Another still trying to decide. Generally if I choose, it does not turn out to be the right thing. I tend to fall into business based careers. I am good with figures etc, but know that full blown accounting is not for me. Would love to own my own business one day (have had contractor ones in the past), but struggle for an idea. For now I am happy working with a small business where I do get to have some imput!

I cant tell you how relived i am to know that im not the only one who hasn't got a clue what im meant to be doing. What makes it worse is my 15 year old sister has the next 10 years mapped out and knows exactly what she wants to do and is very driven at achieving her goals....which is great for her but makes me feel like a bit of a looser...and being that im 30 next year i kind feel like i should have my life together....clearly thats not the case.....

I started by actually thinking about the kind of work environment I like working in and what I absolutely hate, based on past experience.

I think about my passions and also which jobs in the past I've liked the best. Then I think about what aspects of those jobs I liked the most.
NOT an office, couldnt sit at a desk all day...id go crazy!

Im finding this really hard, i dont know.....not something that involves repetitive tasks, something with a bit more interest behind it, all ive ever done is retail and hospitality and i dont want to do those again.
Im not a genius, so maths and science based things are out, so i wont be a helicopter pilot or an astronaut any time soon. Saying that im not stupid either, i want to challenge myself and do something that enables me to grow. I always joke that i should be a geologist, but im not nerdy enough. I love trying to understand how the earth was formed, like volcanoes and earth movements and all that stuff...but like i said, im just not scientific enough.

I like photography, i have a fancy DSLR camera and even have a portfolio from years ago. BUT im not really interested in doing portrait photography. I think my biggest block with that is that i totally think im not good enough, i hate showing people my photos to a point that i have stopped taking photos other that snaps of the kids cause DH kept showing them to people when they came over.

Nutrition has always interested me, having grown up being a bit obsessive about my weight and diet i kinda know it inside out and wonder if i could take it further.

I wanted to teach, when i left school, but didnt get the collage grades to get onto the teaching degree i wanted to do, that when i ended up doing english and history and dropping out after a year. but i dont really think i want to do that anymore, knowing more about the job and what it really entails as i have teacher friends.

I want to be able to be a bit picky with the hours i work, so i can be flexible around the children. I wouldnt mind studying something, doing a part time uni course while im at home with the kids now.

going to think about it some more. if anyone knows of a job for a geologist nutritional photographer let me know.

Thanks for the help...and kick up the backside!

    naturopathic nutrition and herbal medicine.

I don't know how much science is involved, but I suspect less than studying to be a dietician at uni.

My brother got into medicine the year before I wanted to get in. I wanted to be an ob/gyn.

So I did law instead. I now earn almost double him, and work half the hours.

    I know who's better off!

I kind of see career as a bucket list ie. what will I kick myself about if I don't try. I worked in corporate communications for a long time and although it's well paid and mentally challenging (a good thing), really, I don't think I'm going to be looking back on my life regretting I hadn't written another kickass communications plan that had smoothed the way for yet another software upgrade. Snore.

So. I took a break. AM taking a break. And working out what's important to me. I'd like my work to be worthwhile. So I'm going to have a career change into social policy. Now, the other thing that really turns me on is property. Which is slightly at odds with my bleeding heart principles. But it just does. If I was going to get Freudian about it I'd say it was because I really hated the house I grew up in and have been completely obsessed with houses ever since. So if the social policy doesn't come off, then I'll go off and be a real estate agent. Or, I will combine the comms and the real estate and be a freelance writer and develop property a la Sarah Beeny.

I'm excited about all these possibilities and they're not pie in the sky. I've rejigged my life (moved from Melbourne to the country so that we can be mortgage free) so that I can take my time and work out what I want to do. Or try all of them.

In your case, I don't know ... it took me long enough to figure my own thang out ... but I'd highly encourage you to work out what you're passionate about. What do you think about when you've got some downtime. I know for me, I'm always thinking about solving the world's problems ... and houses! Voila!

I have always wanted to be a counsellor - when it came to deciding for certain it was a toss up social work/human services and psychology. I picked psychology and although I lost my mojo for studying this year I have loved every subject I've done. I can't wait to start working in the area - just not sure what section of it yet lol

Do you have a passion for something? I was always drawn to counselling - with no explanation really. GL xx
