Using same name as a friend's child.. Would you do it?

My husband and I are expecting our first baby next week and we can't decide on a boys name ... Last night we finally agreed on one name that we both like, but realized it is the name of one of his friends sons names. It's not a particularly close friend, we might catch up with them once a year or so.... But still. Is it bad taste to use your friends childrens names?? It's not a particularly popular name so I wonder what they'd think. I can't decide if I would be annoyed, myself, if someone we knew used our girls name, for example.

Can I get your opinions, especially if you've been through the same dilemma, or had your childs name used by a friend?

If you were close to them then I don't think it would be right, but if you only see them once a year or so then I say go for it. They may even like that you've used the same name.
I wouldn't mind if someone not too close to me used my childrens names.

I would probably just run it past them, see what they think

I say go for it - a name is just that - a name. They don't have copyright over it

FWIW - I would be stoked if someone thought Aricyn was an awesome name as much as I did and decided to use it for their child as well!!!

I would use the name you both like. As Mel said, they dont have copyright over it.

    i would do it

i found myself in a similar situation when i was pregnant with dd

a friend of ours was pregnant too, she was 3 months ahead of us, she was a friend, but not someone we would deal with on a day to day basis. would hardly see each other

when i found out she had named her dd the same as ours, initally i was upset and started to think of different names, but nothing touched my heart, i was so set on this name, and so we stayed with the original name

it has been 8 yrs since dd was born and we have lost touch with this friend, we have moved town and i have no idea where she lives now.

all the best with whatever you decide xxx

If you are concerned, then call them ... it's not like you heard their kids' name and went "oh yeah, that's it ... "

Brilliant... Thanks so much girls ! My husband has mentioned calling his mate to run it past him, but yeah... I really think it's our name! Appreciate all your responses, I feel better about it already :-)

i wouldn't be asking your friends cause at the end of the day it will be them saying yes or no to the name of YOUR baby ... Unless you want to just do it just of out of politeness but you could possibly run the risk of regrets if they said *no* but later on you might wish you never asked and you wanted to name your child that name after all, ... and don't forget sadly not all friends will last a lifetime unlike your baby who will be in your life forever !!

If they are not a close friend i would go ahead with naming your child the same name & i wouldn't be bothered asking them under no circumstances if you are not close to them & don't see them often.
