Cass, please don't freak out sweetie...yes it could be a big one but I think everyone in QLD knows they can't take any chances esp after the floods etc, so people will be careful and so the only damage will be to "stuff". Will your mum go to a public shelter or does she have someone she can shelter with (on the police side of things)? She will be ok, they have a couple of days to prepare. xxx
Arte, how do you know you're having a boy? Just curious... How did you go getting your tooth fixed? I did that a couple of weeks ago (flossed it out), my dentist was away so still waiting to get it done, luckily not painful unlike the one I flossed out a few weeks ago. I am totally ova being on the dental roundabout. My medicare sponsored dental treatment is about to run out too so from here on it gets very expensive.
MP how did the boys like the Disney thing?
Ginger we saw some dinosaur thing at the National Museum, done with humungous dinosaur puppets - pretty amazing. A few kids freaked out though :lol:. I think you just need to prep them up with a lot of "these aren't real it's just a show" talk beforehand.
Cally our cat walks around meowing loudly when we've been away too. Complaining LOL. They sure know how to make their opinions known, these felines.

MD, I just *know* it is a boy like they way I knew I would be pregnant before I conceived. But the feeling has faded now in favor of statistics - back to 50/50 lol. Hope your dentist goes well. $300 later I have my tooth refilled. Apparently poor baby tooth isn't lasting too much longer and the options are 5k implant, 4k bridge or 1.5k plate. So just hoping it lasts longer than expected lol. Congrats on the RAK.
MP, I keep meaning to say that J sounds adorable! A is nothing like W at this age, she is still very babyish iykwim. W was talking in 2-3 word sentences by now and she doesn't really have any words yet. The health nurse is referring her for a hearing test because she isn't saying mum or dad, often doesn't seem to understand when we are talking to her and she never reacts when DH pulls in the driveway (very distinctive vehicle noise).
Cass, that cyclone looks scary! How far up is your mum? Gee QLD is getting crapped on this year!
G, does kindy start this week? Good luck with your potential mum friend. There is a new lady around here that I get along quite well with and I think there is a good friend potential. I invited her to a bushwalk over the holidays to be friendly but not too desperate lol. But there might be a hitch. I looked on a NZ parenting forum to see if it was worth joining the belly group but she was in there so I thought I would just leave her to it. Then about a week ago I had another feeling I should check the thread and she has lost her baby. She was due two days before me. She doesn't know that I know so now I feel like a stalker or something.

Arte: she is in townsville. they are trying to evacuate people to higher ground ATM, but apparently it has to be fast as the winds are already gusting near on 100km/hr with the cyclone still a day away from landfall :o.
MD: they are not letting people into evac centres until after the storm passes. her friends are the ones evacuating to her place today lol. thankfully she lives on a bit of a hill; unfortunately it is facing the ocean lol. but that house survived cyclone althea so she is crossing her fingers that it will this time. you're right she is pretty well prepared (well as well as can be expected). i guess the main concern really is if the roof holds. but they are apparently going to all be in the bathroom (smallest room) for the event to be on the safe(r) side.
on a lighter note on the cyclone front DH reckons that mum should do a "Fidel Castro" on cyclone Yasi and go down to the foreshore and tell it to 'go away' (with her arm outstretched in a 'stop' manner :rolf:)...worked for Cuba but was bad news for Haiti though...hmmmmm.
anyway, sorry for not much else news, my mind is kinda full ATM :)

MD, I took L and E to that show years ago! It was done by Uni students for a thesis or something wasn't it? The kids loved it.
Cass, I hope your mum is able to stay safe. I agree with MD, everyone is so more aware of natural disasters now so naturally there would be a heightened sense of panic.
Cally, do you think K would like a sleeping bag if she likes to be tucked in? In a sleeping bag she will always have he covers over her.
AFM, summer semester is officially over! I did the maths exam yesterday which was pretty good - some of the questions were the same as the old test paper we were allowed to study LOL. So now I have to wait for the marks to come out on Feb 18. And most of you know my poor old girl Marvin had to be put down :( It was just awful seeing her the way she was. I miss her though. Even though the past few weeks she'd been quite scarce because she was nearly always under the house sleeping she was still around kwim? We could call her out and she'd come to us for a cuddle. But now I can't :( It just feels weird to not have her here anymore.

Trill, I know how it feels to lose your dog. It has been a month now since I lost my girl and sometimes I still expect to turn around and see her/have her come running to the door when I get home. It is hard to adjust.
Yay for summer semester being over - and double yay for recycled test questions! My psych papers tend to use up to 30% recycled multichoice, so by the time you have done a few old papers you can answer them automatically.
Not sure about the birth this time. DH admitted that he was being a twat and that it wouldn't have done W any long term harm if my mum had looked after him for a couple of hours. He regrets not being there for A's birth now so I think he will be a bit more open to child-minding options this time. He wants his mother to come up, but she would have to be there for at least a two week window to catch the event and I am terribly not keen on that. At least my mum would politely leave a couple of hours later.

