Hi crosswig - welcome to the forum. I think all of us have found this forum wonderful as it makes you feel that you are not alone. My daugher Scarlett was in her pavlik harness for only just over 3 months becasue she only went into it at 3.5 months and after that it was not doing it's job anymore. After that she went into a dennis brown brace for a longer period (although only at night after the first few months). I remember pinning my hopes on getting out of the brace by christmas the first year and being so dissapointed when we were told her treatment would be more long term than originally thought. For some reason, Scarlett's hip took alot longer than normal to correct itself so she was in her brace at night up until 4 months ago (when she was 22 months). We still have annual reviews until she is 5 to see if it completely fixes itself.

Anyway I'm sure you've read on here that all of us have had our moments of breaking down and crying thinking that nothing will ever be the same, but it does pass and as time goes on, you situation will become the norm. I talk to Scarlett about when she wore her brace now and it seems like a distant memory. She coped so well with everything that it makes it so much easier on us.

Good luck with the next 10 or so weeks. I used to go to appointments expecting the worst outcome but hoping for the best. That was you might be pleasantly surprised if there is a good result!

Hi everyone,

I have been out of touch for a while - we had a much needed holiday :dance:

My DD Olivia came out of her Spica about 2.5 weeks ago - it already feels like a distant memory, and she is pretty much doing everything she was before she went in - she has really blossomed since she's been out of the cast - not that she was miserable in it, but she just seems so much more enthusiastic about life.

Anyway, she had an x-ray when she came out of the cast - her hips are stable and in the right place, but the angle is still a little steep and there is no bone growth yet. The specialist said that is not unusual, and both should come with time, and Olivia is in a Rhino Cruiser brace for sleeping, to give her a bit of extra stability until things are totally good. We go back in 2 months for another x-ray and check-up to see how things are going.

I'm loving having Olivia out of her cast, but I feel rediculously worried about the fact that she has no bone growth yet. I keep looking at her legs and wondering if she is doing something slightly different with her dodgy one, if this is a sign her hip is slipping out of place again?

Did anyone else have this problem when their children came out of the cast? I'm so scared that after all of this, she is still going to end up having an operation and going back into the Spica...

I feel like you're reading my mind and saying all the things I'm feeling!

My DD has been out of the spica for six weeks now and into the rhino cruiser full time. It's horrible at each nappy change, I've been looking at the uneven folds of skin, fretting away that its all going horribly wrong. But on Monday, we had an xray and check up with our surgeon and the hip that was under-developed is pretty much perfect, and the one that had the open reduction is still very shallow, but beginning to grow! DD now can have the brace off for an hour in the morning and an hour at night and the folds of skin being uneven didn't concern the surgeon. So we're back again in six weeks for another xray to see how we're travelling.

DD is LOVING the two hours out of the brace and we make it so that the last time it comes off is right before her bath so she doesn't get cranky about it going on. Now, if only those rotten teeth would come through...!!

Hope everyone is travelling okay and all the bubs and mums are hanging in there!

Glad to hear I'm not the only paranoid one out there... and really pleased to hear you had such positive news on Monday :clap:

I don't think I'll relax until I hear that there is evidence of some bone growing there...

I was really pleased when the specialist said Olivia only needed to wear the brace for sleeping, because we were going on holiday a few days later and I wanted her to be able to swim etc, but now I'm stressing that maybe she should be wearing it all the time?!? I guess we just have to go with the specialist's advice - they know best...I hope!

Our next x-ray is also in about 6 weeks, so fingers crossed it's good news for both our DD's!:pray:

Hi everybody,

We moved from a small Pavlik harness to a medium sized one today. The physio let me give DD2 a bath. It felt so good to hug my little girl without the harness and she loved her bath. It was pretty sad to put the new harness on but hopefully we'll have some progress at her next check-up with the ped in 8 weeks. It would be nice to have a couple of harness free hours a day.

