My dd is 9 months and after doing too much googling (darn google!)about hand flapping and teething grinding (which she does) im now concerned she be somewhere on the spectrum?
i think you're probably being a little OTT at 9months your DD is still so very young and a lot of the traits of ASD don't show up until later. Could your DD be teething? Perhaps she's 'grinding' because her mouth is sore?
Its only natural that us mums worry far too much about our kiddies..don't stress i'm sure your DD is fine.
I didn't notice DS (who is on the spectrum) grinding his teeth until recently and he's 3, i don't think all teeth grinding means ASD but i could be wrong?
If you're really worried take her to the MCHN..i'm sure they will put your mind at rest
Reading over my post again, think i should just not worry and quit googling things hehehe...slight overreacting mumma here
DD has been grinding her teeth since she was 4mths old which is when she got her first teeth but its only gotten progressively worse as more teeth have come through (she has 8 in total) - so im thinking it may just be her teeth - will just keep an eye on her - still so much more developing to do!
My DD1 who is on the spectrum didn't start flapping until she was 4 1/2! She did do finger flicking though but that only started around 13-14 months.
I think if you are aware of the "signposts" for ASD, you may pick some up and get concerned, if by 2 she hasn't reached some milestones, or has issues with speech it maybe a good idea to get her checked out by a behavioural paediatrician or a speech therapist jic. Up until then, just keep an eye on her and trust your instincts!
Thanks Christy - my best friend's son is on the spectrum so i guess i am a bit more inclined to read up on things which what got me worried about the hand flapping/grinding teeth thing. I will def be keeping an eye on her and her development in the coming the years
