Newborn - 1 Month, April '05

Hey guys!

We are getting the same thing with spelling of Zander's name as well - we have to tell everyone it's Alex-Z-ander. Very frustrating, but that's what we wanted!!

It's funny, usually Zander is better with noise - like right now someone is mowing & I have the back door open, the TV is on in here & Aaron is playing some racing game in the other room & he's sleeping through it. I think he was just waaay too tired to sleep yesterday afternoon or something.

Hope Brandon is feeling better today Trish.

Sounds like Bas has really got things worked out in the sleep department now Zola, well done!

So was Gabby the life of the party Deb?? Sounds like the expressing is going really well for you two.

As for us, we are still struggling on the sleep front - took me 1hr 45mins last night to get him to sleep which meant I was up until after 1am. At 5am he wasn't so bad, but now this morning it took us a long time to get him off again. Our hammock arrives on Tuesday so hopefully that will help - he seems to fall asleep with movement....

Anyways, I just wanted to let you guys know that I will be a bit scarce this week. We are going to try really hard to get this routine thing happening cos Aaron has to go back to work next week. I really need to spend the time with just the three of us to get things sorted out.

Still love you guys, just need some time for us IYKWIM. Please don't forget me though when Fi & Kayla have their bubs.....

Deb, when I was making Tehya's ticker I saw the bumble bee and thought of you straight away. Noah is going good with Tehya, I think that he does get jealous at times but he is also very protective, sometimes he won't let the other boys near her at all. Doesn't like to share his Dad with her much though. Sarah's right too, the pic of Gabby and Erin is gorgeous, all the pics are great but that one is really nice, you should try it in black and white, I think it would look great. Just a thought :)

Sarah, I hope that you guys got a better nights sleep last night and that Zander is settling abit better for you.

Zola, woohoo on getting another good nights sleep, got to love it. Now to graduate to 8 hours straight ;) Can you tell I'm jealous :)
Brandon seems alot better this morning now Mark is sick ](*,) poor bugger has spent most of the morning on the loo. I wish I could just take Tehya and stay away from them all so that she doesn't get it again and that I don't get it either. Nasty aren't I.

We had a fairly good nights sleep I guess, after her sleeping the afternoon away she finally woke around 9pm for a play and a feed. Changed her into her pjs and she crashed around 11pm, she woke abit after 12 but I put her dummy in and rocked her bassinett til she went back to sleep til 1.30am then up again at 4.45am and stayed awake til 6am, crashed out again til 8.30 ish. All in all apart from the early morning play she had it was pretty good. She was quiet and just laying there smiling at me, how can you be cranky and wish her asleep when their looking so cute.

Better go, still haven't shower yet :)

You are all talking routines, I hadn't even thought about a routine yet. Charlotte is feeding 3 hourly but she doesn't have a routine as such. She does sleep a little longer at night but I do seem to be getting up 3 hourly but I am getting up when she stirs, not when she cries. No doubt she will get there eventually. Congratulations to everyone who is managing to get their bub into a routine.

I started to write my birth story the other day and walked away to tend to Charlotte and my computer died on me so I lost it all. I will try to start again tomorrow before I forget it all. It is quite an emotional experience writing it up.

I am having problems expressing. I tried using a hand pump but it didn't work so I may try hand expressing. Isn't it messy hand expressing? Do you do it into a bowl?

Maryann, I put a sterilised bottle under my bb and express into that, you may find it hand to have a clean bib resting under your bb to catch any stray milk too.

Don't worry Maryann - we haven't even come close to a routine yet. I am just demand feeding atm - it just so happens that Gabby is pretty good with that. She has kind of set her own routine. I have to go to the health centre in a couple of weeks so I am hoping to have some sort of routine down by then. Until she is old enough to do controlled crying, I don't want to try and force her to do anything as yet (again, because she is pretty good with sleeping etc. I can say that!!). Good luck with the hand expressing. I only expressed my colostrum by hand so it wasn't very easy. I have an electric breast pump (Nuk) and it works a treat. Maybe you could hire one of the Medela ones from ABA?? I have heard they are pretty good and they have attachments so that you can do both boobs at once. Hmm... may even look into one myself!!

Sarah - I hope the hammock does the trick for you! I don't blame you for being scarce next week. It's hard to get online when you want to! I hope it all goes well for you and we will miss you but you gotta do what you gotta do, right??