I need some advice from the network, just before we got the harness I asked our ped if he'd provide me with a certificate so that I could use sick leave for the time that we have the harness on. He didn't think that work would cover it - but my HR have confirmed they will if I have a certificate - because it isn't that much extra work. So at the moment I'm using my Long Service Leave and annual leave to care for her. Does anyone else have any experiences on this front? I know compared to families in a spica we have it much easier but I'd rather spend my leave doing something like going on a big family holiday when we are harness free. Do I just leave it or ask again?

Hi All,

I have just been reading through all the posts to find out more about hip dysplasia as it appears our DS has 'developmental dysplasia' in his right hip. He is 5.5 months old and I am very concerned as it appears that treatment is much more effective if caught early and as we are nearing the 6 month mark some options may not be avail etc. Our paed advised that unlike congenital dysplasia which is picked up at birth or 6-8 week checks (Bailey was checked at these times and at his 4 month health check and nothing was detected) the developmental dysplasia occurs as the hips etc develop so there was nothing to identify earlier (If I have heard him correctly I think have this right, the whole conversation is now an emotional blur in my head now). Anyway, we have to take DS for an ultrasound on his hip asap (he had skeletal xrays which picked it up as he has some gross motor skill delay and our paed was routinely checking his bone growth) and then pending that outcome, then off to the orthopedic surgeon. I am devastated as I am concerned that this will further hinder his gross motor development issues and also as he is almost 6 months am concerned how agressive treatment might be if needed. I just want to wrap him up in cotton wool and run away :(

Anyway, reading some of your stories has been inspiring, and scary also so I am hoping the next few days/weeks brings us good news :crossfingers:

as a new member myself welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear about your little one but glad to know that you have made your way here. Reading back over the posts there are a lot of very useful tips. A while back there was a consolidated list of questions to ask at the ultrasound so you have a better idea of your situation. Another good tip was - if possible - take someone along to the early appointments so that together you have a better chance of remembering important information.

Best of luck for your next appointments and hopefully all will be well. If not, remember there is a wealth of experience and support here for you. The members will have at least experienced some of what you are feeling right now.

Crosswig - I would definitely ask again for a certificate. If your work is prepared to cover you with sick leave that's all that matters. Just let the paed know that. You shouldn't have to use up your other leave.

Naomi - welcome to the forum. Good luck with everything. You'll just have to wait to see the outcome of the test before worrying too much. The treatment will depends on the severity of the problem. Our daughter was in a pavlik harness at 3.5 months and then a dennis brown brace at 6 months so you just never know. I know what you mean about wanting to run away and hide. I felt like that at first too. I was so worried about how it would impact on my daughters development and temperament. I'm sure deep down you know that the problem needs to be fixed and as you will see on here - even if your bub's development is delayed due to treatment, they will back on track in now time. Let us know how you go with your appointments in the coming weeks.

We have our ultra sound booked for tomorrow morning then back to the paed next wed, then onto the orthopedic surgeon from there - I think the wait will do my head in but there is not much we can do about it. Nicole you are spot on, my biggest worry is how it will impact Baileys development, he already has gross motor skill developmental delays eg he cant lift his head or prop himself up from tummy time position among other things and is almost 6 months so this is just another hurdle to overcome and will set him back even further potentially

I just thought I'd write a progress report because I'm excited, and for everyone out there who are just beginning this journey, please don't despair too much - my DD, while out of the brace, ROLLED OVER!!!!! :dance:

For anyone going through this you can understand what an achivement this is. She wasn't even three months when the first brace went on, then into surgery and a spica and now into a rhino cruiser brace, only coming off for two hours each day. I am so proud of her determination to do this and I know that once this brace is off for good there will be no looking back.

