Kimberley does not mind Alexander at all. When i am feeding him she says baby juice and sits next to us. She can even say Alex. I did worry at first as she took no notice in the hospital but has done since we have been home.

For the life of me i can not get Alexander to wind for me other than out of his bum. They have said he needs to feed more as is has lost weight not sure how i am going to get more milk into him. He is on about 40mls a feed has done 50 before.
He sleeps well during the day goes 4-5 hrs between feeds but at night he wakes after 3 hrs. Kimberley was just the same.
Got the midwife coming tomorrow again so hopefully he has out some weight on.
Thanks Deb for the tip re the staff infection, it`s seems like it`s quite common amongst newborns.

Lesley - Don`t blame yourself for not being able to BF, sometimes things don`t go as we plan them to.

Well what an eventful few days we`ve had here, hence why I haven`t posted for a few days. Mark came down with a flu towards end of last week and he`s still trying to get rid of it, then Matthew came down with it on Saturday and our nights have been absolutely shocking, to the point where I`m getting up to him at least every 30 minutes. Poor little man can`t breath he`s so blocked up, sneezing, coughing, watery red eyes and has been bringing up mucus for the last couple of days, took him to the Dr yesterday as we were really worried about him as he also wasn`t feeding like he was and wet nappies were down compared to normal. Dr put him onto antibiotics which will help both his staff infection and flu, I didn`t want him started on antibiotics so early but don`t have too many options when he`s not well. Dr said to bring him back today if he`s no better or if he gets any worse take him straight to Hospital. Today he is slightly better, feeding better then he has been in the last few days, poor little man is so tired but can`t get to sleep.
Mark`s got to the stage now where he`s sleeping through Matthew crying but poor Mummy is totally exhausted, hopefully he`ll be better very soon and we can get some better sleep patterns happening.

Michelle - good to hear that Kimberley approves of her little bro. Gotta be so cute to watch her watching him :) Hope that Alexander has put on some weight for you. As for the wind thing, I have tried all different ways with Gabby. Sometimes she will burp, others she won't. I just sit her up now and lightly pat and rub but don't keep going if nothing comes up after a few moments. I have found her to be more settled now that I am not so worried about it. Maybe he just prefers to push his windies out of his bum? How long did it take Kimberly to sleep longer than 3 hours? I hope you can get more sleep out of him soon!
Dee - OMG sounds like you guys have had a rotten time. That sucks that Matthew got Mark's cold! BM is meant to protect him from that! You must feel like a zombie. I hope he gets better soon (and Mark too cos he is no good to you while he is sick). It must be so scary. Gabby hasn't been sick yet and I dread the day she does get sick cos I will freak, I reckon! N E way, hope you can get some rest soon matey.
Dee - so sorry to hear about Mark and Matthew - I hope that you don't catch the flu yourself! Hopefully little Matthew will be well soon.
Leslie - great to see to see you and hope that Chole is going well. Try not to worry about giving up breastfeeding, whats best for you is best for Chole.
Michelle - hope that Alexanders wind goes away for you soon.
Debbie - I was told by the midwife yesterday if Alex does not wind and he seems happy then don't worry about it. I think i have found the problem with his sleeping at night as he is in our room everytime i stirs i wake up and think right you want feeding well that is not the case he will take a little them be asleep again. I watched myself nearly do it first thing i have to learn to let him cry for his feed. I was the same with Kimberley.

When Gabby was just a couple of weeks old, every time she cried I fed her. Any wonder I was so over it! The midwife said she was probably getting a sore tummy because she was getting so much fore-milk (she would only feed a little because she wasn't hungry).
Figuring out what they want is so hard sometimes but I am finding it a little easier as she gets older. Good to hear it can be just as difficult even with your second baby!
Dee - sounds like a tough time of things. Shane had a cold when we got back from hospital, and I was so pleased we didn't catch it too!! When we fly back to NZ in June, I'm sure I'll pick up something. I always seem to on planes. Hopefulyl Jenna will be OK - I'm getting her vacc's done 3 days before we go.
Michelle - we are only just learning that her first whimper doesn't mean she needs feeding at night. We take her into bed with us usually and let her whimper in there, she usually goes for at least another hour before she cracks it. Problem is, I dont sleep cause I'm listening to her. I'm sure I'll get better at this mummy thing!

I thought i would know better not to wake with this being my second child but no. Going to try tonight and not jump out of bed until he screams the house down.
One the plus side today he took nearly 60mls of milk in one feed so i am pleased if the midwife says anything tomorrow that upsets me again i will stop letting her in.
How long does a midwife come round for after you get home ??
Lyell Mc Midwifes come 3 or 4 times. Usually 3 ... I had 4 with lachlan cause I went home on the 2nd day.

Might be different with people that have had c-sects too. Just ask when you see her tomorrow, she will tell you.

