I'm not going to have internet access for the next week and then we're going on holidays for two weeks, so i have to submit this tonight / early tomorrow. Just hoping for any advice or ideas! Also I am applying for midwifery - in case you couldn't guess!!
Explain why you chose to apply for the course(s) for which you are applying.
Since experiencing pregnancy, labour and childbirth for the first time, I have fallen in love.
I had such an empowering birthing experience that I am now compelled to work in the field with professionals who deliver such high standards of care during pregnancy, birth and the post-partum period. I thoroughly enjoyed reading, researching and asking my antenatal midwife many questions. I became obsessed with birth; this knowledge ensured I was informed and in control of my labour experience. My son was born into the hands of an obviously inspired and devoted midwife, who gave me extraordinary care in labour; and I aspire to give that same level of care and support to other pregnant women.
I have always been interested in anatomy and physiology, as well as fascinated by pregnancy. I am now drawn to pregnant women to discuss ideas and choices regarding childbirth. I want to educate women, to give them a voice, and to strengthen their belief in their bodies. I want to provide a supporting role, and continuity of care to mothers and their families though this precious time. I want to be an ear to a new mother that needs to debrief her child?s birth. I really, really care about being a positive part of any woman?s pregnancy, labour and birth experience.
After months of spending my spare time watching birthing videos, reading recommended texts and, most recently, watching ?The Business of Being Born? I am feeling even more inspired and I know that becoming a midwife will be an extraordinarily worthwhile and satisfactory career.
This section is designed for you to let the course(s) for which you are applying know about any past or current academic performance that may influence your competitiveness for selection. Outline as precisely as possible the exact circumstances (good or bad) and how they affected your academic performance. If the circumstances adversely impacted your performance (e.g. illness, disability, reasons why the course may have been unsuitable) you may need to attach a certificate from a relevant practitioner (e.g., a medical or psychological report) in support of your statement.
I finished secondary school one year earlier than most other graduates, and at seventeen years of age, I felt I was not ready to undertake tertiary study. My parents insisted that I enrol in University immediately after I graduated high school, despite my lack of interest in any particular field of study. This was also magnified by several personal factors, leading to my continued disinterested attitude and lack of motivation to study.
When I involuntarily enrolled in university in 2005, I was also made to move out of home, despite the fact that I had no means of financial support. On my fourth night as a live-in college resident, I was sexually assaulted, and this began a severe decline in my motivation to participate in the course at any level. Because of the assault; and its? effects on me mentally, I ended up in a very submissive sexual relationship where I was taken advantage of physically on many occasions. I became highly introverted, and felt extremely powerless, making me afraid to speak out. Because of this I never sought help, nor did I speak with any professionals about my situation or how I was feeling.
My grandmother, whom I was very close with, also passed away. Whilst this was not largely a surprise, it was a very difficult experience as I had not dealt with the death of a close family member before. It was the last thing I needed after a rough start to the year.
I requested a transfer to another course and faculty for a fresh start in semester two, as I was finally feeling more motivated and ready to concentrate harder on my studies. Three weeks into that semester, my parents separated. I don?t think I really need to elaborate on the pain of watching your parents? marriage fall apart, but suffice it to say, I lost all hope for my studies.
This section is for you to express information of a more general nature, e.g. summary of life-experiences, personal qualities and other reasons, not covered in a previous section, that are relevant for the course(s) to which you are applying.
The past few years have given me the opportunity to mature into a young woman, certainly broadening my life experiences and leading to avenues of self discovery and personal development. The pregnancy, labour and birth of my son, was an enlightening journey, and has given me so much passion for this career path. I am so thrilled and excited about returning to study (much unlike my seventeen year old self), and I possess an overwhelming desire to succeed.
In beginning my young family, I have established many goals and I am so inspired to be doing this not only for me, but for the little people that I love, and that are completely dependent on me. As a mother, I realise the level of impact I will have on forming a well rounded child, and I hope that in completing this course I can demonstrate to him that through adversity, you can find your passion, and that you don?t necessarily have to give up on your dreams.
I need to add some more to the last section, mostly personal qualities etc, that would be included in a resume, but that's not an issue for me, can do that no worries. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestion or anything.
