Considering going to uni - but didn't finish yr.12

I am considering applying to uni to do secondary teaching next year in 2010.

My question is....

I didn't finish year 12 and am wondering how you go about applying for uni when you don't have an ENTER score.

Do I need to finish yr.12 before I can apply or as it was 8 years ago that I was in yr,12 can I apply as a mature age student and what do I have to do from there?

Any advice would be appreciated....

Someone else on here should be able to help you out a bit more then I can, I think it depends on the uni you want to study at. I believe they all have different entry requirements. I'm pretty sure most of them would offer a sort of course they call a bridging or enabling course that you can do instead of doing yr 12,the one I did went for 1 semester. They may offer some sort of STAT test instead of the course. I personally found the enabling course really helpful, it helped me learn how to write essays etc the correct way and also helped me build my confidence before starting higher education.

After the age of 21 you can sit the STAT test to get in. As far as I know it doesn't matter what subjects. I work in HR at the local uni near me so don't know a lot about that part. Some subjects (like creative writing) do often require a portfolio though.

Look on some uni websites for some advice.

i am doing a bridging course rather then sitting the stat test
call the uni you are hoping to go to and go from there

You can apply for mature age entry, and sit the STAT, and you also may be able to write a PCA (Personal Competencies Assessment) essay to help further your chances/prove that you are capable of university study.
I did both of these (as I had only completed 2 yr 12 subjects when I was 17) and I had no probs getting into uni.
Bear in mind the STAT test is not something that you can 'really' study for. It just tests your competencies with comprehension, problem solving etc...

I did do year 12, but my TER was only 40! I hated school. My TER wasnt enough for uni so I had to wait until I was 20 to get in as a mature aged student.

Anyway, if you have been to TAFE they would probably look at that. Check with the uni you are intersted to see what kind of TAFE qualifications they accept. Some accept diplomas, but some also accept certificate 4. It depends on the uni and the degree you want to do. I've been to tafe but my tafe course has got nothing to do with the degree I'm doing. The uni just said as long as you can prove that you have the potetntial to be a good student then that really helps your chances. (I did IT and HR at TAFE and I'm doing Nursing at uni)

You could also do a personal statement. I got into uni this year (to a degree that requires a TER of like 83 or something) and I wrote a personal statement to get in. Basically, you just write about your reasons for wanting to do the course, any relevent experience you have (work and life) and all that sort of stuff. But your uni will give you some guidelines on what to include.
I also did STAT a lttle while ago. You can get example questions off the website of the people who run the STAT. Its all like problem solving and comprehension questions and you get given a ranking depending on how well you did compared to the other people who did the test.

Your uni will have all the info on applying as a mature aged student and you certainly do not need to have done year 12.