We had a different midwife come today and she was happy with Alexander sleeping 4hrs at a time. Also he has put on 60grms i was so pleased.
He even woke ever 4 hrs last night also which was great.
We will be seeing the midwife again on Monday as they like to see two weight gains before they stop coming.
Oh, that's great Michelle! Good to hear he is putting on weight and waking more regularly. He just needed a bit more time to sort himself out! Sounds like that other midwife is heaps better!
We have had a horrible few days Alexander started wheezing and looked as if he had trouble breathing so Paul took him to the hospital to have him checked over as they said to take him if we where ever worried about him. They where very good as soon as Paul booked Alexander in they were out to see him the doctor stopped what she was doing and the paediatrician was down to see him. I sat at home thinking that the fluid had gone back to his little lungs. They were not gone long they tested everything on Alex. All it turns out to be is that he has reflux and the milk is not going down all the way and that is what is making him sound like he does all the time. I have to sit him up to feed him and go back on to the slower teat after the midwife said to use the fast one to get him to feed. Also if he does not want to finish his milk to not make him. I am just glad it was something like that.
Michelle - You look very lonely in here, we`ve all gone and deserted you with our new babies. Glad Alex is ok and the hospital checked him out thoroughly.
Sorry girls I just don`t have 5 minutes to even come and talk to you, one day I might :-k . When Matthew is asleep Mark seems to be on the net and when he`s awake well little man knows he`s got it over us and just loves his cuddles and time spent with him. I really miss talking to you all, I`m with you all in thought but just can`t do everything.
Mark and Matthew are both over there flu but yes you`ve guessed it I`ve now come down with it. After Matthew`s sickness it has really upset his routine at night now since it`s so cold I get up change his nappy then take him to bed with me to feed him and 9 times out of 10 it`s Mummy who falls asleep while Matthew is still feeding, once I wake up and realise he`s gone to sleep he goes back into his cradle. Matthew often gives us a hard time when it comes to us all going to bed, he`s far too knowing as he`ll cry, stop and listen and now he`ll even turn and look in our direction to see if we`re coming, he`s been doing a lot of things lately which I`m sure he shouldn`t be doing at such a young age.
Last week Matthew weighed 5.2kgs, so an increase of 900gms in 10 days, people are commenting on how big he is, I had a comment last week 'Is he only 2 weeks????", then I got "Your husband must be big".
As for my weight, I last weighted myself last week, so 2 weeks post birth and had lost 10kg so I`m now down to 61kg, not quite where I was pre pregnancy but I think I`m doing ok.
I did a few things last week and obviously over did it as I was very sore for the next couple of days.

Alex is finally back up to his birth weigh but the midwife still wants him to feed more now she says he should be on 80mls a feed i can just about get him to have 50 or 60mls.
Dee - Hope you don't get to sick with this flu. That is a good weight gain that Matthew is having. WTG on your weight loss.
Michelle - Thats great that Alex is back up to his Birh weight. How does the midwife expect you to get another 20 - 30mls down Alex, he`s only going to take what he wants and we can`t force food down their throats as we all know what happens if we do that. I think if he`s happy with what he`s getting don`t worry about it too much, Alex doesn`t want Mummy stressed out about how much he eats or doesn`t eat, he`ll soon catch up. I`ve just had a chance to look at Alex`s photos, they`re lovely andhe`s such a beautiful little boy.
Took Matthew for his hearing test, 4th time lucky and thankfully no interference this time, she couldn`t get over the brainactivity her machine was picking up from him. Have just given him a bath and yet another feed, this baby of mine does nothing but eat and poo LOL, he is now asleep.
I think Matthew`s routine is slowly coming back to what it was before he got the flu, he slept for 3 3/4 hours after each feed last night

I did get Alex to take extra milk last night but then he was sick over my nightshirt then again when he went to bed.
I think he now has a cold he did take 60mls of milk today but it was over an hour and that was only because he had not gone back to sleep.

Matthew loves his Baby Vivaldi CD that I use to play to him in utero, he was a little unsettled and didn`t want to sleep even though he seemed tired, so I put the CD on for him and he listened and went to sleep.
Not much happening here, I just wish this flu of mine would go away.

We had CYH come and do all the checks on Alex today he had his second hearing test and has now passed. He has put on 100grms over 3 days. They still want him to feed every 3 hrs i did try and tell her when i wake to do that he takes less than if i waited the 4hrs. I would understand if he put on something like 20 - 50grms i thought he did very well with putting on the 100grms.
She also said to change his milk so he is less sick with reflux to A.R milk. Alex is only a little sick and that is only when i try and get him to take more milk like they want him to.
It has upset me so much with having to try and get him to feed more i am trying so hard and i can't do much more than i am already doing.
Dee - Hope everything is going well with Matthew.
Hey Michelle, if you do use the AR formula or a thickener in normal formula make sure you don't heat it up. I found out the hard way!! The thickening agent works when it's heated, so once it hits their tummy it expands & sits in there heavier, hence less vomiting. So if you heat the bottle it's already thickened when it hits their tummy so doesn't work properly.

