elle - I did the test in 98. I think it's worth getting the previous years test. I studied for it and got into the course I wanted to. the foundation courses are great... anything to help you with understanding the requirements of university. I've just graduated from my degree - highly recommend that you start reading (anything and everything), and you might also want to read some books on speed reading etc.
I was in exactly your situation.. didn't like high school but was absolutely over the moon about going to uni as a mature aged student.
You may want to consider doing another university course in the meanwhile - I wouldn't go back and do year 12 again.. much better if you could do a year of arts - get used to writing essays, exams etc... Talk to one of the course coordinators for the degree you want to get in, and ask their advice on what's the other ways of getting into the course (ie transfering after doing a year of arts, or general science or whatever it is)
