Deb, when you are feeding Gabby to you get a tight tingling feeling in your boobs not long after she starts feeding? If so, that is your let down. I say feed her what ever way you are comfortable doing it. If you haven't got sore nipples or any discomfort then what is the problem. DId the lady that told you how to feed her have big bb's? Don't want to confuse you any more, just do what works for you and Gabby.
Fi, I think the same goes for you, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Yay for getting a good nights sleep too. Do you express out heaps before a feed or just alittle to make your nipple softer and easier to get into her mouth?
Not long got back from our 6 week check. Tehya is perfect - like I didn't know. She didn't weigh her though and I really wanted to know how much she had gained. She wanted to check my uterus, damn it. Thought I'd had enough of people looking down there. Also gave me a script for the mini pill. I won't be getting that filled in a hurry. The last thing I want back are periods, I've only just stopped bleeding now.
Anyways, hope that all are well and bubs are growing nicely.

Gotta love how much people wanna peer up there throughout your life, hey? I don't feel the let down unfortunately. I know that I must have it because when I feed Gabby without a bra on, the other boob starts leaking profusely! You are right, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I spoke to my Mum and she reckons that if Gabby was putting on weight then the way I was holding her before must be fine. After all, if she wasn't able to swallow properly, she wouldn't attach so well. I actually find it harder to get her attached the "proper" way than the way I was doing it before. So it's back to feeds that last at least 30 minutes. She seems far more content.
However, because of all the screaming, her little voice has gone horse! The poor thing. Lauren is over atm... doing my dishes. Isn't she lovely! I tried to put Gabby down but she screamed after 30 minutes. I tried to settle her but to no avail so I cuddled her back to sleep out in the lounge room. She is now asleep in her rocker dispite the noise. I don't care where she sleeps, so long as she sleeps!
Fi - it's so hard when you get advise from "experts" and it turns out to be a load of codswallop! I tell you, we need to learn to trust our instincts more, hey? And not worry about doing things the "text book" way unless it isn't working for us. I am glad Jenna has settled down a little for you now that you have fixed up her routine. Good work! Bummer that your hug a bub hasn't arrived. I will have to come and visit soon. Let me know when it is ok for you :) Visiting makes the day a little more bearable, I find. Maybe I should just go out visiting all day, LOL.
Shannon - I am going to try and take on your approach. If this is how Gabby is going to be, then so be it. I only worry about how much crying she is doing (thus the horse voice) but maybe if I don't try so much to put her down, she won't cry as much. You are right - I have the time to sit and cuddle her so why not, hey? Stuff the housework. When Neil gets home, he can cuddle her and I can get the essentials done then. Time for me to let go, hey?

I have a little question. Bubs cord fell of last friday and its really bloody today. Is there anything I can clean it with or does anyone have any advice for me?

Kayla - I was told to just use a cotton bud and warm, boiled water to gently clean the area.

Hi Guys,
Hug-a-bub arrived today - OMG - its fabulous. The little munchkin went to sleep straight away in it. I can see myself getting so much done during the day in it - hopefully I will be able to settle her in the sling, and then put her in the bassinette so I can catch some ZZZzz's too.
Jenna's cord fell off about 4 days ago - its bloody too, I'm not worried about it. We just clean it once a day, and I figure the blood is not doing any harm. Better than mucking around with it.
Had the MCHN do a house visit today. She said I'm doing really well, but I'm to do less cause my fanny is seriously hurty. Not surprisingly, it aches like crap when I do too much - and when I look at today - up at 4am for feeds, off to Melbourne to drop Mum off, left 5am, got there 6am. Had no sling so had to set up the pram.... in the cold!!! Had coffee, then left for the nursery north of melbourne (45mins drive....) wandered around and bought all the plants for Lara - $250 which we were sure would cost us about $4-500 at a normal nursery - BIG SAVINGS!! Got to Lara, fed/changed her, then changed her again, and again...... (In between getting wee'd on!) Laid the plants out, then planted them all (like 40 pots!!!!) then came home. I'm absolutely buggered, and like I say, stitches are KILLING ME!!!!!!!!!
God I hope she sleeps tonight. Please please please let us get at least 6 hours!!!!!!!!
Deb - visiting sounds great, but let me get through this weekend first. I need to catch up on sleep. And you get to visit me this time!
I love feeding the way I do - across my chest. I really had to perservere for about 2 days to get it though, and even now I muck up the position sometimes. I'm really happy cause I can feed her standing up, swaddled, then over the shoulder to burp her, and thats normally the easiest way to get her down. I think its worthwhile for you to try it, but maybe wait until your boobies settle down?
Trish - I have to express if she goes longer than about 3-4 hours between feeds, although it is getting better. Its really annoying at night, cause its hard to get the timing right and be ready for her, when shes ready for me. Oh - it makes me tired just thinking about it!!!
The MCHN was really good today about expressing and storing. She said I really dont need sterile storage - thats more for hossy where there are bugs that aren't ours. At home she just said splash some hot water over the bottles if they come out of the dishwasher. yay - less work.
OK - thats a mammoth post from me, and now dinner is ready so I better skedaddle. I am calling missy moo Jenna-Benna, and it gets Shane SOOO annoyed. V funny!!