Hang in there everyone, you're not alone, and there IS light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Guys,

I took Bailey for his ultrasound today, and although the sonographer was not telling me anything (he was a bit of a twit), this is what the report says (I waited for the images so I could read it as we dont go back to the Paed until next Wednesday)

Hoping you guys can put it in laymans terms for me

The coverage on both sides is good, the right being measured at 77% and on the left being measured at 76% (I take this to be fantastic as a friend told me anything above 70% is considered in the normal range?) The right ALPHA angle was measured at 77 degrees and at the left 64 degrees. While the coverage is good, the acetubular margins remain quite rounded bilaterally. While this can be associated with immaturity, it is quite prominent given Bailey's current age. (FYI - Bailey is almost 6 months)

Its the last part that I dont understand - what does it mean? Hoping someone can shed some light

You are right the coverage is very good, someone else might know more and I really am not sure about this but I think where the reports talks about the acetubular margins means there is a gap between the hip socket and the ball of the femur. My DD's report says "there is mild rounding of both acetabular margins with app 50% femoral head coverage" and I know the radiographer talked about a gap.

In most cases the coverage is the important part and once the covereage is around 70% means kids start to come out of whatever brace they are in, so not really sure what it all means for you.

I know it will be a long wait till your Dr app. but just enjoy your baby without any brace/harness while you can.

Edit - Naomi I was just looking online at a definition of acetabular and found there is form of hip dysplasia called acetabular dysplasia perhaps this is what the issue with Bailey's hips

My name is Jess, and my daughter Lahni got diagnosed with hip hip dysplasia when she was 1 week and 4 days old. We got into her paeds when she was 2 weeks old, she has been in the pravlik harness ever since. ( she is nearly 5 weeks old now)
I was really upset when I first found out that she had hip dysplasia but now have come to terms with everything. And her paeds is fantastic... we had our check up yesterday and he was very happy with her progress... he said her hips are in the socket and are stable! She also has another brace on, Im not sure what it is called but it goes over her nappy?
She has another appointment in 2 weeks, and then we'll have our ultrasound to see how everything is going. Its so good to find a group to talk about this sort of stuff with :)

Jesska - welcome. Pleased to hear Lahni is doing well, since it was picked up really early she will be out of the brace really quickly.

DD2 came out of her DB bar today, well out of it during the day and in it for night times for the next month then out completely. She was only in it 6 weeks - she went from 50% coverage to 80% coverage in 6 weeks which is just fantastic.

Bridee - great news that DD is close to giving up her brace soon!!

Jesska - congrats on the birth of your DD, sorry to hear about her dysplasia, but great that it was picked up early

Well re my previous posts - Today we saw the paed and he sent us straight over to see the ortho surgeon. Overall we have pretty good news. The surgeon said that Baileys right hip is 'immature', so not fully developed as it should be at this point, hence the acetubular angle comments by the sonographer. So in a nutshell the surgeon said that when taking into account Baileys arrival at 36 weeks gestation, his smallness etc, his development is more like a 4 months old from a bone growth/developmental perspective (he's actually 6 months old this friday). The surgeon is happy to monitor the growth for the next month, and then make a further decision on treatment (if needed). We need to xray/scan Bailey again in 4 weeks and if there is no change then he will have to wear a brace for approx 6 months, (Dennis Brown bar) but we would be able to take it off for baths, nappy changes and play etc - so wearing it about 15hrs per day. However he said that waiting a month won’t have any impact on Baileys development as his hips have excellent coverage, and with any luck the issue with the angle of the right hip will take care of itself with his normal growth in the next month. He ruled out surgery too which was a big relief. So for now we feel pretty good about things, we know exactly what’s going to happen if anything, and both the paed and ortho were fantastic and carefully explained things and answered our questions. I know I'll be anxious again next month when we go back but for now I am pretty happy with the outcome, so much better than what the worst case scenario could have been. Obviously I dont want him to have to wear the brace, but understanding exactly whats going on is a major step forward

Naomi - great news about Bailey. I was really pleased to read that they will just monitor it for a month and then if no change take some action. With DD2 the radiographers kept saying monitor for another 6 weeks - they said it was just that her hips were immature but thankfully the paed was proactive and thought things weren't going to change and agreed with me to go the brace option.

