    Salicylate-sensitive bub and breastfeeding

Just wondering if anyone has experience BF a salicylate-sensitive bub?

We went to a Naturopath because of DS's ongoing wind issues and indentified high-salicylate foods as the culprit.

I had been giving him avocado and chia seeds and some high-sal veg and they've been easy to replace with neg-sal foods. I was consuming a massive amount of sals and have had to cut right back, also. I've also been dairy-free for most of his life due to his wind issues from that. Happy to do it if it means we can heal his little tum, though.

What i want to know is if other LO's have grown out of this and, if so, how long was it until you could start introducing small amounts again?

how did they identify which foods were affecting baby?

i have been thinking of talking to a dietition/LC but not sure how beneficial it could be and if i can justify the cost

I knew from experience what foods I was eating that he was reacting to eg capsicum, tomato-based pasta sauce, broccoli to name just a few!

His symptoms got a lot worse when I started him on his own solids.

Since removing them from his diet and cutting down a lot from mine, he is a lot more comfortable.

The naturopath was $70 for an initial consult and we got 80% of that back on private health. I'll see her in 3 weeks from then armed with a food diary for the both of us so that we can more clearly identify the triggers.

Dd2. Oh boy what a nightmare. Poor kid.

Look we didn't eliminate it, we just found that too hard. As she grew we relaxed a bit, let's say at 2yrs old we went to a bday party. If there was a fruit platter she would go nuts, we treated that then with Zyrtec. Not the best but rare enough we were happy.

Dd is now almost 6. She self regulates still it's amazing. She just knows.

We just think about things still. Not to deliver three high sal meals a day.

It's not over but much much much better now.

I will never not feel guilty over how many grapes I ate when she was new.

Oh and she still doesn't sleep thru the night

    Thankyou, Teagam.

So, you BF her? For how long? Did you see a correlation between what you ate and how she was?

I don't know what to think today...I was so 'good' yesterday with what he and I ate and STILL he woke for a couple of hours last night, all uncomfortable and squirmy and bubbly in his tummy. I ended up given him a big dose of Colic Relief and just patted his bum and he finally got some sleep.

He is teething at the moment and that does seem to increase his wind, no other symptoms just a bubbly tummy.

    Am I overthinking this????

Look into the GAPS diet. A reaction to sals would really just be a symptom of gut issues so you can choose to manage the symptoms (but more may come up which is probably what is happening now) or you can treat the cause and heal the gut. All the best.

Yes I bf her for almost 2yrs. Yes I saw a correlation between what I ate and how she reacted. Meows right if you have it in you you should look at gaps ! I just haven't yet but DH and I are seriously looking at it now

Allergies and intolerances while bfing is a complex area. Sometimes what you eat will not affect your bub and sometimes it will - it depends on level of tolerance and the allergen itself. There is a dietician in WA who does skype and email consults who is amazing with this stuff. She is a Lactation Consultant as well as a dietician specialising in food sensitivities and breastfeeding. If you google Joy Anderson you should find her contact details, otherwise PM me if you would like me to send them to you. I highly recommend talking to her - she is absolutley a guru and it will mean you will have very good information and won't have to guess.

HotI, I haven't as yet but I probably will be before too long. I personally know people who have and are who have had great results.
