The big story: Charlie for boys and girls
The big story in 2010 is the rise of Charlie – for both boys and girls. On the boys list Charlie rose from the 19th position last year to number 10 in 2010. On the girls' list, Charlie itself doesn’t quite make the top 20, however the girl’s name Charlotte has risen to number three, from the sixth position last year and Charlie (or Charli) is the common abbreviation for this name.

So it seems you’ll be hearing a lot more of ‘Charlie!’ in the playground, and you are just as likely to see a boy or a girl running to the call. In this time of strictly feminine and masculine names, it’s a real change to see a unisex name gaining in popularity.

    Trends for girls
Lily takes the top spot again this year, after being knocked off by Isabella last year. It looks like the Twilight influence has dropped off and Isabella, while still popular, is down to 7th place. Ella has also dropped seven spots from 2009 to the 13th position.

Ruby has had a huge rise in popularity this year, going from 14th place in 2009, into the second position. Could it be the Ruby Rose effect? She has been busy this year hosting the ARIAs, MTV, launching her own fashion range and a stint at The 7PM Project. Her sexy rock image doesn’t seem an obvious inspiration for naming a baby. But perhaps parents are thinking ahead.

The trend that Bec and Lleyton Hewitt influenced after they named their first daughter Mia seems to be sticking around. Mia is again on the rise from the 12th position last year to 8th in 2010. However, they haven't had the same impact with their new baby, Ava. Ava has fallen from 8th position last year to 10th, not getting the boost that Mia did when the Hewitt’s chose the name for their first born.

Names on the up also include Charlotte (up 3 places), Sophie (6), Amelia (2), Zoe (3). Other names that have dropped their place on the list include Olivia (down 4 places), Emily (4) and Sienna (3).

The only new name in the top 20 list for girls is Hannah which comes in at 19th place, replacing Grace which fell from 13th place in 2009 to be out of the list this year.

    Trends for boys
Jack is retaining it’s hot status as name of choice for baby boys this year. After a year at number 2 position in 2008, Jack has been back on top in 2009 and 2010. Meanwhile the popular Lachlan has dropped into 7th position from second in 2009 and first in 2008.

Cooper continues its gradual rise to position number two this year from third last year and sixth in 2008.

The big winner in this year’s boys list is Lucas, going up ten places from the 16th spot in 2009 to number six this year. It would be hard not to attribute this increase in popularity to the publicity around the 2010 World Cup and the very handsome Lucas Neill as Australian captain. Neill is known for his dedication to his family including his two year old twins. He is fiercely protective of their privacy and is also dedicated to work with many charity organisations.

Three new names made the list this year, showing more movement than there has been for a while. Samuel, Jacob and Ryan are all newcomers in positions 18, 19 and 20 respectively. Connor, Oscar and Alexander on the other hand have left the top 20 list for 2010.

The names which are on the rise in popularity also include Oliver (up 4 places), Noah (5), James (5) and Jackson (6). The names slipping down the list this year include Joshua (down 9 places), William (4), Riley (5) and Max (6).

Well the names we are thinking of using aren't on there at all! Yay! hehe

Charlotte wasn't on there either the year we used it...Does that make me a trend setter?
