    Thyroid problems

My friend has just found out she's pregnant (about 6 weeks), she has had some intermittent heavy bleeding etc - not a good start. She has now been told that she has a thyroid problem which means she should terminate.
I haven't really had a chance to talk to her properly so I don't really have the full picture but I wondered if anyone had any experience with this?
She has a history of addiction which she has overcome and I sometimes wonder if that might cloud the view of her doctor.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

i have had a 10 year history of thyroid problems and unless its thyroid cancer it is actually quite controllable and you can be pregnant and taking medication to control it whilst being pregnant, you just need to be monitored regularly.i get checked every 8 weeks and i have have had radiocative iodine(like chemo) and a full removal of thyroid, she needs a referral from her gp to see a endocrinologist, but terminating is the 1st ive heard of it,if she really overactive,ie sped up metabolism, weight loss etc there is a risk of miscarriage but if you get onto it quick and get medicated theres a minimal risk..
hope ive been some help, also might be worth contacting the thryoid foundation australia, they are a great source of help
    Cheers Bon

I agree, advise her to get a second opinion, get help from the thyroid foundation - they know more than some doctors!

I have an under active thyroid that was not treated (as we didn't know) in my first pregnancy & I have a healthy little 3 year old man I was treated through my second pregnancy & I have a 3 month old baby girl as a result.

    Definitely get a second opinion.
