Not too sure about Velvet- I think it's to do with the connotations maybe? But reading through and considering materials I was reminded that I once saw the name "Calico" as a suggestion, which I thought was kind of cute. (Girl)

I second LIMESLICE ... my 1st reaction was the movie ... i thought of horses ... and then later of the Velvet soap ... But yeh do kind of like as a name but wouldn't use myself for those reasons mentioned prior