Trish - how cute that Noah doesn't let the other boys go near Tehya! The protective older bro already hey? My neice, Ebonie, was telling her older brother, Shannon, off yesterday when he touched Gabby. "Don't touch her, she's sleeping!" she would say. SO cute! I got it all on video too.

My sister's God parents came by to visit today. They are like family - so much so that we have always called them Aunty and Uncle. They bought Gabby a really cute little soft toy that plays music. They are a very musical family so it was quite fitting. Needless to say, they were besotted. They have done so much for my Mum and our family over the years so it meant a lot to have them drop by with their 3 kids (whom I used to babysit).

Had a prety horrid night here, bub wanted to be fed too often and I wasn't obliging... couldn't think straight either so that doesn't help. I have finally got Violet into 000 suits... they fit muuuuuch better!! I had to wash them all tho, when I pulled them all out our I found a ****roach and hundreds of baby ones....ewwww!! It was one of those native brown ones with the wings (I actually buy them to feed to the lizards, they call them Woodies), so that wasn't as bad as finding a big black one! I have no idea what they were doing in there. They didn't seem to be eating the clothes... any ideas? May sound yuck but I scraped most of the baby ones off into a container and I'll keep them till thay are bigger and feed them to the lizards... that'll save me a few $$, just have to feed them now. (Now you are all starting to think I am a freak!! LOL)

Sarah, sorry to hear you had a horrible night too. I can only imagine it can get better. I have to say that Violet is the sookiest baby out of all of mine so far... Alecia was the best!! Dream Baby! Being 15 when I had her, if she had've been a sook I think I would've given up on her...lol, it aint easy to look after a baby and keep your sanity.

Deb, to this day Alecia still gets her name pronounced wrong, even by all my sisters. I remember when I named her I said I want her name to be pronounced AL EE SH EEA, and ppl still pronounce it AL ESH A... I think I am just about the only one who gets it wright... even she gets it wrong!! lol.

Again... I can't remember what else I was going to write!! Better go anyway... got tonnes to do.

Tanya - sounds like Violet and Gabby are up to the same tricks with wanting to feed allllll the time. It gets so frustrating, doesn't it? I know that she is just trying to build up my supply but it is such a pain to sit still for an hour + especially when she is only half-heartedly sucking! I would rather express and give her the bottle, LOL. Please tell me it gets easier? Urrgh at your family saying Alecia's name wrong all the time. I was watching Oprah last night and they had the desperate houswives on. One of the characters is Gabrielle and Oprah could say it properly so why can't the rest of the world??? :-k

Gave Gabby a bigger comp feed last night but I think she drank too fast because she hurled some of it back up afterwards. Her first proper spew - the poor darlin. She slept for 6.5 hours tho so that was good!

A question, how do you know when you have burped the baby enough? The midwives told me that if you sit her up, she will burp within a minute otherwise she will fart away the rest of the wind on her own. Yet, my Mum used to burp all of us like it was going out of fashion. Is it not the done thing to pat and rub backs anymore? Mostly Gabby will burp after a few seconds of being sat up with a few pats and rubs but sometimes I can tell she is still a bit windy (rolling her eyes, slightly purple top-lip) but I don't want to keep patting and rubbing if it does more harm than good iykwim?

Gabby is driving me nuts today. She won't go down to sleep and all she wants to do is hang off the boob. I put her on and not 2 minutes later, she falls asleep and stops sucking. I take her off, she wakes up and wants more! I can't burp her because she cracks it and turns her head this way and that looking for the boob. She's all windy and has done some big poos that kinda look like mustard and cottage cheese (mmmm tmi). So much for my cruisey baby hey??

Just quickly popping in to say, we officially have a diagnosis - Zander has reflux :( We have got new formula & gripe water for every bottle until tomorrow then we have to ring the Dr in the morning to report in....

Sorry to hear Gabby isn't going so well Deb, but hey we all of our days don't we?!

I am going to give the hand expressing a go. I may also look into hiring a pump from ABA. It would be great to let DH do a feed and me sleep. The hand pump just isn't working.

