I only know of one Koby and it's my friend's son so to me I think boy. However, it does make a great girls name.
The meaning is ordinary though. I'll check my baby names book shortly and see what it says.
ETA: it's only in the boys section in my book and neither versions have meanings. Jacob, however, has the meaning you mentioned earlier so I guess that's why. Jacob was (is?) on our list but I hadn't considered the meaning (yet) but I'm not fond of it either!
First off I thought boy only because my sons friend is called coby. However in the baby books Scout is always found in the girls section but I still loved it for my boy and it suits him.
Fejoa Mum - the meaning is really only significant for this particular name. Having a name that means 'supplanter' for the baby born after the older sibling/s die just feels very wrong.
BAL - like you, I wasnt too fussed about meanings with DS1 but it became more important for DS2. I didnt want his name to have a negative meaning or feel like his name was defined by his brother's death ITMS. In the end, we feel he chose the name that most suited him.
If you like the sound of Koby, maybe you'll like names with similar sounds, such as Jodie, Ruby etc
I always thought it was a boy's name... but with names now-a-days i don't think calling a girl Koby is a problem... i guess make the spelling as feminine as possible... and i think KOBY is girly...