I'm very new to all of this - motherhood, hip dysplasia and posting on forums.

I'm just looking for your thoughts as I've been left a bit in the dark by my healthcare providers.

My DD's uneven leg creases were noticed at her 6-8 week check up, so we went to our GP who said she needed an ultrasound, which she had at 2 months. Coverage was around 50%, recommendation was for another ultrasound in six weeks. Second ultrasound (last week) at 4 months showed right hip was now 60% and OK, however the left hadn't changed, indicating mild dysplasia. Saw GP the next day who had no idea what this meant - he spoke to a paediatrician who was also unsure, so GP referred her to an orthopaedic surgeon who doesn't want to see her until she is 5 months.

I pretty much freaked out when we got the second ultrasound results, and again after waiting a week after the ultrasound only to find out we wouldn't be seeing the specialist for another 4 weeks. After confirming with orthopaedic surgeon's office that the wait isn't because he is booked out, but because he specifically wants to see her in a month I am feeling a bit calmer, but still very much in the dark.

I am torn between hoping she won't need to wear a brace and fear that she will and her treatment will be longer/more invasive because it was started late.

I know a lot of others are in much worse situations, should I just be enjoying what may be our last few brace free weeks?

Congratulations Bridee! You must be so happy with the improvement in your little one's hips and getting to take the DB bar off during the day.:dance: I too hope for such sensational improvement in DD2's hips the next time we see the paed.

Welcome to the forum Jess. I'm sorry to hear about your little one. It is good that the diagnosis has come so early and it getting sorted out now.

Naomi, I'm glad that they are giving the hips a chance to mature before intervention. It sounds like you've been given some good information and if your son does ends up in a brace you'll be in a position of strenth being fully informed about what is going on.

We are now six weeks into our initial twelve week stint in the pavlik harness. I do hope that the next six weeks go as quickly as the first. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have the jitters quite badly before our next appointment as I'm starting to get them already. Silly as it such a long way away.:redface:

DD2 has tried her very best over the last week to roll. I had been a little worried but the physio assured me today that that is OK and she can't hurt her hips.

Welcome VPM. It is a very confusing time isn't it when you start on this journey? I found the wait between diagnosis, ultrasound and starting treatment the hardest bit. Especially when you have a bit of a wait between diagnosis and seeing your specialist.

I don't know if I have any good advice about the wait until you see the specialist and if that will mean longer or more invasive treatment. Who are you going to see? Maybe the other members will be able to give you some guidance as to their experiences if you share the specialist (Moderator - if we all play nice is this within the guidelines of this forum?) I guess it is somewhat reassuring that the wait is a considered position on the specialist's part.

Definitely enjoy the time until you (possibly) have the brace fitted. I find that I miss baths most of all.

Hi everyone.
Well we had our paeds appointment and he is really happy with the way her hips are going. They are in the socket and stable which is fantastic. He also said instead of 12 weeks being in the stint it will be 13-14 weeks?? not sure why, cos he seems to think everything is coming along great.... we have her ultrasound on the 23rd of this month. So kinda nervous about that, hopefully everything is looking good... what should i ask the person that does the ultrasound?? any advice/tips from you girls would be great.
The doc however did say that those 13-14 weeks she wont be in the pavlik harness all that time, she'll be in another brace... but yeah I was kinda disapointed when he said she'll be in it for the full 12 weeks maybe longer. We see our paeds the afternoon of the ultrasound. Does the ultrasound hurt the babies?? Im getting my DH to come with me and not go to work in the morning, dont think i can do it on my own. and esp if i have to bring the boys, they are so full on!! well i hope everyone elses bubs are coming along great. cyas

Jesska - pleased things went well at the paeds. The ultrasound doesn't hurt but they can protest about it - DD2 had 3 ultrasounds throughout her treatment. The 1st one she screammed the whole time and in the end I was breastfeeding her as they scanned to keep her calm but she did have to have a kidney ultrasound prior to the hips so it was a big event for her when she was only 6wks. The 2nd scan she cried a bit but not much and 3rd scan she just didn't care didn't say a thing.