Deb, I am having a frustrating day as well. Charlotte just wouldn't have a nap. I put her in the bedroom in the dark and patted her for a while but she wouldn't sleep, then I let her fall asleep on me and then put her in her bassinette and she woke up again. I finally worked out that she sleeps better with the TV on so she is here in the pram in the lounge room with me. She has been asleep for 2 hours now. If only the mother would sleep during the day as well.

Oh Sarah, you poor thing. At least now you know what the problem is.

Colleen, that is great advice, I will be checking Charlotte's tongue all the time now!

Colleen - that's great that medicare subsidises the formula for you! Not so good that he is lactose intolerant tho!!

Maryann - sounds like you are having a day like me!! We have the pram out too but she doesn't want that either. I am glad Charlotte managed to get a couple of hours sleep.

Still no change. Gabby hasnt' slept all day. I took her for a walk earlier and she slept the whole time but woke as soon as we got home so she only had about 20 minutes. Urrgh! She just wants the boob! She has been sick a few times today and has done some explosive poos. I just hope she sleeps tonight!

Gonna give Mum a call if she doesn't settle soon. The poor little sausage! I just don't know what to do to help her.

Well, after a very long day, I decided to give Gabby her bottle early and she finally went to sleep at 8:30pm! She slept through until 1:30am, had a good hour-long BF then back to sleep until 6:30am. Thank goodness! After the day I had, I needed a decent sleep! She slept for another hour from 7:30-8:30am but is wide awake now. I have tried to BF her again but she only sucks for a little while so I have taken her off for at least another hour. I hope we don't get a repeat of yesterday's antics!! I would like to at least get a couple of things done without having to sit in a chair BFding all day!

Felius - thanks for letting us know about Zola being away. What a pain that it is still going to be a couple of weeks before you get into your new home!

Deb - I hope that Gabby has a good day for you today! Fingers crossed! I have to say that she sounds like she is doing pretty well, at least she has some sleep! How are you feeling though?

I am trying to get used to the sleep deprivation part of being a mother again! Hayley is extremely fussy and wont sleep for more than an hour or two in her cradle, but will happily sleep lying on someone, and of course keeping the girls off her is a hassle too!

I am still expressing and bottlefeeding her, she doesnt like the breast at all. The MCHN wants me to go to an all day BF clinic, where the hell am I supposed to find the time with the kids on holidays?? Also, have been told that I have to lie down in the afternoons to increase milk supply, something about being on my feet all the time, dont really understand that one!

DH is on holidays this week so he has been doing the night time feeds, which she decided to drink pretty much non stop last night. Not sure how I will cope next week when he goes back to work and its all up to me!

My sister is coming to look after her next Tuesday for a couple of hours, first time I have left Hayley, very weird feeling!

Will try to keep up in here!

Dinky - how awesome of your DH to do the night time feeds! What a good man. It's interesting what the nurse said about being on your feet all day affecting your milk supply? Sounds odd to me too! It would be good for you to go to the BF clinic, but, like you say, how on earth do you do that? Would it be easier to do after the holidays? That reminds me, I have to call and book myself in for the day-stay clinic today. Hopefully i won't get in straight away because I am still not up for a long drive on my own yet. The clinic is over the other side of Geelong and I would rather save long trips for at least 4 weeks after the c-section!

Gabby has been heaps better today. After a couple of hours of being wide awake and snacking on the boob, she finally drifted off and has been asleep for about an hour and a half now. She just grizzled a little then but it sounds like she has gone back to sleep. Still, at least she is getting some sleep today!! I went nuts as soon as she was down. Got the dishes done, bottles and dummies sterilised, dog bathed, me showered, 2 loads of washing - washed and hung up. It feels heaps better!

Deb, I hope that you guy's have a better day today. The bf does get better too. I remember days with Noah when it seemed all I did was feed him, very draining on your body too.

Dinky, how is little Hayley going? Sounds like you are having the same problem with your girls as I am having with my boys -not leaving bub alone. In the end it only makes it harder for us because all bub wants to do is be nursed. I am alot tougher on them this time after Noah, he turned into a nightmare.

Colleen, bugger about James but at least you now know what his problem is, yay for getting some help through Medicare too.

Sarah, goos to hear that you know for sure what is wrong with Zander -well not good but ykwim. Hopefully the gripe water works for him. I don't blame him for not liking it, the stuff tastes disgusting.

