DS has a large kidney abscess and after getting out of hospital on Christmas Eve (we are on the Hospitals in the Home program) he is still on IV antibiotics and will be for some time. There was no change after 3 days of antibiotics to the abscess so it's a bit of a wait and see what happens - all we know is ABs for a good few weeks until the next scan and then if there is no change, we'll most likely be heading to the paed renal specialist in Brissie. Has anyone else had anything similar? He's also had a UTI so I'm not sure, but I think both may be related.
Thanks matey. Docs are a little perplexed to be honest. Nothing showed up in the scan when I was pg, and they haven't really seen too much of this kind of thing. NOt sure how long it's been there or what came first, the abscess or UTI. Just on ABs for AGES to hope it kills the abscess and then more tests to see why it happened. Ned is looking the picture of health again though and is the happiest baby around I reckon! Sits there and smiles and giggles all day which is nice. SO not too bad.....just want it to go and get back to normal asap. His health is all that matters!
Soph-Firstly huge hugs hun.....I had no idea that Ned had this. A UTI would most definitely be caused his Kidney abscess. UTI's are normally from bacteria, kidney infections or abscesses.
An abscess is an infection that has occurred in the tissue and your body has 'blocked' it off so to speak making an abscess. I really hope it goes away hun and I'm so glad to hear that hes back to his normal self.
Soph - sorry to hear Ned has been unwell .Joel recently was in hospital with a severe UTI and on IV antibiotics too.A scan later showed he has severe urinary/kidney reflux but he didn't have a kidney abscess.Nothing showed up during my pregnancy scans either.
UTI's usually mean there is urinary reflux in boys especially under 6 months.
He will have a special scan DMSA in 3 weeks to check his kidney function and make sure there is no scarring /damage from UTI(s).We got referred to a paed urology surgeon btw at Children's Hosp.
I hope Ned heals quickly and there is no further problems but it is important he is followed up by renal / paed specialist regardless from what my paed Dr said.
Hi Trish! Sorry Joel has been through this too, well and truley is the pits eh? Well we were back at the hosp today (doing Hospital in the Home, so just a trip to see the paed) and we werer a bit more demanding. Gotta have another U/s in the next couple of days. Paed finally admitted that he has been practising since 1973 and seen nothing like it, so no one knows really. He spoke to the paed urologist in Brissie though who said that if it is an abscess (cos they don't really know what it is!) then yeap it will need surgery. Poor Ned though, his bum is red raw from diarrehea from the ABs. Let me know how Joel goes with the next scan.
Soph - poor Ned - yes I know about AB poo's Joel is just on a daily dose now but still runny and stinky.I am glad you are getting referred to paed urologist and I hope they help Ned.
Hope all goes well with Ned's next ultrasound. I know it's not a fun thing for them to have done and it's so hard to hold them down while they do it as well.
Thanks guys! U/s is at 2.30 today and the paed wants them to call his mobile while we are there with the results (how's that????) so fingers crossed we get some action soon. I'm kinda hoping either way we get to see the Brissie specialist. It's a nightmare trying to give him oral ABs - we just switched 'cos the last lot gave him HORRENDOUS diarrohea and red raw bum, but he still totally gags. It has to be at least an hour since the last feed or he spews everywhere, poor little man.
Well it's a miracle - the abcsess has vanished!!!!!!!!!!! Fingers crossed we can stop the ABs soon. I think they may still want to do a few tests and follow up but i am soooooo happy :P