At the scan the major thing you want to know is what the coverage % is, you are hoping for something around 60%. They may not be able to tell you that until they actually go to write the report but they should be able to tell you roughly.

We were always lucky that the radiographer ended up doing DD2 scans rather than the sonographer. We didn't request it it just happended DD2 put on enough of a performance the sonographers weren't confident in getting good pictures and the 3rd scan the sonographer had just no idea on how to scan with DB bar on. The radiographer is always going to be able to tell you more.

Newbie in need of some advice

Hi everyone, I am new here and although I have been reading lots on the belly belly forums this is my very first post. So apologies if things are not quite right.

Anyway today I took my DD Chloe for her 6 month maternal and child health check up. My nurse found that her skin folds on her thighs and buttocks do not match and that her left knee is lower than her right. She has advised me to take her to my GP who will then order an ultrasound. I'm just freaking out a little as at 2 weeks the other health nurse thought she detected a clikcy hip on that same left side but then when I went back at 4 weeks to see my now regular health nurse she couldn't hear it and advised that it had prob. corrected itself. My GP also never said anything about it at the 6 week check.

Just worried that it has gone too long and a she is 6 months will need more agressive treatment. She is such a cruisy and happy baby I feel so sad at the prospect of her being in a cast. I also have a 2.5 year old boy that has never had any probs. he was crawling at 6 months - she has only rolled once and my DH and I have been laughing that he had to crawl to get places whereas all the action just comes to her. Feel like I should have noticed this earlier.

Anyway just having a sook, guess I am a bit shocked. Can anyone advise me on what generally happens if one hip is out in an older baby. I know you can't give me medical advice but I just have no idea what to expect.

Wiggs - I can't really help you with what happens with older babies as both mine were picked up early (6weeks and 12weeks) but just wanted to say good luck and while things seem scary now don't get too far ahead of your self - uneven skin folds doesn't necessarily mean hip problems some babies can just have uneven skin folds. In saying all of that I would be getting it checked quickly so if treatment is needed it is not delayed.

Hello everyone. I got the news today I've been dreading. My little girl is 9 months old and on the verge of Walking. Now she's going to be put in spica cast and be imobilized for the next 3 months. I'm of course devistated but am not entirely surprized. In fact I'm furious at my doctor because it took until now to find it. I understand things can be missed but in this case I noticed the "POP" in her hip almost 4 and a half months ago and I told her doctor of that but he said she was very "strong" and nothing was wrong! I felt something was wrong but he assured me she was strong in her legs. My problem is that if a parent says they felt a "pop" in their daughters legs he (the doctor) should take that seriously considering what a pop means.
I also understand I'm in the blaming stage right now but if this could've been worked out earlier it wouldn't be screwing up her walking as much.
Even the doctor who is going to do the surgery stated that it's rare for her to see children this old having to have the surgery as it's caught much sooner. Which I responded "I did catch this Much earlier!" but my doctor said it was fine.
So that's my rant, but I hope I can come here to get some tips on how to cope with this situation from those who've gone through this. Thank you in advance.

Hera's Dad - what another idiot of a doctor. The quicker they do mandatory ultrasounds at 6 weeks old, the better all our babies will be. You'll get a lot of advice here and ideas of what to do. The best bit I found was to get a beanbag for bub once the spica goes on and to look at loads of photos online of babies in spicas so that you're not so shocked when your baby comes out of surgery. Good luck.

She's really starting to feel this horrid Melbourne heat, even in a fully airconditioned house. I asked the surgeon if swimming was an option, and he said that was fine, and even to leave the brace off for a couple of hours if we do put her in a pool, but I feel so bad for her- after a b/f her head is soaked because she is just so hot, poor darling. We've got another appointment in four weeks so I've got every finger and toe crossed that the brace can come off, even if it is just during the day. She cries if I put shorts on her under the brace, she hates the feeling of the foam inserts on her legs and I know I'm not supposed to do it anyway, but had to try something.