I had Tehya back at the Dr's yesterday, she has the gastro back and has a stuffed up nose. Poor chook. Had to get some Fess for her. I was laying in bed with her yest. morning just watching her, she could barely breathe it was like someone was suffocating her the way she was struggling, very scary. I ended up laying her on one of our pillows with a nappy over it (for spews) and put her to sleep on her belly. Worked well because she wasn't choking on mucous. She did a huge projectile spew last night, just missed my face, she did one the night before too but I missed it, it went all over Joel, down the leg of his shorts nad all, should have seen him jump up and run for the shower :)

She seems abit better today, although is protesting sleep atm. I gave her a bath last night around 8pm and she was fed and in bed by 9pm and slept til 1.30am had a poo and a feed and asleep again til 4.30am and up just after 7am so a pretty good night for us. Might have to continue this night time bath.

Awww poor Joel getting spewed on, Trish! Hey, that could be a cure for any kids that are reluctant to bathe - just get a baby to spew on them! I hope Tehya starts feeling better. I would be terrified if Gabby was breathing that way too! I am with you on the night time bath. I think it wears them out so that they sleep really well. We are only doing it every second night now that Gabby's stump is out but it's definitely easier to get her to drift off after she has been wriggling around in the bath. She's not screaming as much either so hopefully she will become our little water baby before we know it! If she is anything like me, she will love being nude every chance she gets (when I was a kid that is... now it's all just too scary!! LOL).

Haven't heard from Fi but, by the sounds of things back in the April thread, things have come to a stand-still for her and Kayla. Poor chooks!

Sounds like Gabby is awake. Ah well, it was good while it lasted!

Deb - YAY for Gabby being a good girl! Doesnt it feel amazing when you manage to get so much done in such a short time! DH has been brilliant, although he is still in bed now and I am up with all the girls! I think I will try to book in for the BF clinic once the girls go back to school, but of course I need to wait until after next week when my Dad goes back to the oncologist, just to make sure that he is still available to look after them while I am away! I have been driving since 8 days post op, OB told me that it was okay, weird how things change!

I have a huge list of things to do, but thankfully one of my GF's decided to give me her services as a house cleaner twice a week for the next 10w, so I am supposed to rest! HA! But its lovely not having to do all the horrible things like bathrooms! She is an angel!

Trish - Hayley is doing well, but just about to wake for another feed, so I am dashing this off as she is sooking and trying to wake up. Poor Tehya, I hope that she is doing better today. Hayley seems to have a slight cold too, but hopefully it will clear before I take her back to the paediatrician next week for her check up! LOL@ Joel, dont you just love it! Hayley spewed a tiny bit on Shannen and she handed her over real quick so that she could change! I am really trying to limit the holds, thankfully went shopping and got them new games, so they are playing them now and ignoring Hayley, didnt think it would take much and Hayley is sleeping nicely.

Okay better go and get organised again, time just seems to fly in between feeds! I have my feet up at the computer, does that count as resting??? LOL!

Deb, what do you use to bath her in at night? I am using the Johnson & Johnson Bedtime bath - smells divine too. Really seams to relax her, great for your own bath too :)

Dinky, funny how fast they loose interest hey, wait til she's older and getting into their stuff and they will truely have had enough. I must admit the size of Tehyas spew I would have showered after it too, it was like a shower as it was. How nice of you GF to do that for you. The other day I was talking to MIL and she was saying how it would be a nice thing to get someone a cleaner in when they have their baby - HELLO what about me, didn't I just give birth to her grand daughter???? She didn't evven help me hang out the washing and she was out the back watching me do it.

Well, we are back to being cruisey baby again. Yesterday she must have just had a bit of wind or something. Phew! She is asleep in the pram right now. She didn't fully wake up until 1:30pm so she had a good 3 hour sleep!

Trish - for a while I was using tea-tree oil in Gabby's bath because of the staff infection but once that cleared up, I just put some baby oil in there. The midwife told me not to use anything except oil 4 now?? I have got some of that bedtime bath tho. I might try it tonight. If it wasn't any good for babies, they wouldn't be able to sell it, right?

