all the recent photos... I am so technology illiterate. I should be called Dry the Dinosaur. But at least you get to see her now AND I proved to myself I could do it. Yay.
-
Dory- That little photo of Hannah is just adorable, she looks like she was born with really nice skin!
Well I had my MCHN appointment today, I was worried what she would say about us now formula feeding-She suprise dme by saying that if the household is happier & I am less stressed out etc-Then that is not aproblem, she was very understanding about it actually! She also taught me good ways of settling Harlow and said that when a baby shows tired signs you basically have 5 minutes to get them to settle & sleep or else that is when they become overtired & you find it harder to settle them! She also taught me how to angel wrap her and I have just tried it and she is sound asleep for the first time in the afternoon (Though next doors kids are hurling abuse at each other & just woken her so I spoke to soon!)
-
Wite - Thankyou! Good news about your appointment and for not getting "in trouble". Hope the new techniques work for settling Harlow.
-
Dory (the dinosaur) - she is gorgeous!! She actually looks a lot like Chloe in that photo too which is weird
Deana - for wind; cycling his legs like he is on a bicycle apparently works (although it didnt for Chloe), watching what 'gassy' foods you eat, propping up the head end of his basinet/cot, patience and persistance!! Good luck with it, it is definately NOT easy
Wite - glad she was supportive. 5 minutes hey.. it usually takes me a lot longer than that to figure out she is actually tired to start with. *sigh*
Hi to everybody. No news here. Same old, same old. Nearly bath time x
Edit: Belfie - is X ok? Saw your post on FB about febrile convulsions (?).
-
Fuzzy - Yes he's ok. So scary tho. Basically just thought he had my head cold and he was falling asleep early (10.30am instead of 1pm), so was chatting with my 2 friends who had come over for a playdate & we just let him sleep. Then we heard his voice so DH went to get him up (cos I was feeding). Suddenly DH YELLS. He found Xander flat on his back, eyes staring open. He didn't respond to DH, jerked & arched his back then coughed & vomited. Then he went totally limp. So we've all run in there. I saw X saw just totally limp with the vomit & thought he was sick but didn't realize the full extent of it. My friend (has 3 kids) took charge & packed me back to feed & said don't worry we've got this. So I'm sitting on the sofa feeding desperately trying to see what's happening - I felt awful cos I just wanted to be with X. then they bought him out to me and he was soooo lethargic. Next thing he went unresponsive again!!! Just blanked out - noone home. DH had organized a dr's app for later that arvo & i said no I think we need it now or hossie. I was worried it might be meningitis or something cos he just looked so sick(& was very hot too). So we got an appt for basically straight away & off we went. He'd improved a bit when we got there but still very weak & could barely walk. Dr checked him & said it was a febrile convulsion!!! He had a temp of 39.7. Basically it's not how high the temp is but how quick it spikes up. Apparently 3% of kids get them between ages 6mths - 6yrs. So he's on panadol & nurofen to keep temp down plus antibiotics. I think if I had realized what DH saw I would have called an ambulance but we have an awesome GP so close so at least it all worked out fine. He should be fine now but gosh we're keeping a close eye on him. He was a lot brighter yesterday arvo which was good.
And little missie didn't settle till nearly 1am and I'm worried she's getting our bug cos she's super snuffly, plus I'm still coldy. Aah what I would give for more sleep, i'm wrecked. On a bright note,my beautiful friends had cleaned up my kitchen & living area for us, plus bought in washing before they locked up (as we just ran out of the house & left them to lock up).
Hope to bbl with persies.
FYI the RCH info sheet our doc gave us - it's a good source of info & I'd recommend reading it in case you ever have this happen with your kids: http://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/facts...fm?doc_id=3722
Everything I've read says it's basically scarier for the parents! I'd agree with that.
-
Belfie - you poor thing! That's my biggest fear if one of my kids having one as I had one as a baby but I went completely blue and had to have CPR, they said I was lucky to survive! I tell u what I would be a massive wreck ifthat happened to my kids! I think I was 1yo or around then maybe less.
I really feel for you going through that..
Hope Xander is feeling better today !!
-
Fuzzy- I didn't even know the "tired" signs to even look out for until the MCHN told me some yesterday (Yawning, fussing, jerking, scratching their faces, throwing their arms around, just general fussing)..Which probably explains why I have had some troubles getting her down during the day because I just thought she was being fussy for attention or because she was put down or something-when really she was tired & needed to be settled.
Belfie- Febrile convulsions are so scary aren't they, especially with how quick a temp can just go up and cause them. Glad you weren't at home with just you & the kids when it happened & that you had support there with you...Glad he perked up a little in the arvo aswell, what a relief hey..
-
far out Belfie, how scary! I wouldn't know what to do if that was Isaac so thanks for the info link. I hope Xander is ok, and I hope you and your DH are also ok after the scare
dory - Hannah is gorgeous! and your new signature line is beautiful. Glad you worked out how to get a pic up :)
