Hi Kelly, my bub was not really interested in eating for quite a while. He just preferred to play with it, but now there's no stopping him (most days anyway). He still loves to play, but also loves choosing different pieces to put in his mouth and actually eat.
DS is getting much better with the spoon! We use two at once, I load one up for him, while he is putting it in his mouth I load another one. I also found a very thick natural yoghurt, so no more problems there
I can't remember who suggested I try roasted pumpkin and carrot, but thank you! He absolutely loved it.
I'm going overseas soon and just stressing slightly about food while travelling. I was thinking I might have to resort to buying some of that pre-packed baby food for the flight days, has anyone used this before? Are there any natural ones you can get? I don't really want to buy baby food, so any ideas on what kinds of non-messy food I can keep in my handbag for him? How do you do BLS in a restaurant or public place?? I've given him food at the park and at a cafe, just toast with soup or just dried bread, but I can't just give him bread the entire time I'm away. I would love for him to try noodles and rice and vegie stir fries, but I'd feel awful leaving a mess, and I don't want to do lots of clothes changes either.
Thanks for all of your quick replies! I feel reassured knowing we're doing the right thing. He is absolutely loving experimenting and doing it all himself. Hopefully soon he'll actually start swallowing, haha.
Bec no advice I'm sorry, but Goodluck!
Belfie thanks for the advice. Ha, our kids with expensive tastes. DS1 is gobbling up bananas too! Shame they're so expensive right now.
Mummy tummy, thanks. I do always forget the food is fun until 1. It's amazing how different 2 little boys can be, i guess coz DS1 was eating so much by now I got worried!
Anyway I have some boys who need me so I'll be back later xx
Peanutter, don't worry if he doesn't want to eat. They won't starve themselves and I've alsways found (especially when younger) they ahve 'eating days' and non-eating days and it all evens out in the end.
Nutter - I have realised that dinner is DD's absolute worst meal of the day. It's generally even worse when she has a daycare day as she eats so much more at daycare..... I still can't figure that out but putting it down to seeing the other kids eat and doing what they do (in a massive adult serving sized way.) I think because that's her tired time, she often just eats 1 or 2 things to please us and then starts pulling off her bib and climbing out of her high chair. We've had to put a harness on her IKEA high chair to stop it from being dangerous so that stopped the climbing out thankfully but she makes it very clear when she's done and that's that. I just have to trust she knows what she is doing but her being on the low side of weight (10th percentile) does not help me. I actually thought she was 25th percentile but after consulting the red book - I was wrong.
Starangelk, how did you attach your harness? we have the same high chair, and the strap does nothing. DD just stands up and dances in the chair when she has had enough. Thought about drilling a couple holes at the top for shoulder straps- do you have an easier way?
My DD struggles at night to eat if she is tired. Recently, she has been ok but a few weeks back dinner was a few bites if that. I would offer more during the day, (always hoping that a full tummy would lead to good sleep). I have also given her cereal for dinner, when she has grabbed the box out of the cupboard, cos i know sometimes i feel like strange meals and maybe that's hers.
mumof2boys - yup, DS is 14 months. looks like starangelk and you and I have all been in the same boat!
good to know it's probably a phase ...
when I was at home more, I cooked so much more ... I never got to the point of making bread, but I'd make a lot of soups and other sweet and savoury dishes from scratch, but these days, it just doesn't happen.
I don't beat myself up about it - there's 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week, and at the moment, they're occupied!
When we travel with DD, we pack lots of dry things - dried fruits and biscuits and things that won't spoil easily like vegemite sandwiches. Sometimes I'll boil and egg in the morning and take that too. I use separate containers and chuck them in a fridge bag with some ice blocks. When we went OS, we just took all of this sort of thing including cheese sticks and then chucked it before we went through customs at the other end. We did have to advise it was food for the baby when leaving Aus but everyone was totally fine about it.
As far as BLS in a restaurant, so easy - just choose whatever is on the menu that seems the simplest to eat and also the quickest to get to you so your LO doesn't get bored waiting. I also suggest buying an art smock or long sleeved big for travelling to protect clothes and putting on a bib with a catcher (we got ours from Ikea but Tommee Tippee do great ones too) as a double protection. To clean we just take a stackload of baby wipes or wet facewashers in a bag and clean everything before we put DD in it (highchair and table) and then afterwards. We put all the bits that go on the floor in a serviette and leave this on our plates. Everyone is always so grateful that we clean up after her but I think it's neccessary!!
Things I keep in my handbag are baby mum mums, cheese sticks and dried fruit bits. She's also just gotten into plain biscuits so I've been putting vegemite on them and she loves them.
today he wasn't eating much for dinner, but would eat noodles and bamboo shoots and carrots off my fingers ... *sigh* ... but at least he was eating them!
HELP!! getting so frustrated - DS has started basically refusing to feed himself. We put his food on his tray like usual, and he just looks at it and giggles, gurgles, looks around, or whines and cries!!
If you put a spoon or fork there for you, he'll try to pass it to you.
Nutter, DD started doing this a few weeks back too so I just kept offering her different foods until she ate. Turns out she wanted PUREE. Can you freaking believe it? We've never given her puree in her life. And then I realised she was cutting teeth at the same time. But it's cool because we realised she could eat out of a bowl with a spoon by herself so there was a win in there. I just made her lots of mashed potato and roasted pumpkin until it was very very soft. Then she'd eat custard or rhubarb and yoghurt to finish her dinner off. She's just gotten back into her normal foods again now but we're still having to give her lots of soft stuff. Tonight she was dipping her sausage into her mash and sucking the mash off.
