Just wondering if someone can help me out with some questions- I would love to buy a wrap (already got a Manduca and ring sling), but I am not sure what length I need to get? Are smaller lengths better for beginners?
My chubba bubba is 10kgs at 6 months and I am guessing that the carries I will need to do will have to be heavy duty, particularly as he gets older. I really don't want to have to keep upgrading wraps for length. Thanks in advance.
I was told that no matter the size of bub, a size 6 is best for beginners unless mum's on the big side (though I'm a size 18 and still do everything I need to with a 6) I'm still somewhat of a newb too though, I only have 6s and generally stick to one carry all the time I'll be right back at square one with a newborn!
I liked a 5 as a beginner. Although my first wrap was a 3, and it was great too. Not too much tail to fuss about with, easy for quick rucks, hip cross carry etc.
NicNac can you get to a local meet up and try a few first? Vatanai are regularly quoted as a good first wrap. Also check out the BWBSS Facebook group for second hand wraps, pics and advice.
NicNac, definitely get along to a local meet if you can and try some things (if you haven't already).
Vatanais are great starter wraps, but at 10kg you may want to go for something a bit heftier. Although, the Vats would be fine still in multi-layer carries, particularly the jacquard ones.
How big are you? I generally recommend starting with a rucksack carry for back carries, which most people can do in a 4 or 5.
Thanks for your responses. I'm a "liker" of the local baby wearing group on FB but haven't made it to a meet up yet. Will definitely do so before purchasing anything, they seem to be a really proactive, helpful group.

DS is rocking the Manduca in a back carry now and even slept in it during my first shift back at the local Canberra toy library. Soooo glad I bought it.
I am thinking about getting a woven wrap. I have used HAB, Close Carrier, Ergo, Scootababy. I can't justify big money but have seen some for under $100, which I can do.
I will have 3 littlies and my 2 are very energetic so hands free for the bub will be handy.
I like the Close Carrier for ease, but it feels bulky and the tails annoy me.
The only maybe issue with a wrap is i'm not a small person, especially in the first 6 months post baby and i don't like the feel or look if it is extentuates my wobbly bits. Are there different wraps (not as soft?) or techniques that can help here?

Have you used a woven wrap at all? I presume that's what you mean.
The 100% cotton Ellville and Vatanai wraps often go quite cheap and they're good for starters. Have a look on the BWBSS fb page. There are other cheap brands, also. Often 2nd hand is better as they get softer and easier to use with use (although some are just fine when brand new).
NicNac, you could try a 5 or a 6. But it will also depend what you want to do with it. Front carry? Back carry? etc...
Hot1, I started with two Ellevills and one I won't get rid of for anything. They weren't that expensive. If you're used to a HAB, tying a woven is not that different once you get started. I'd suggest a size 6, based on both your experience with HAB and your concerns about your own size (not that that needs to be a limiting factor - it's more a question of experience and the number of different carries you can try).
There are some amazing flattering carries out there. Check out Christina's reckless back carry on you tube - I think that's the one. I second the advice to go with a 6. I happen to know of a cheap 6, and I will PM you about it.
