DD eats like a horse - she gets so full her little belly sticks out like budda and goes rock hard!
Tonight she had chicken breast, broccoli, corn, cheese, bread and a huge pile of rockmelon that she wolfed downed!
I am finding that she doesn't drink much milk. She has self-weaned completely now, so I offer milk in the morning, after each of two naps, and before bed. She's not really drinking the nighttime one, but I guess she's eating so much that it's ok.

Peanutter I guess your little one wouldn't sleep so well if he was hungry, so he's probably ok

    Hey ladies,

New in here, but have read up a bit!

So, our little story is that for two weeks from 6 months DS was fending off spoon food as though he was the karate kid and choking it down as though it were the spiciest indian curry (yeah, right - just rice cereal or pureed apples!). Handed him a stick of avocado in frustration and he ate it!! He still refuses anything by spoon and wants to be independent and eat himself. I was concerned that he's not really getting any of it, but have been reading that this is all ok! And besides, his horrible nappies are proving me wrong. Only thing is that I'm worried we're doing lots of starchy bread and biscuit things, but fruit and veggies are difficult, they just seem too soft and he mushes them everywhere. Look forward to reading some advice on this today. Am going to try avo spread onto a cruskit tonight followed by possibly some yoghurt - I'm sure that will be messy!

Also, contrary to most of what I have been reading DS is more of a savoury boy than sweet. A beautiful finger of cooked pear was met with distaste and he's not a fan of apples either. Has dealt with some banana and kiwi ok, but this is all so different from feeding DD who loved everything off a spoon and mushy!!!

Despite DD's adamant insistence that she was totally ready for food, she's still a spit-and-vomiter. DS ate from 5.5 months, so just wondering if your little one started out playing, sptting out and vomitting any food they came into contact with, how long before they actually ate anything?

MadB - I thought DD was spitting everything but then I found bits of food in her nappy so figured she was getting more than I realised

Welcome star Until recently we always finished dinner with some yoghurt, I found it a really good way to make sure she had a little bit extra food before I put her down for the night.

heys ladies thought I'd come in here and :lurk: a bit to get your combined wisdom! How *exactly* do you start with BLS? Is holding a piece of corn to DS2's mouth the way? or something else?

put stuff in front of him or let him choose from your plate Kaz. It's self serve
The basic principle is that they feed themselves - so they start eating when they're ready and they eat what and as much as they feel they need to. Just keep anything you feel is unsuitable for him out of reach.

DD was keen to play from just before 6 months (taking food then and we offered at 6 months) but it wasn't until 8 months that she started swallowing and we saw evidence in her nappy.

Just let him graze from your plate or sit him in a highchair with some foods in front and see how he goes. They need to be sitting up straight, so if they are not ready to swallow the food it is easier to get it to the front and out of the mouth again.

same here - we just cook whatever meal we're up to, and then we plonk a portion on DS's high chair tray, and let him go for it

    have done since 6 months.

there was very limited success for a while, but now he hardly has any bottles (0-2 per day) and the rest of solid food. And he *loves* it!!

    welcome, kazbah!!

    Hi ladies!

DD is 6 months today, and has been munching on snacks of fruit and soft steamed or boiled veggies, and eats mushy spoon jar foods just as a bit of fun and 1 morning meal a day. I'm thinking I might try to start getting 2 meals in a day now and want one of them to be a dinner with us so thought I'd pop in here just to keep up to date and get advice like how old before she can eat things like eggs, meats, sauces (eg she loves mash spud, can I put tomato sauce or gravy on mine and still let her have some?) and I ate peanut butter while BF with no dramas, does that mean she can eat it too? Or is it too salty? Thanks in advance! X

you can get natural peanut butter tha doesn't have salt in it. I would go easy on salty or sugary things for now, yeah, but just depends what you feel comfortable with. I think teh allergy advice now is not to delay things like egg etc, so again, whatever you feel comfortable with.

    *le sigh*

and the worst mother in the world award goes to ...drummroll please ...

    ME!!

DS was arching and crying and not wanting his rice, meat and veggies ... I finally got him interested in them ... and he just wanted to play with and bite on the bowl!!

so after picking it all up and putting it back in the bowl for the third or fourth time, I gave up and gave him 2/3 of a pear and 1/2 a banana.

    screw it.

no way peanutter some kids are just picky at times

i cant get DD to do BLS she just sits there and doesnt like to anything other than chips but she will happily be spoon fed its so weird compared to DS who would not have a spoon anywhere near him from 8 months
