Well DH and I thought we had finally settled on a first name for our little girl. However I have just realised that the name we chose is on the "most popular baby names for 2008" list.
Would this annoy you?
I mentioned it to DH this morning as we were making the bed and he didn't seem too impressed. What if she ends up going to school with six other girls all with the same name?
wahhhhhh The name we picked for this bub falls under my "not too common" list. But is in the top ten for 08!!!!! Im going to the BD&M site to make sure its victoria. If its another state, then I'll go with it anyway!
It doesn't bother me the ella's name is popular because i just love it! Ofcourse i would prefer it wasn't but its popularity wouldn't ever have made me change it!
it would bother me. dd1's name wasnt "popular" at all, most people hadnt even heard of it, until a couple of years after she was born - ever since its been in the top 100 and its annoying!
She was the first ever of her name in her school - then when she got to year 1 another kindy kid had very simialr name, then when she got to year 2 yet another kindy kid came along with same name, different spelling! annoys me greatly.....
My daughters name was on the top list in the year she was born.
She has never been in a class with another Madeleine though and she has only ever been 1 of 3 or so Madeleine's in her school (at 2 different schools)
The year i was born my name was in the top 20. I have only ever met a handful of other people with the same name as me. There was certinaly never another in my class, oh i tell a fib there was a girl in year 9 and 10 who came and left with the same name.
If you love it, just go for it.
ETA. I was just looking at some statistics. (i know! bored!) in 2007 there were apporximately 43,000 baby girls born in NSW, the top baby name isabella made up only 531 of these. So although it was the most popular, there are thousands of babies with names other than that one! In fact it only makes up about 1% of all babies born.

Back in 1970 my sister had no name after birth for 2weeks
My friends daughter is an Emily ... there were four other Emily's in her prep grade ... and you know what my friend & her Hubby didn't give a hoot & 12yrs later after her birthdate they are still happy with it
As much as i'm not a fan of the popular names list ... YOU BOTH go with whatever name you both like/love
(If it helps you ... we had no boys name right up until the birth ... and we gave birth to a girl ... & had two girl's names picked out but didn't decide on her name until 3hrs after her birth ... the name just came to us by looking at her & it just FELT RIGHT) !!
Gee I'm surprised that my kids names aren't on that top 10 list
heehee
Seriously though, if you like the name - go with it. It may be on the most popular list - but like Falguni said, its a small percentage of the actual amount of babies born around that time.
I never met anyone else with the same name as me (and only know a few that are like famous people!) but I know a whole boatload of Mel's!!!!!!