I really feel for you guys out there at the moment with bubs in spicas when we're struggling in the brace, which I'm sure isn't half as bad.

Hope everyone is coping with all of this. I can loudly say that I CAN'T WAIT FOR ALL OF THIS TO BE OVER!!!!

Thank you , I am going to do the bean bag, but how long does this help a baby that wants to roam around like nobody's buisenesss.

bridee - thanks for all the info on the ultrasounds, means a lot. I don't really like going into things not knowing what to expect kinda thing, haha, strange I know. I'd rather know that she may scream her lungs out than going in there thinking she will be a perfect Little Angel.
I have made sure my hubby's boss lets him have the morning off, and my mother in law is going to look after the boys for us, thank god. I am really nervous of what the results are going to be though... Im just hoping for good news... obviously - well aren't we all. Just a quick question, does anyone know why babies get hip dysplaysia?? or is it something that just happens???

wiggs - sorry i dont really have any advice for you - as i am only new to this myself... but i hope everything works out for you and you DD at your appointment.

Hera's Dad - Omg if i were you i would be majorly ****ed off, i cant believe your doctor didn't take you seriously!!!! some doctors these days really annoy me!! they get paid to do a job, so they should bloody well do it properly. Sorry I don't have any advice for you either, as I haven't been through it. I hope your little girl adjusts to the Spica quickly and she isn't too uncomfortable.

Corelly - That sucks that your DD couldnt get taken out of the brace yet, how annoying for you. How old is your DD and how old was she when she was diagnosed with HD? Oh I know what you mean about bubs feeling the hot weather... my lil one is deff feeling it, so when we are home she is only in the pavlik harness and a nappy... I am also constantly putting wet face washes on her face and body to try to keep her cool. Oh how I wish i could just strip her off and give her a bath. But this is the best thing for her, and I shall do what my doctor has told me and not take her harness off, as hard as it is somedays. She is a very good baby though so I cant really complain.
What is the rhino brace?? is that the brace they go in after the pavlik?? My little girl has been in the pavlik since she was 2 weeks old, then at our 3rd appointment our doctor also put her in a brace, that went over her clothes. its plastic and looks like a nappy sorta.... I just cant for the lfe of me remember what he called the brace.
I hope at your appointment in 4 weeks time the brace can come off for good!!

Hera's Dad - We found an adult sized beanbag to be better than a baby/child one - it's bigger so it fits better around bub. I don't know how you'll go with it because my DD still isn't mobile - has never been, so she's happy to sit in it for quite a while.

Jesska - DD went into the first brace when she was 7wks, in that for four weeks, one week brace free and then into surgery for the open reduction. It was then the spica for five weeks and now the rhino brace. She's now seven months old. The rhino cruiser wraps around her thighs and around her waist, it's plastic and foam, with velcro to hold it on and is so easy to work with. It goes on over clothes and comes off for every nappy change, baths and for an hour morning and afternoon. It's pretty flexible and kids that have already been walking or crawling can do both in it. From what you're describing, I think your bub must be in the rhino. I was watching DD this morning, trying to roll over in it - she got right up on her side and stayed there!

Hi, my DD Ella is 6 weeks old and had an ultrasound last week to check her hips as the paed said she may have hip dysplasia when she was a day old also when we saw him again at 3 weeks.
We go back tomorrow to discuss results, though I picked up the scans and reports yesterday.

It says on the report: bilateral grade 2 acetabular dysplasia. it also says the right and left acetabular roof is shallow.
The left femoral head coverage measures 48% at rest and reduces to 38% when stressed.
The rightfemoral head coverage measures 44% at rest and reduces to 38% when stressed.

Does anyone know what this means? how bad is it? If she is gade 2 how many grades are there? will she need to be in a harness? etc.

I guess I will get some answers tomorrow at the paed, just so scared and sad for my little bub!