Dinky - I have felt ok to drive for quite some time but have only gone on a few short trips. Actually, only 2. Once to the supermarket by myself and the other when I drove home from a party the other night. I have been taking it easy because so many people said that you can't drive for 6 weeks after a c-section but, honestly, I don't feel like my braking reflex was affected at all. Weird huh? You are right - it is amazing what you can get done when you know your time is limited! There is no way I would have got all that housework done before Gabby came along so quickly. Nothing like a bit of incentive to help you stay organised, hey?

OMG... just put another pic of Gabby on her site and her hair looks like it is getting lighter. She's gonna be a little Nobba after all! LOL

Deb, thanks for the comments on Tehya and Noahs pic. I am trying to get a really nice ine of the 2 of them. And Yep on the bedtime bath designed for bubs so it should be safe, it's made by J and J so atleast it has a good name behind it.

It's so hard to take nice pictures of kids - especially babies, hey Trish? That's the beauty of digital cameras I guess. We can take 100's of photos and it doesn't matter if only 1 or 2 are half decent ones ;)

Can you believe Gabby is down for yet another nap. She must have completely drained my boobs because I could barely express 10mls from both boobs. I think it is going to be a while before I can get the storage thing going!

Tehya has been down on and off for most of the day too. And I even managed to get them both down at the same time again for abit. My right boob is blocked again, I think it's because she didn't feed as much last night or today really. I try feeding her from it and it still hasn't cleared. Damn it, Even hurts to cuddle her.

Not much happening here... bub has been pretty good, infact I think she is getting soooo much better. It's amazing what a little training can do :)

Deb, sounds as tho poor little Gabby had a belly ache or something yesterday. I'm sure your milk supply will increase as Gabby's needs increase... are you drinking loads of water? I've never had a prob with my supply... in fact, I have the opposite prob... to much milk, they lose suction and get too much air. So far Violet is coping well, but Emily had a bit of trouble with it... again the breast feeding Day-stay helped heaps when we were going through this prob.

Trish, your poor baby girl! I would be so paranoid about her breathing (as I am sure you are) sounds horrible! I hope your bb clars up asap! You don't want it gatting any worse. BTW, congrats on getting to the next tread, it's amazing how fast time flies with a baby!

Sarah, I am glad that your little man finally has a diagnosis that can now be dealt with. I hope things get better there.

Trish - ouchies on the sore boob! I hope it clears up soon.

Tanya - sounds like little Violet is going great guns. You are right, Gabby must have had a tummy ache. Either that or it was just a "build up supply" day. Mum said we would all go through that every couple of weeks when we were just newborns. She pretty much told me to just go with the flow and relax because everything settles down again pretty much the next day.

Colleen - sounds like a plan doing absolutely nothing but rest tomorrow. Good on you! And YAY 4 you that Luke loves his sleep. I bet it will be a pain when he is a teenager tho! But, then, most teenagers are painful at the best of times, hey??

Another grrreat night last night. This time she slept for 7 hours!! 8-[ She had another nap from about 6-9pm. I gave her a small feed, a bath (used the bedtime bath stuff, Trish - it DOES smell divine!) then a bottle and she zonked it. I didn't get up to her until 6am which is perfect because that's when Neil gets up and starts making noises getting ready for work. I fed her for an hour then she went back down for another 3 hours. I slept until 9am, had a shower then a friend came to visit. Gabby got up at 10am, had a feed and a play then zonked it again! She's now down for hopefully another couple of hours. It's brilliant! Remind me of this when I have another horrible day, LOL. Maybe all that sleep I had whilst preggers trained her right up?? Who knows. Either way, I am stoked for now and have heaps of energy so I may even go for another walk this afternoon.

The friend tha came over found a porta cot in the op shop yesterday and she only paid $5 for it! We set it up and, apart from being a little grubby, it's in pretty good nick! What a bargain! And now I don't have to worry about buying one. I think my step sister was going to give me one but that's still good because one of them can permenantly live at Mum's!

Hmm.... I was hoping that Fi or Kayla or Nat would be joining us soon... they must be going nuts with anticipation!

