    UTI/Thrush - what's the difference?

i've never had either so not sure what i have.....for the last 4 days i've been extremely itchy and it burns if i scratch (sorry TMI!) and burns when i pee - im on a long course of AB's so im leaning toward thrush as ive read AB's can increase the chances of getting thrush but i have no discharge or anything and it is very very dry down there and just a burny itchy feeling all the time

    any advice would be great

    TIA

I found this while googling it for you:

Yeast infections and bladder infection differ in terms of location. For instance, yeast infections affect the vagina while bladder infections affect the bladder and urethra. Other differences deal with symptoms. Yeast infection can cause itching while urinary tract infections cause burning sensation and frequency of urination. Both can be the result of bad hygiene and intercourse.
Actually, the difference between them is that one is caused by Candida which is a yeast that lives in the body, usually in the background and then overgrows to cause yeast infections such as thrush, whilst bladder infections are caused by bacteria. Yeast infections ARE NOT caused by bad hygiene OR by intercouse, and the only bladder infection which CAN be caused by intercourse is Cystitis. It is said that cranberry juice can help prevent Cystitis although there is currently no scientific or medical proof.

Thrush is a fungal infection usually in the vagina or groin area. It's common when taking ab as all the "good" bacteria down ther get killed off leaving room for a fungal infection to take over. Itching and burning are common. the discharge associated with thrush is kinda like cottage cheese, a bit lumpy or it can be quite dry.
A UTI is a urinary tract infection caused by bacteria. It's often called "honey moon disease" as it can result after lots of sex for example. Sometimes you can flush out the bacteria with lots of water but usually you'll need a course of ab to fix it. If you have a fever and burning when you do a pee and feeling like you need to pee all the time and only managing a dribble or nothing at all it's most likely to be a UTI.
I think what you have is thrush. You can get over the counter treatments for it. There is a good one canesten make which has internal pessary with a cream to soothe the outside itching.
If you are in doubt or worried, it's worth getting your GP to check it out for you.

Thanks for that Jodie - i went to my chemist and she seems to think its thrush and not a uti so im now using the Canestan 6 day treatment - she advised because im on a long term dose of antibiotics i should be taking inner health plus as well so fingers crossed it all helps she said the burning when i wee is probably more to do with the fact that ive been scratching myself silly cause it doesnt actually hurt to go to the loo it just stings when it gets on the bit ive been scratching (hehe sorry TMI!)

    thanks again for the reply