Good to hear the feeding is going so well.
That hug a bub sounds great. Where did you get it and how much? I might have to invest in one because the sling I have is pretty crappy and I can see my back hurting after a while because it doesn't sit very straight.
I just fed Gabby in my bed then cuddled her to sleep. Now she is back in her cradle (who knows how long for). I was so tempted just to sleep with her but I know that if I do, I won't be able to get to sleep later. Plus, Neil is out getting dinner so I would just have to wake up for that n e way.
I am with you, Fi. Pleeeeeease at least 6 hours ;)

Very quiet in here at the moment. I'm guessing that we are all enjoying our beautiful babies. Nothing exciting going on here - Jacob is still sleeping nicely for us at night but making up for it with his whingey time in the afternoons.
Fi - I was exhausted after reading your post! Don't know how you got all of that done. I'm excited if I do the washing and make dinner 8-[

Kayla - We've also had a little blood around the belly button area. I have just been cleaning it with water then making sure I dry it completely. Jacob's stump fell off 1w3d ago and it first happened about a week after.

Kayla, my mum told me to clean Zander's cord stump / belly button with metho. Yes I know it sounds bad, but when she had us they told her to clean our belly buttons with alcohol to dry it out, but the stuff they gave her wasn't real strong. So anyway, she used metho with all 4 of us & we all have good belly buttons. I did the same for Zander & his dried out & went nice really quickly.

Sarah, They used to use metho when I had the big boys too. When I had Tehya I asked Victoria - my midwife, why they don't use it anymore. Apparently research showed that the metho was actually preserving and not allowing it to dry out as fast. Water is supposed to be best.
Fi, not a wonder your fanny is sore. Slow down!!! I don't know how you do it girl. Still fantastic that you guys got all the plants and planted them too.

Ahhh - sleep. Last night after Jenna was fed, I just handed her to Shane and said - you get her down, I'm going to sleep!! I dont even think I woke up when he came to bed. Bliss.
So a quick feed in the night between about midnight and 1:30, and she went straight back down. What an angel, and thank goodness. We had a nap in bed together this morning with the cats, and now I have her asleep in the hug-a-bub. She took a little while to get settled in it today, but now shes in lala land.
As for doing too much - I didn't get breakkie until lunchtime today, and I haven't even hung out the washing or washed the nappies. And its a great drying day, so I have to get onto that. But Jenna-benna is fed, changed (twice....) bathed and asleep, so I gotta feel proud about that!
When I was eating my toast just before (breadmaker bread which is really crumbly) I looked down and there was crumbs all over her head and neck....oops. Must remember not to eat over her when shes in the sling!
Deb - the hug-a-bub was expensive, more than I think it should be, but I guess you cant really put a price on a settled baby and mum. It was $120 including express delivery, and you can find them on the internet. I got mine in blue and red - Portarlington colours, so I can wear her on the sideline tomorrow and scream at my girls. Or Shane can wear her - whatever works.
Sarah - Mum and Shane both wanted to use alcohol on Jenna's stump, but the midwife at the hossy said no. Its funny how times change!! Realistically, I dont think it matters too much. As long as they dont look puffy and red, its probably OK.
I'm going to try for an afternoon nap once I have the washing hung out - I've got to take her out of the sling and try to get her down. It will be interesting to see if it works. I also have to organise health insurance today. Jenna has a little bump on her head which has everyone worried. It wouldn't be covered by insurance now anyway, but at least the next bump will be.

sarah i used the metho on lani (i actually used medi swabs) which is the same sort of thing - hers was really gooey after it fell off (maybe something to do with me not drying it well - i have a thing about belly buttons - don't ask lol) i asked my echn if it was okay and she said fine - only used it twice - her belly button is lovely lol

