Love the name Lola, if you are a little worried about the song and what ppl may portray her to be like maybe choose something very similar like the others have suggested. Also love Laila and Lila, a friend of mine has a Laila and what a gorgeous little girl she has and i love Lila unfortunately DF didn't!
Come on who really cares if it is a nickname or not, look at the weird combinations ppl put together these days anyway and i seriously wouldn't have even thought of it as a nickname anyhow. Also a little girl isn't going to be portrayed as a sexy/stripper type figure at a delicate tender age!

My honest opinion is that I really don't like it. For one thing, it's a nickname for Dolores. It doesn't stand up well with your son's name- he has a full name, she would just get a nickname.
I do think of both the songs you mentioned, and the book Lolita. It has sort of a sexy/strippery feel to it that I don't like, and it seems a little bit trendy and downmarket. It just has too many negative associations.

I really like Ruby and Lucy a lot better.

Similar names that aren't nicknames and don't have any negative associations that I can think of: Lana, Lara, Leila, Lila, Lilia, Lily, Lora, Lori.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that this forum was a place to share names for babies whether real, made-up, unusual, unique etc etc, not a forum where "real / original /traditional" (or whatever you want to call them) names are debated. While each are entitled to their own opinion of course, I can't help noticing an underlying theme where unless a name is "real" or has some long-term origin it is knocked? Maybe it's just me getting my back up??

For the record I like Lola... it's sweet and innocent and does not conjure up stripper connotations for me!

I really love Lola - and I have a Lucy and a Ruby of my very own! I thought of Lola for Imogen but I thought two L names in the family was a little difficult...

    It's quite irrelevant I think weather it's a derivative or not - it's a great name!

Oh, you are gonna hate me but maybe it's best i mention this just so you are warned & you can look into it yourself somewhere ???

I was at my best friends birthday party two years ago & her cousin (whom i adore ... she is lovely) was telling me a story about someone she knows that named her daughter LOLA. Anyway, she really went on about it saying "Who would name their daughter Lola" . I was a bit confused with her attitude about the name but she went on to tell me there was a movie or something that was well known years ago where there was a prostitute named Lola. And that it's an old well used name for i think French prostitutes. Strangely when she told me this story it kind of sounded familiar.

Apologies, for the wishy-washy story as i was tired with a new baby & it was late like midnight when she told me this story BUT it truely stuck with me.

Anyway, i know a beautiful little girl name LYLA ... if that is of any help or suggestion !! ... I like LUCY too !!!

I adore Lola. I really love it, I think its sweet and adorable... if we are going to worry about songs and movies and this is a nick name and i know a horrid person called such and such so dont name your kid that... anyway, if we are going to go down that path when naming our kids then i dont think we would ever find a name that is good enough.

    Lola & ruby ... mmmm.

    Ruby's on our short list!

I think that with some of the sexual references its a good thing the current & future generations won't "get" it!

I love Lola. Lola & Declan - goes together nicely.

I wouldn't worry. Lola is not French for prostitute . Delila is a term used for prostitutes (or was in the past rather) but I'm not sure about Lola. I've never heard that. Maybe the person against Lola was getting confused with Lolita? The book/movie about a teenager being abused by her stepfather? Anyway, a name is what you make it and I wouldn't get tied up in connotations, refferences and meanings of names. Its a cute lively name and it sounds great with Declan. If you love it like I do, then use it.

Lola is a gorgeous name! I do automatically hear an english accent "But Charlie..." from Charlie and Lola but she is edible (for a book/cartoon charactor LOL) Ruby is super pretty too!
