    6 Week Post Natal Checkup

Okay girls, I`ve just made my 6 weekly post natal check up, but they could only fit me in on 1st July (my Birthday) so I`ll be 8 1/2 weeks post natally.

Just wanted to know what can I expect from my check up, I have no idea, the clinic nurse did mention I`ll have a pap smear I hadn`t even thought of that, is it routine?

I think it is routine.....I had one too. I guess the things that they go through with you are different depending upon whether you had a vaginal birth or caesarean.........

Because I had the emergency c/s, the OB basically checked out the scar etc, felt the uterus (externally) and did the pap smear........I can't remember too much else about the appt to be honest!

I don't think mine was that exciting, took me ages to go actually hahaha. I didn't have a pap smear cause I had one just before falling pregnant, so was within a year of having one, but doctor felt to see how the uterus was going and just asked me some basic general questions as to how I was feeling etc.

Mine was nice: my OB admired Olivia, asked me how I was dealing with feeding etc, asked me how I felt emotionally, asked me how I felt physically, covered off how I had felt in general about the birth (vaginal, no drugs, Olivia had shoulder distocia & got stuck, which I hadn't even been aware of!).

He also asked me about sex/contraception etc. I didn't have a pap smear there and then as I was only just 6 weeks post natal adn was still bleeding a small amount, but he booked me in for one a month later.

Weighed me, took my BP etc as well, and from memory offered to check my boobs but I declined as I was too scared I would squirt breastmilk all over him!

    Ditto all the above.

My ob reckons it is only really to see if you are depressed!

I reckon get the pap smear done if you are comfortable with that - I was a lot more comfortable with my ob doing the pap rather than some other gp as he had already "been there, seen that" 6 weeks earlier!

Then you don't have to psyche yourself up to have one later!!

Up to you of course - just my 20c worth!

Best wishes - hope you are enjoying being a mum!!

    Yup same as everyone else!

You might want to book Matthew in for his needles at the same time, cos they are due at 8weeks/2months that way you only have to go to the Drs once.

My 6 weeks was pretty much the same. Just checked my stitches site (nice!). Told me I dealt with birth/labour incrediably well which I thought was lovely, he didn't have to at all.

Didn't do a smear, mine isn't due until January next year so I'll go to my gp for that.

He asked if I need a prescription for the pill and I honestly hadn't thought about it then so didn't know what to say! So I said no.

I had a 2 week post natal check and i also have another one at 6 weeks to have a pap smear done.
Not sure why they do the 2 weeks one as it will be the same again at 6 weeks.

ditto on all of the above

just a word re pap smears tho - if you are due get it done at your 6wk check up, i had my 6wk check up in october and was due for smear in april this year, ob asked if i wanted it done and for some stupid reason i said no LOL, so i had to go off and get it done - last week actually nice. kicking myself i didn't get it over and done with lol.

oh also i asked ob if i had another one how long should i wait, as i am 36 and will be 37 in october this year, he said within 12mths, hmmmm maybe he just wants more money lol. we will see.

    Thanks Girls

Sarah - That`s a good idea about getting Matthew`s needles done at the same time but since I`m going to my OB I don`t think he gives bubs their needles so it would be another trip to my GP.

I had my last smear before TTC it would have been about June last year but if OB wants to do another one I`ll let him, just gets it out of the way. A lovely Birthday present LOL.

Yep - same as the others, but I booked a double appt, and she got to meet jenna as well and do all her checks (hips, heart, fontinel, eyes etc). This was great as she was my shared care dr. She just carried her around and let me have my hands to myself!!! And then when she did the pap smear, we just put Jenna on the ground on a nappy.
I had mine at 3weeks, but that was because I had a cracked nipple that I needed to get checked out. As it was she took swabs of that and gave me the contact details of a specialist lactation GP if I needed it.
Definitly a good idea to meet your GP asap I think. We have a return visit next week for the immunisations.

Just a question most of you have mentioned going to your OB for your 6 week check up. I'm having my baby through the midwife clinic at the hospital. Would my check up be with them or with my GP? All my appts have been with the midwives, not shared GP care.