My netball girls lost again, but they came off the court with a smile on their faces, so its not all bad.
Trish - you are so right about the times changing thing. After all - we rub metho on our ears when they are pierced dont we?? Whats the difference between that and a belly button?
My little girl is gobbling up all my milk at the moment. LAst night before bed I actually had nothing else to give her - and she wasn't settled so it could have turned bad.
Oh well - when I can't do anything else I just hand her to daddy and say - heres the daughter you bloody wanted!! He had to settle her last night, and it took him quite a while.....
We have 2 sets of visitors coming tonight, why can't Shane stagger them?? They better be gone by 7:30, otherwise we dont get Jenna settled until its really, really late!!

Been nice and busy over the weekend here. Done heaps of housework - including my room for a change that looked like a bomb went off in it, been shopping (fun and food) and caught up with a few people.
Other than that nohing else going on here. Jacob is still sleeping nicely over night and having feeds every 3 hours during the day - and a couple of "snacks". I'm amazed I can do anything with the amount of time during the day he's nuzzling on me.

Fi bummer about the netball. Dont you love being able to hand bubs to daddy and have them deal with it lol. My dh is great like that thankk god as Pheonix is quite the handful at the moment.
Miss Nixee has decded no sleep between 11.30pm and 6am for the past 3 nights. She sleeps like an angel all day though. At least we can gain our sanity back during the day but we dont manage to sleep. Dh had that awful flu virus going around for most of the week so now he is feeling better he is giving me break during the night. I am so hoping I dont come down with it though. His mum dad and brother all have it too so chances are I will get it soon enough. Worried about Pheonix getting it though.
She has also been a little constipated which I am sure will be contributing to the sleepless nights. #-o

Kayla - sorry to hear that Nixee has day and night mixed up. That must be a pain! I hope she can sort it all out soon so that you guys can get some sleep.
Nat - sounds like you guys are going well. It is amazing how often we have to feed out little bubbas, hey? It feels like the moment you finish, you have to start all over again in such a short time!

Kate - Geelong hospital provided all the bath lotions etc. while we were there so I didn't take any. I did take clothes to put Gabby in though because I don't like the little gowns that they have there. I still used their nappies tho! Also, as far as lotions go, they don't really need them for the first few weeks because they have their own natural oils taking care of their bum. It's preferential, of course, but I still don't put a great deal on Gabby's bum except a little powder every now and then. She hasn't had a rash at all so far. In hospital they provide cotton balls for you to wipe their bottom with. Once I got home, I used a face washer (with warm water) for pooey bum.

Nat - I hear ya on the feeding!! I told Shane that feeding her is a full time job as it takes up at least 6 hours of my day when you count burping, cuddling, nappy changes. Oh the mind boggles....
Kayla - Shane has been sick too - its the pits, but thankfully it didn't hit him too hard. Either that or hes put on a brave face for me. I've been quite the little cryer the last few days. Just sitting and bawling my eyes out and the smallest little thing. I think its all just reality sinking in.
I love feeding her and then palming her off to dad. Bliss!
Kate - I wouldn't bother taking anything in to hossy either with regards to lotions etc. The only time we really needed to use anything on Jenna was to get rid of a little blood from her head. It was kinda gross. Now we just wash her in water, no soaps or anything. I use an almond oil for massage after a bath with smells yum and makes her skin so soft. I also use homemade wipes for cleaning up her botty - they are papertowel versions of babywipes, but I use a polar fleece/flannellette cloth to dry her up, so no residue stays behind to react with her skin.
I have found she gets a reddish bottom when we are on disposable days, so I have used barrier cream a couple of times on her bottom. As for clothes - I reckon take your own baby clothes in. Its the only time she'll get a full days use of out one set of clothes, and it really makes her feel like your bubba when shes in her own gear. 4-5 days in hossy??? I hope you are in a private room!! I would have gone nuts!!
I have a cracked nipple. And it is bloody killing me!! There is a huge gaping would on the side of my nipple, and it hurts so much when she attaches. I am putting lansinoh on it the second she has finished with that side, but its SOOOOOO sore!! Actually, both boobs are sore, but this one especially so. Dont ya just love bfding??

Kate I didn't take anything into hospital with me as far as washes/lotions for Matilda, but because she was so overcooked she came out a bit scaley and our hospital didn't have lotion provided... at your next visit maybe ask what they have provided as far as that is concerned.