Just popped in to say hi as I haven't been on here for a while. Xavier had his second ultrasound (14 weeks old) this week and even though I haven't spoken to the paed yet the sonographer said it all looks good. He has 60% coverage in one hip and 'well above 60%' in the other. Good news for us.

To all the new forum member - welcome. I am sure that all of you will find great comfort in talking to the other parents going through similar situations as you on here. When my daughter was diagnosed at 3.5 months (now 2.5 years) I got so much support on here.

Erybery - I'm sure you will find out all about this tomorrow, but I think grade 2 is the second best grade if they have hip dysplasia. Grade 1 is the least severe. My daughter's 'bad' hip was only 17% coverage when she was first diagnosed and I believe that full coverage is somewhere around 70%. Good luck with her treatment. Since she is so young and it is not extreme, hopefully her it will be short and sweet!

Hera's dad - so sorry to hear your story. I hear it all the time. I am so lucky to have had a wonderful GP and community nurses who have always listened to my concerns. Hopefully Hera's treatment will be successful and the time will fly by. Once they come out of casts/braces they pick up where they left off and catch up so quickly. Hopefully Hera copes with not being mobile for that long. You might have to try to find other activities to amuse her and take her mind off things.

Erybery - my DD2 had coverage that was about 50% in both hips. Initially at the 6wks scan they said it could still correct itself and to rescan at 12weeks. Nothing had changed at 12wks so she went into a DB bar. After 6wks her coverage was 70% so with only mild dysplacia babies respond quickly to treatment.

Well this is the week we take Bailey back to the hospital then straight over to the orthopedic surgeon straight after and if his acetabular angle hasn't improved he will have to wear a brace, most likely a denis brown bar, so I have everything crossed for thursday so thats not the case. Bailey had an appt with a paedeatric physio on wednesday due to his gross motor skill delay and she confirmed he had poor tone, especially in arms, neck and back and when I told her about the dysplasia and possible bracing she said "You dont want that, it will further hinder his development" - NO SH#& SHERLOCK, of course we dont!! Sheesh, talk about stating the obvious.

Naomi - what an idiot that woman is to say that to you! Besides stating the obvious, if he needs treatment that is the most important thing and everything else will have to be put on hold. I will keep my fingers crossed for you this week. Let us know how you go.

So the paed is sending us for another ultrasound in 4 weeks at the Childrens hospital. He said he wants to give it bit more time to see if there is any improvement as her hips aren't dislocatable or out of the sockets, they are just shallow. so now just have to wait.... I just really hope waiting doesnt make it worse!

Erybery - waiting won't make it worse given the hips aren't dislocated but make sure if nothing has changed in 4 weeks you get treatment because the quicker you seek treatment the quicker it will be over and fixed. We are proof of that and our cases seem similar.

Just thought I would post some good news, as I hadn't been in for a while...

We had our 2 month check up (2 months since coming out of the spica) - Olivia had an x-ray and the specialist was very happy with her progress! He could see an improvement since the last x-ray (when she came out of the spica) - her hips still aren't quite perfect, but he said they should continue to improve now on their own, until they are completely perfect. She has been wearing a rhino cruiser brace just for sleeping since she came out of the cast - he said to continue with this while she still tolerated it, but not to bother getting a bigger size if she grew out of it. So it was all very positive - I was SO relieved, as I had it in my mind that, because she didn't have bone growth yet when she came out of the spica, her hip would slip out again, but it's all looking good. Our specialist doesn't seem to talk in terms of coverage (and I forgot to ask him about that) - he talks 'angles' - one hip is 20 degrees and the other is 15 degrees - I forget which is the better one, but he said the angle would even out over the next few months. He could also see signs of her right (dodgy) hip bone growing. Yippee!:dance:

Anyway - we go back again for another x-ray and check up in 3 months, but then, if all is still ok, we won't need to see him again for another year.

I know we're not out of the woods just yet, (I won't relax I don't think until her hips are completely normal...), but I just wanted to give everyone some good news - there is light at the end of the tunnel!