Oh... just remembered something funny that Neil did on Monday while Gabby had a bad day.
While I was out here checking for advice in the breastfeeding forum, he sat with her inside. When I went back in, they weren't in the loungeroom so I had a look in the nursery.
He had Gabby on the change table. He had undone alllll of her buttons on her jumpsuit and was opening a packet of ear plugs. When I asked what he was doing, he proceeded to shove the ear-plugs up his nose!!! "She did a poo" he said. LOL
Now, my DH has no ever changed a nappy in his life so he has no idea at all. So, I slowly coached him on how it was done (mind you, we are just using disposables!). He didn't even know how to undo the nappy to take it off!
Still, I admire the fact that he was giving it a go. I kind of wish I hadn't come in so early so he could have felt comfortable to figure it out himself. Uno? Rather than me telling him what to do and him worry about stuffing up. Still, I am proud of him because I know he has an aversion to poo (thus the ear plugs.... God, I can't stop laughing about that!! LOL).

That is a story for her 21st Deb!! LOL.
I can just see Neil with ear plugs in his nose holes.

Believe me - I wish I was here too, but I guess I am doing it hard for some reason. Maybe I had every baby on time or early in a previous life??
Its interesting - I've heard people say that premmie babies are generally people who can't finish something off. You know - because they weren't able to complete pregnancy, its something that travels with them through life?

I wonder if Spud will be perpetually late!!! Late for school, late for work, late for wedding, late for kiddies birth. The mind boggles!

Deb, that porta cot sounds great. My bassinet was bought cheaply from a market and does its job well. I am jealous of your 7 hour sleeps, the best I get is 4.5 hours.

I have decided that Charlotte isn't getting enough sleep so she is down for her second sleep for the day now. She isn't sleeping quite as well as other days but we had a lovely non-crying time this morning. I love it when she is awake and not sad.

Deb, LOL at Neil and the ear plugs. Funny how men are about the smell of baby's poo when theirs is way worse. Good to hear that you had another good night, Gabby sleeps fantastic.

Boob has cleared up thankfully. Tehya and I had a long bath together last night with the bedtime bath stuff. She had her boob and was asleep just after 9pm until 2.20am, had another feed and woke again around 5ish poo and boob and back to sleep til around 8.15am. She has slept most of the day too, just had her 2nd feed since getting up this morning.

I have a house inspection tomorrow so I have spent the better part of the morning tiding up the house with mums help (thanks mum). Took Tehya to get weighed again today and she was 4.26kgs (she was 4.22kg last week) she is 57cm long so she has grown 1cm and her head has grown 1 cm too it's now 37.5cm. She hasn't put on heaps of weight but she's still gaining nicely. She is in the 90th centile for length and just below it for weight and head circ. looks like I've got another tall one :)

Wow Trish, looks like Tehya is going to be tall like Lily is. I think she's about 65-66cms and she's only 4mths and when I was a bub it took me 7 months to get to that length!

Fi - that is an interesting theory about Spud being late for everything because he/she is late for his/her birth. Maybe ring up a few people that you are know that are late for everything and find out if they were overdue?? LOL I have a friend who is constantly late (she used to live across the road from the bus stop that took me 10 minutes to walk to and she always missed the bus!!). I bet she was overdue!

Trish - good to hear your boob is feeling better and that Tehya's growth is doing well. I can't wait until the 14th to see how Gabby is doing. Urrgh @ the house inspection. The joys of renting, hey? How nice of your Mum to help you out tho. God help me if I had a house inspection now! Mind you, if we were renting, we would have a fully-functional kitchen right now, LOL.

Maryann - 4.5 hours sleep is still pretty good but I know that i am pretty lucky. I am trying not to get used to the sleep too much because I know how quickly everything can change with a baby! I hope Charlotte got a better sleep today. Like they say, sleep promotes sleep so if they have good naps during the day, they sleep better at night. Gabby is down for her second nap this morning. She zonks it after an hour of feeding, burping and changing nappy. I can't believe I was so stressed on Monday!!

Tegan - I should have taken a photo of Neil with the ear plugs, hey? Or, better still, taken in the video camera. I am sure there will be another opportunity, hehe. Wow @ Lily being so tall! Isn't it cool to compare your growth to hers? Mum gave me my infant welfare book a couple of weeks ago to do comparisons. So far I was a little taller than Gabby... about 2cms and I was 8oz heavier at birth too.

I think I slept with too many pillows last night! My neck is a little sore. Hopefully it goes away otherwise I may just have to give Lauren a call and tell her to bring her massage table. No point in having a sister who is fully qualified to do massage if I don't put her to good use, hey??
