Furgurnie - Casts do get smelly, i suppose the only things you can do are avoid leakages, and a little drop of eucalyptus oil as above or Nilodour. Dont worry too much about a little smellyness, the guy who removed the K's first cast said they have seen some really bad ones and ours was absolutely nothing to worry about.
Not sure about tip toe thing, perhaps it balances out any slight difference in leg length. This seems to be K's motivation. Now that her legs are closer to being the same she says it feels like she is walking with one high heal on, and after one being shorter for so long, it may take a little getting used to. I will ask surgeon next time.
Jackie - Hope your appts went really well
Oh and yes K has three pins running through the hip bone to hold it together till the bone knits back together, but to remove them they just need to make small incision and pull them out like slinters (just really big ones). Should be in the next couple of months.
Test drive ticker below, fingers crossed.