Fi, The Lansinol helps great just make sure you keep it up. Also fresh air and trying to keep your nipples dry (like no wet nursing pads) will hep them heal. Too bad that it's getting too cold to go topless hey :)

Kate - maybe they just suggested the lotions in case you have a preference? I know it was suggested to me that I bring in a pillow. Even though they have plenty of pillows, they say it's nice for you to have one from home. Like hell! My pillows seriously need replacing - they are hideous! LOL

Well we can finally explain Jacob's little "fussy" periods over the last couple of days. Mr Boofa (as my mum has started calling him) has had a massive growth spurt!! Took him to the health centre this morning and told the nurse how fussy he had been, the constant feedings and sleepfullness. She said, let's just see what the scales have to say about this. Well, blow me down! Jacob put on 400gms and now weighs 4.08kgs/9lb. He has also grown 2cms over the last week and another 1cm head circumference. This also explains that darn suit that wouldn't do up around the crotch - I thought I must have shrunk it in the wash LOL!! While I was there I asked her about the blood around the belly button and her suggestion is to just use straight dettol - she even did it for me to show how much "pressure" I could use to clean it up.
Fi and Kalyla - I love our new avatars! We all look so spunky with our new bubs!!

Little miss is doing fine - the last couple of nights I haven't woken up Shane during the night, and wouldn't you know it, I've got her pretty much straight back down after her feed for a 3 hr kip. So I'm feeling alot more human, but I just need to work on the naps during the day. I just dont seem to have time! Its all very well to say - leave the housework, but realistically it just doesn't work that way with washing. it has to be done, and I have to do it!! Specially the nappies.
Jenna is bang on the 50th percentile line for everything - weight, length, head etc. Oh my little girl is average.
Cracked nipple is a killer. I went to the lactation consultant on Tuesday for a last minute appt as I was dying - and basically I'm doing everything right. I was probably just a little lazy on a couple of midnight feeds when my eyes were hanging out of my head, and the damage was done.
Its not infected yet, but shes told me just to flop thme out whenever I can, no lanolin (keep potential messy infections away) adn just use hind milk on them. It hurts SOOOOOO much, but I'm learning to deal with the pain. I just wiggle my toes for a distraction!!
Nat - I hear ya on the growth spurt too. Jenna was feeding every 2 hours and just being unbearable, and she had put on 180g in 5 days. Probably not the gain you've experienced - but she's slowly working her way up to the magic 8lb. Deb came over yesterday and brought lunch (THANKS DEB!!! :D ) and Gabby looked huge in comparison. Mummy is obviously doing a very good job there.
Righto - better get off this thing as I need to have a nap!

LOL at the foot thumpers Shannon. I'd say foot thumping and toe curling all in one. My cracked nipples (read 2 of them) have only just healed. I swear they look ed like someone had taken to them with a knife and tried to chop them off.
Fi, have you tried using a nipple shield? Advent make some good ones. I used one for my feeds for around 2 days on and off just for a bit of extra protection, also lessens the pain for you.

Nah Trish - haven't bothered with them. They are slowly getting better. I would say I only thump my feet about 20 times now at the first attachment, and then they start feeling OK.
Oh - and at the end when you aren't 100% sure if she's finished sucking, and then she proves it by sort of sliding off the nipple and then sucking again?? Killer. Absolutely painful. I dread the feeds where I have to use the LHS. Trish - you poor thing with 2. At least I get reprieve on the RHS. I think I'd go batty if I didn't.
Shane just made a really not funny joke at a bad time. He joked about my boobs not being as good as what they were. Well that managed to get me crying.
And yesterday at Medicare when I found out that if I went on Shane's card, me and Jenna would be behind his children in the order. Not happy. I nearly cried there too. And today when I couldn't get into see my Dr, and the receptionist told me I might have to see another dr - I nearly cried then too.
I am pathetic.
How long til the hormones settle down??

Poor you Fi, give Shane a smack in the head too. The sad thing is though your bb's will never be the same again. Mine have gotten worse affter each kids, even though they're small they still sag and I think I have 9 inch nipples now. It's all that sucking in and out bub does to them :)
Hormones take a while to settle down, especially when bfing. You'd think it would all go back to normal after the baby was born hey.

I gave Shane a verbal smack in the head last night after I cried for about 3 hrs non stop. I told him something had to give, and it was either going to be my relationship with him, with Jenna, or his relationship with her.
Today hes been very clingy, but at least he's here, and I haven't got a child strapped to me!! I'm even allowed to go and buy my camera now without a baby. What a privilige..
