Questions with tummy to tummy carry

I have an ergo with the infant insert and a ring sling that I use with Miss A. At the moment I'm doing the tummy to tummy carry with her little legs froggey'd up. She is really comfy in there for the most part but every now and then she's kicking around a bit, pushing up etc.

What sort of age/size should she be when I start putting her in the ring sling and leave her legs dangling, and put her in the ergo with dangling legs and without the insert? From memory the side of the insert box says I think 4 months but there's no way she'd (A) fit and (B) be happy in it for that long. I put her in it the other day to do the shopping without the insert (which was inconveniently on the dining table at home) and while she seemed fairly comfy I wasn't all that happy with her position IYKWIM.

Also, she was really unsettled against me in the ring sling the other day so I flipped her around and did the kangaroo carry. Is that ok at her age or is she really a bit young still?

    Thanks wise ladies.

For the ring sling, now should be fine, particularly if that's what she wants.
For the ergo, it's size and also head/neck control. the body is fairly short, so they need to able to sit themselves up in there.

re kanga carry - You mean front facing? She's probably a bit young for that yet - her neck control needs to be quite good. Also they can get very over stimulated very quickly.

Ok, so I tried putting her in the ring sling with her little legs hanging and it was a disaster - the poor little thing almost slid out the bottom in the school carpark. I put her in like I would if her legs were keeping froggied, but then put my hands up from the bottom and pulled them out. I thought there was still enough fabric under her bottom but obviously not - just as well I kept my hand under her!

I've had a look at the video from the sakura bloom website and I seem to be doing what she is doing, but its just not working for me. Does that mean her little legs are still too short?

THanks MadB. Don't know what I'd do without your advice on all things boobs and slings!

I think you just need to get that seat deeper. was the fabric spread knee to knee? also, her knee-bum-knee should make an M shape. The legs shouldn't hang, really

You can see some tips in these videos: (just google on youtube for more!)
(all of these do it slightly differently, so hopefully one will work for you)

Thanks. They're really useful. Have managed to get her in now so I don't feel she's going to drop out but still need some work -she hates having her feet tucked in now so we're going to have to get it right. Not proving to be the quick and easy way to manage school pick ups/drop offs I was hoping for but all due to me being such an uncoordinated git

It took me a while to get the hang of using the RS with legs out. Love the 'fill your bra' method. I do that and reach in between DD2 and I to pull the fabric up between us. Another thing it took me a while to realise is that it is possible to have the bottom rail too tight.

That's definitely where I was going drastically wrong - every time she felt insecure I just pulled that rail tigher! Lucky she's a patient little thing though with all the pulling and hoisting I'm putting her through. I'm sure there are plenty of parents and grandparents having a good laugh at me doing my little sling dance in the car park each afternoon at school ;-)

I find the Ergo really uncomfortable for bub until they reach about 5-6 months depending on their size. Arlia is 20 weeks now and I have started using the Ergo instead of the hugabub as she's an ok size for it now. I still find that her little bottom doesn't fully "sit" in the Ergo (there's still pocket of fabric where her bottom will be when she's bigger), but I like the convenience of being able to loosen the Ergo and breastfeed her in there (something I never mastered with the hugabub). My kids were never comfortable with the insert so we used the hugabub which I loved. It has such great head support, especially when they are sleeping and you cover one side of their head securely to your chest

Once they are the right size though I adore the Ergo. I even use it as a back carry for my 19 month old
