We named our children names that are hard to shorten until the last one. She has a 9 letter name and EVERYONE is desperate to shorten but we don' t want it shortened we chose it because we love the full name. She is 18mths old and still has not been shortened in name. I prefer nicknames for my kids that don't require shortening their beautiful name, we use these nicknames and very close friends and family started using them also!

My son dantae we thought we would call him tae never have always his full name and my dd nikkita we thought she would get Nikki but she doesn't, her brother calls her kita and that has stuck or she gets bubba.
My eldest DS is Isaac and i had every intention of shortening it to Zac, and i so all the time. DS2 i love the name Harrison but hate Harry so told everyone not to shorten it but every one does ( me included) but he is 5 now and hates being called Harry he tells most people my name is Harrison not Harry LOL
With DS1 - Harrison it's always been his full name except by his friends at schools & DS2 - Jaxon we haven't and we changed the spelling so it couldn't be easily shortened to Jack. This one i'm baking though we intend to call Abbey from day one but we are using Abigail as the full version on formal things though.
Yes. DD1's name is Gabriella and right from the start we always had the intention of shortening it to Gaby...she gets called both names and we are more then happy with both. DS is the same, his name is Alexander and we always knew that we would mainly call him Alex. DD2's name was not intended to be shortened but it has ended up that way and we really like the shortened version, but it was a shortening that we had never thought of IYKWIM?
DD's name is Rachelle (pronounced Rachel though - blame my ex for the extra letters) which is routinely shortened to Rach or Rachie. Never ever ever to Chelle, Shell or Shelly. Not the sort of thing to go on a birth certificate though, plus I regularly use her full name including middle name and not just when she's in trouble as well.
This one, well his prospective first name is easily shortened and probably will be, but I like the shortened version. I have discarded other names because I dislike what it gets shortened to (Lachlann in particular springs to mind, love Lachlann, hate Lachie). Nicknames and shortened versions are something I think it's important to consider when naming a child, whether you can live with a particular shortening or not given the tendency of people to do so.
DD no, DS yes. We chose DS's nickname when he was born and announced that was it. DD we announced what she was NOT to be called and she gets everything else instead
lol... I named my kids to be called their full name.... Joshua, I call Joshua (he hates that haha) and when he was little his aunty would always say Josh so I always when UA! haha... well actually we call him Smunchie rofl which he hates more... just a nickname which stuck from when he was like hmmmm really young, was munchkin... ummm then Oskar... he's pretty much just Oskar (or Ratbag) and then there's Nuggy.... yup ok... Elijah (do NOT call him Eli!! People take it on themselves to do that!! Some call him Lijy)... we call him Nugget/Nuggy/Nug lol.
So, anyway, nope I don't call them a name knowing that I'll call them by a nickname/shortened version etc.
Nope, kind of believe you name a child what you want to call them. We didn't think you could really shorten Parker, but of course the 3-5year old cousins came up with Parky... although DH's father calls him PKR
DS1 is Cooper and has always been called coops, Coopy, Coopy-j or Coopy James
DS2 (not even born yet) his name is Daylen Benjamin and he's already getting Daily and Daily-b
So far my kids names haven't been shortened which I like cos the shortened version of Bethany so doesn't suit her and u cant really shorten Flynn (although he gets Flynnie from some which I HATE) Our next bub will probably have its name shortened if it suits though cos both names we have chosen sound nice shortened
We chose DS's name because we liked both the long and shortened version. We had planned to call him by the shorter name but never have so I don't mind if other people do. His friends always shorten his name.
My two DD's names can't be shortened but people always seem to lengthen DD1's name. You can't win, can you?
We named our kids so they couldn't be shortened to something else.
Like Olive we chose to use the shortened version as the name. So we have a Nate...not Nathaniel.