Again on the lost pets - I just walked into the sleepout where I had put Chim's bowl and her food (to drop off to mum), and W must have been in there and the bowl was full. I nearly cried :(

just a quickie...
mum has found a place to stay in townsville that is better than hers. she was with different friends that had the army come knocking and telling them to leave...so they decided to stay :rolleyes: mum had nowhere else to go, but thankfully she got a phone call at the 11th hour to stay somewhere else.
my friend in cairns tried to get into an evacuation centre with her children and were told no room. they have now been told to just bunker down in whatever shelter they can find :( (she has been teaching her 3 year old how to get into the attic JIC...i can't believe it. they are in a floodzone and all and there just isnt anywhere to go...

Must be pretty nerve wracking time in FNQ tonight. I guess the only good thing is that people have had a bit of notice. Trill I totally agree with your FB comment. The media make me sick with their 'natural disaster' specials. Hope everyones friends and rellies are safe. My aunt and uncle are on a boat in airlie. So they have left the boat and moved south till it passes.
I am feeling sorry for poor Lu. Is she the only one not going to kinder this year??

Cass :hug: Try not to fret. Mattresses in bathrooms etc is horrible but it keeps people safe. They have made all the right preparations, it sounds like they are in a good sturdy building, people will help each other, and now it's just a case of waiting until it's over.
Trill, good to have you back. :) I'm so sorry you lost your doggie friend. They have such a special place in our hearts. I mourned for ages after we lost old Beags. :hug:
Arte, I'm glad your DH has realised the error of his ways, hopefully it will be so much less stressful for you this time around.
JM, no Missy E is not going to Kindy this year. She has to wait utnil next year which is a pity cos her little friend from FDC will be starting mid-year so they will only do one semester together.

Of course it's not as bad as after Tracey - no loss of life or major injuries reported at this stage - no building codes then but people died during Tracey because they didn't prepare...but they won't know what the extent of the damage is until they do their aerial surveying.
No such thing as 3 year old kindy here, you start Kindy after you turn 4 but only 1 year before you start school. It's part of the free public schooling system. Well, actually she will go for one short session a week in term 4 (like a kindy orientation), I forgot that when I wrote that last night LOL

JM, the way they do preschool here is 1 day a week as a 3yo - which mean the can turn 3 early in the year but most are turning 4 and then at least 1 or up to 3 days a week for 4yo's for the year before they start school. So A will do a full day on Fridays and then next year I will put him in for two days probably. The other kids only went for 1 day, but I think A will need it plus it will give me an extra child free study day. LOL at letting the dept of sustainability know about the waxing. You wouldn't want to get a fine for illegal de-forrestation ;)
I haven't seen any updates from Cass, but knowing that there are no reports of people hurt is a positive sign.
Speaking of preschool, I got A a new shirt today. The have polo shirts you can buy with the preschool logo on it so they have kinda a uniform to wear. I had a shirt of L's still but it's a size 6 so it's too long for him. I also dug out the preschool hat the others wore too. He was a bit miffed though when he realised that GIRLS were going to be at preschool too LOL. He thought it would only be boys.

The whole kindy thing confuses me - is it different in all states? Here it is not part of the school system ie not required, but it is govt funded. The first 20 hours at any childcare or kindy are free, then there is a fee. They have just made massive early childhood cuts so now there is a 'donation' per week that you have to pay or you can't go. It is from 3 years until 5 years. You can choose how many days they do. Last term W did two days, this year it is 3 days. They can run just a morning session, morning and afternoon sessions, or all day. Our kindy is about to move to full day licence so it will be as long as school day, but I will still finish W at 1pm because he is just shattered by evening and I think a full day is too long for him. And he seems so little to be away for the whole day.
Trill, how are your kids going with the loss of Marvin? W still randomly talks about it, like a couple of days ago he said "I was the saddest when we put her into that hole in the ground", just out of the blue so he must thinking about her. Your kids are probably a bit more used to death with the farm though.
I got my second assignment back for summer school and I have 35% out of possible 40% for the internal part of my paper. So as long as I pass the exam the minimum mark I can get is a B (unless there is scaling...)

Poor Noah missed his 1st day at kinder today - he has hurt his leg and cant walk... dh is home with him... we had some blood tests as they think it may be an infection (septic something) that is quite severe. apparently he is doing a lot better now than this morning... anyway - also a heads up i may not come tomorrow if he is still not walking well and miserable.... will update in the morning or PM ginger and let you know.. if you dont hear from me i will be there....will be so annoyed if i miss it - i took the day off especially!

Arte, it does vary from state to state which is crap because there is no consistency for education. They are introducing a National curriculum that means all students will be taught the same thing but I don't think that changes the point at which kids enter 'big school' In NSW they do 2 years of preschool (or 3 if they are young) and that is not affiliated with school at all and isn't Govt funded. When they enter school, they start in Kindergarten for 5 days a week at regular school hours etc.
The kids are OK about Marvin. They miss her, but they didn't know what was going on till it was all over and done with. I guess they are a bit more used to death because of the farm, but we'd been preparing them that she would die soon anyway so it wasn't unexpected for them. A talks about her a lot though, just general stuff though.
