Unfortunately, there is no direct career path for criminology. It is something that may be used to help provide insight for careers like social work, counselling, etc. Or it is a compulsory componant to become a police officer. I have studied some criminology as part of my law degree - it is very interesting, but like I said it is one of those things that are generally studied as part of a larger overall sutdy program. Like an arts degree, it is useful, but generally won't actually help you get a job. Does that make sense?
What area of work would you like to go into? That might be a better place to start, and then figure out how you can incorporate studying criminology into that.
I would really like to do something with forensics but going to Uni on campus is really not an option for me at the moment and not for quite a few years....
I also considered law as thats what I was going to do after school originally but life got in the way
I've just finished studying criminology - it's part of a syllabus of what I must study to gain a promotion at work (i'm a police officer)....
Otherwise, as its such a specialised field I would have rathered study something a bit more mainstream to keep job opportunities open - but it is fairly interesting all the same
Ladeeda - Have you considered doing a law degree or a legal studies degree with a major in criminology? Both of these degrees have very practical applications and do look good in a resume. Although I would say from my experience, that generally it isn't worth doing a full Law degree unless you intend to become a laywer or work in the legal industry - but like I said there are also legal studies degrees you can get, which still involve studying legal mechanisms, but more from a layman perspective and criminology fits really well into this study. Also both can be studied externally - I am currently finishing my law degree as a long distance external student.