Do you have to make yours up with cold water ?
I make up 4 feeds in advance and put them in the fridge and heat them up when Alex needs feeding.
I do have to see what the doctor says to do tomorrow. The thing is Alex is only a little sick and not after every feed.
So does Zander drink his formula cold, Sarah? I only ask because Gabby won't drink her bottle unless it is warmed up. I try no to warm it too much. I guess, tho, she is used to BM which would be at least body temp. so cold liquid might seem funny to her. Just curious!
Good to hear that Alex is going better, Michelle. You are right - you can't do much more than what you already are. You are doing a fantastic job. He is putting on weight and is healthy so that's what matters :)
Dee - that's sooo cute that Matthew needs his music to sleep :) Maybe he will be musical when he gets older?

Hi Juliette welcome to this little group. Congratulations on the birth of Hannah Roisin.
We had our 2 weeks check up at the doctors today and he is very happy on how Alexander is doing. He said i can change his milk if i want but does not see any real reason to as Alexander is only ever a little sick. He thinks Alexander has a little cold but that should clear up on it's own. We have to go back next Friday as the doctor wants to weigh him again.

Michelle - It sounds like Alex is going along ok. Bugger about him having a cold though, hopefully it`ll be gone soon.
Matthew was down for 5 hours last night, wasn`t asleep all that time probably was for 4.5hrs but it`s the first time he`s gone over 4 1/4 hours, it went downhill from then, up at 2am and wasn`t down again until 4.30am, he was starting to go to sleep then got the nasty hicups for 30 minutes so after that time he was WIDE awake and ready to play.
It`s been really cold here today and my flu still hasn`t improved, I actually feel worse today then yesterday and Mark seems to be getting his flu back I hope Matthew`s doesn`t come back.

Sorry girls, didn't explain properly 8-[ Just cooled boiled water, like room temperature, not cold cold. I just fill the bottles with water & leave them on the kitchen bench then add the formula when it's time. Now that we are back on normal formula I still do the same thing with the water, but heat it up a little before adding the formula.
Hi Juliette - welcome to the thread. I expect there will be an influx soonish with all the BB babies that have been born lately.
Dee - sorry to hear that you've been ill. I do hope that the guys don't get it again. I expect it would be really cold for you guys in the winter?

Alex finally took 60mls for his last 2 feeds but then he was sick both times. Poor little thing just wants a cuddle he will not settle in his bed. He is falling asleep in my arms and as soon as i put him to bed he gets upset.
Michelle, you might've said already, but have you tried raising his bed head? I found that if Alexzander is laid flat he won't settle & just cries, but if he is on an incline he is pretty good....

Alex's head is raised just a little.
Trouble is he wants feeding again already he last feed at 7.30p.m and threw most of it up. I am going to try and leave him until he should feed again next then try him back in his bed. I did try giving him a dummy but he just does not like them.
That's a shame that he doesn't like his dummy, cos they are supposed to help reflux bubs - I was told it works like chewing gum getting the stomach acids to work so the food is digested faster. Zander sometimes wants his next bottle earlier if he has had a big chuck & I usually give it to him when he wants it - not sure if I should wait, but he is adamant he wants it IYKWIM!
I gave in and got Alex a bottle he too 20mls and is now asleep in his bed.
Just glad this little bit has stayed down this time.
What kind of dummy do you use ??

Hi Everyone! It's kinda late (early?).....am up with Hannah as usual. She's a real night owl. Sleeps like an angel during the day, and is a little devil all night.
Have just spent 1 hr 20 mins feeding her (my milk was really slow coming in, and I'm still not sure it's adequate for her). Anyhow, she's not in the least bit sleepy. Have tried everything - burping, massage, changed nappy, beethoven, rocking her bassinette, walking around the house with the pram. Am a walking zombie and at my wits end!!! This is my third night at home with her, and I'm finding it really full on. I didn't have a single night in hospital where they didn't have to take her to the nursery and away from me. Had the baby blues something shocking. Poor kid ended up covered in tears and snot most nights (mine). Pretty picture.
I have her in the sling now with a dummy....she's still managing an ear peircing scream...and I have no idea what to try next! I wonder if she's hungry due to insufficient milk supply, or if it's just wind.
Has anyone tried infacol for wind? Any idea if it works?
Anyhow....that's where I'm at. This whole motherhood thing is much trickier than it looks. I can't help but wonder if I'm up to the task.
Oh well...we'll take it one day at a time.

I thought i was the only one up this late.
I used infacol with Kimberley and it worked. Give it a try and see what happens.
Really hope you are able to get some sleep at night soon.
Not sure what else you can do to get Hannah to sleep.
The only other thing i would say try is formula milk if you don't think you have enough milk for Hannah. That could help.
You are doing a good job and you are a great mother.
Hope you are resting during the day when Hannah is asleep.
I should really go and see if Kimberley has fallen back alseep in our bed and if i can get her back into her own. I hate nights like this when one hour it's Alex awake then the next it's Kimberley i guess it's the joy of having two kids now. Also i think i am getting a sore throat.
