    Unhappy second D & C

i found out 10 days ago i miscarried at 12 weeks, although the sac had not grown since 6w 3d. I had a D & C done 6 days ago. I am still heavily bleeding and heavily cramping, so i rang my gyno this morning and he told me to come in- only to find out it was a locum as my doc is on holidays. He did an U/S and it showed that i still had part of a sac in my uterus, now he says i will probably have to go for another d&c on wed(2 days), and that i now have an infection due to the dead tissue- as he so nicely put it. I am so confused as to why they didn't get it all n why i should have to go through this again, my partner n i thought this was over n now time to try to move forward to start again. Should i have to pay for the 2nd D&C??? It's not my fault they left some sac behind- is this normal??? I have so many questions and dont know where to begin. Has this happened to anyone else?

I am so sorry for your loss, and for what you're going through now. When I misscarried at 5 weeks, my body miscarried naturally, which took about 5 days. I'm sorry I can't answer your questions though, but I really hope someone can.

    Welcome to BellyBelly BTW.

Hi Lozzy, I am very sorry for your loss

I lost my little boy at 21 weeks and had to have 2 curettes to clean out the retained placenta. I also had a very bad infection that required 7 weeks of antibiotics to cure.

My doctor and hospital was covered by my health insurance but I refused to pay for the anesthetic second time round - other than what medicare and health insurance covered that is. So I wrote him a letter thanking him for taking care of me during the procedure but felt I should not have to pay the gap due to Dr **** incompetence. The gap was close to $400 so I told him to send the bill to my OB ! It must have worked as I have not received a reminder to pay as yet and that was 6 months ago.

I know these things can happen but it just adds salt to our already badly bleeding wounds and doctors should be more careful considering the potential risk. My OB used a camera second time around to ensure he got it all out.

I wish you all the best and I pray that your second D&C goes smoothly.

My story is a little long and sad so i wont go into all that but just wanted to let you know that i had to have two D & C's...

WHile this is so very upsetting and easy to think that the Doc didnt do a good job its also good to keep in mind that D & C's are dangerious and can cause A LOT of problems including infertility....

Not telling you this to scare you its so you know that if the Doc missed some it was probably better than him going to hard and doing too much.... whilst in all your hurt and anger over the M/C if you want to choose him to be ****ed off at then thats ok too! I got a new OB after all my hassles and i still think the old one is the biggest SOB i have ever meet...

Also you should know that i am a RN so i DO NOT often defend Doc's...but in this case maybe just have the 2nd one and maybe dont pay....i wasnt charged for my 2nd even tho it was a sunday and i had to spend the night in hospital. THink that the OB knew i wouldnt pay for anything from him!

You can always choose to see if your body "deals" with it.... But the infection is probably from the intervention rather then the POC.....

Hope this helps and if you want to PM me thats fine!

    Hi Lozzy,
I'm so sorry for your loss. It's really dissappointing that you have to go for a second D&C. I hope that it goes well this time.
You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Lozzy. I am so sorry for your loss. Nothing is more heartbreaking than losing a baby. To have medical complications just adds to all the hurt and confusion.
I am very experienced with 'retained product" as they like to put it. I have had 4 m/cs and had retianed product with 3 of them, requiring 2 x D&Cs with 2 of them.
Several of the surgeries were done by different drs so although i was angry after the first time i had to go back to surgery, I have now realised, that it has likely been an issue with my body not wanting to let go than any fault of the drs.
As previously mentioned, the Drs cannot be to aggressive in a D&C for fear of damaging your uterus. Sometimes it is just bad luck to have some remain.
With my most recent m/c. my Dr did an u/s at the time of first sx and thought she had it all out. 1 week later I knew something was wrong and confirmed a bit of placenta still remained. We werenot keen for more surgery given i have had far to many D&Cs over the yrs. Tried misoprotol ( prostaglandin tablet) which is inserted into vagina daily for few days. acts to contract your uterus and hopefully expel the retained product . Works well for some people but sadly for me just made me really sick and very painful. Product stayed firmly attached so went back for more sx bu my Dr did it with u/s guidance and hysteroscopy( camera into uterus) so she could just visualise and grab that last piece without traumatising the rest of my uterus.
Hoping you can get this sorted out quickly. I know how truly awful it is to have things drag on so badly when all you want is your baby back alive and well.
