DP & I cannot agree on a first name. Bubs middle name will be John (same as DP's).
DP just said he'd be happy to call bubs Jack.
Jack would be after DP's grandfather he never met (he's fathers father). He died in DP's fathers arms when FIL was in his 20's. DP's whole family always remark how much he looks like Grandpa Jack. So the name has meaning.
But I dont like it that much. I get the meaning behind the name, I like that part of it. But Jack John? I'm not one who says "oh you cant use this name because it doesnt go with the middle/last name" etc etc, but this combo is really awkward imo. But I suppose middle names are rarely said anyway.
And Jack is HUGELY popular. I dont mind semi-popular names ... but Jack's hugely used nowadays.
DP cracked it with me when I told him I dont really like it and accused me of shutting down all his names lol. He does the same friggen thing to the names I come up with! Hahaha.
We have two other names we keep going back to:
Xavier &
Ben
DP loves Xavier but is unsure about it as he has a friend whos little 5yo is called Xavier. We see the friend occasionally, but not he's little son as he lives with his mother. I really like Xavier, but cant get a definite yes or no "its off the list" from DP.
Ben was my suggestion, DP liked it at the start but I think he's gone cold on it now. But again, wont give me a definite yes or no as to taking it off the list!
Anyway, any thoughts on Jack? Or even the other two?
I love Jack but I agree that it sounds odd with John as the middle name.
I love Ben - would he be Benjamin John or just Ben John? I think Benjamin John sounds much more finished if that makes sense?
I hope you both come to an agreement soon. I know how hard it is to agree on a name. Perhaps see if your DP can at least think about a name you like for a few days, play it over in his head with the middle name he wants and then give an answer, rather than shooting it down (like my DH used to do!).
Good luck
Can you have two middle names? Not sure which way around you'd prefer it, but maybe lengthen one of the middle names (I.e. Jackson, johnathan) when Its the middle name to help make it sound "right"?
I  jack obviously but not if you are using John as a middle name they are dirivatives from the same name many older johns are known as Jack
and even though Jack was #1 when my son was born I am yet to run in to a Jack of the same age I actually only know of 3 other Jacks one is 7yr, one is 6ys and the other is 2yrs so even though it is a popular name you may not run into any other Jacks
What Rach said - Jack was originally a nickname for John. And as you said, it sounds quite awkward.
Technically Ianto's name comes down to John John as well (Ianto is sorta the Welsh version of Jack, actually) but they were so dissimilar that it didn't bother us.
