50mm 1.4!

Wow I didn't know that a lens could cause so much excitement

If anyone is considering getting one but is hesitant I say GO FOR IT! I am so over the moon happy with this tiny little lens

Sam that's awesome... I am still learning all this lens stuff so I assume you are using it for portraits, like the kids? Do you have any examples on your blog etc? I have a $150 voucher at Teds and need to get a lens, do you think that would be the best one for me?

I'll put some examples up later. They are on PC and I am on macbook atm

I'm sure I took the ticker pic of Caleb with it but it's too small to see the result properly.

I've used it for portraits and I had a bit of a muck about in the garden the other day but it was a bit too windy so will have to wait till a really still day.

I've had a bit of trouble getting used to it. It is hard to get the focus spot on when it's opened up to 1.4.

You were talking about a macro the other day weren't you? I'd be tempted to get that but I wanted to have the extremely short DOF.

Kelly - do you have a 35-70mm zoom? That's generally a really nice lens to have in your camera case

A bit of the clarity has been lost from reducing and uploading but you can get an idea of what they look like with the DOF that small.

Oh wow, loving that sharpness!!!! I have the standard 18-55 - so the 35-70 would be better for the kids/portraits?

I like the 35-70 for portraits and its a general workhorse for me. But getting one with a good aperature range is imperitave - I mine's 2.2/3.3 as the smallest ap, which sorta is annoying when using the 70mm side of things. But then mine also does a macro which is funky.

A friend of mine has the 1.8 lens, what do you think of that one? She said its about $150 which isn't bad!

Oh nonononno not UTD

Tracey was just making my head swell...

Now I don't really know the difference between the canon lenses but when I was reseaching the nikon ones the 1.4 is supposed to be a better built lens than the 1.8 IRT the type of glass and the internal elements. It took me a lot of time to decide on it partly due to the extra cost.
