what to use with newborn until ergo

Hi everyone,

ok so this is our first bub and I really like the idea of baby wearing. I've done a bit of research and would love an ergo, will probably end up getting one later (will try it with bub since can't really use it when newborn unless I get the insert but seems a bit flimsy). My only problem is deciding what to do for when they are little. I’m due in the hottest time of the year here in Perth so I'm also trying to work out what’s best for that. I have been given as hand-me-downs a baby bjorn and a "snug as bug" adjustable ring sling.

I really like the idea of the sling specially for breast feeding but it seems massive (I am 1.64m or 5'4' and dh is 6'5' or 1.98m ), the person who gave it to me never used it cause her baby got lost in it. It seems that the bub would sit way to low and put pressure on my back.

What do you guys think, do I just stick with the sling and baby bjorn until I can put bub in the ergo? Also I guess wait until bub is born and try them out?? Or should I get another carrier now so I am ready. I was thinking of getting a fitted sling probably a nurture sling or hotsling? I like the HAB but it seems really hard to put on and probably to hot for summer.

Hey there, You can get an infant insert for the ergo and use that from birth as well.

I used a pouch for my newborn till he was 6 months old, but he is on the lighter side. Excellent for BF and for Sleeping.I also use the Mei Tai from birth and still do its the easiest and quickest and a cross between the hab and a structured carrier. ( I also wrap, with a diddy and a storch)

I would ditch the Bjorn, but thats just me. too risky and you shouldn't use them till bubs is 8 lb.s. it has no support for bubs head and they dangle rather than sit which is bad for spinal compression. They are only popular and the first brand people think of because they have big advertising dollars not because they are necessarily the best. Well thats my opinion anyway. Besides they also kill your shoulders as that is where bubs is dangling from.

glad to hear you are keen to babywear, its just wonderful.. best part is its addictive, your best bet is to get a variety for you and bubs.

Thanks pip2jays. yeah I really think the ergo is the go just a bit unsure about buying the newborn insert looks a bit flimsy really want a sling i think just a bit confused if I should stick with the ajustable ring i've got even if it looks massive or buy a fitted sling for me and maybe dh can use the ajustable one since he is a lot taller. anyways thanks for your help.

i used a HAB (hug-a-bub) which was great. My daughter was 4lb 15oz and she fit fine into it from day dot. She's now 16 months old and 9kg, and we still used it often. We're lookin at upgrading to an ego, when finances allow. But either a sling or a HAB is great. And if u take great care of it, you can chuck it on ebay or something when you're finished with it

I had a sling, but was never shown how to use it for a newborn & as u said Bodhi just seemed to get lost in it. In th end i just ened up using my hand me down baby bjorn.

Have you been into a shop where they sell the ergo? I went to try mine on b4 i bought it just to make sure it was what i wanted & needed(its awesome might i add). That way you can see if the insert is flimsy or not.

I think it will depend on your baby. At least you will have a few things to try.
My DS was really long and the sling lying down in newborn style just didnt work for us. I am using it now that he can sit up though. I also use a baby wrap (google mama toto) where I wrap a piece of material around (similar to a HAB but a lot cheaper). It is quick to get a hang of and would have been perfect when he was a newborn because it is very supportive. Although DS was an autumn baby. If it gets really hot, you may find the pram to be the best option until the colder weather hits. Otherwise perhaps a sling. Play around and dont be disappointed if what you expected doesnt quite work as there is definitely a baby wearing option for most people.

Thanks guys. Amy thats a good idea I might go and have a look at the ergo I think theres a shop in freo that sells them. The HAB looks great but yes its expensive and seems so hard to put on! I guess I might have to wait until bub is born and see what he fits in.

Someone on here posted about a sling called a baby rock which is actually mesh so is a lot cooler than a normal sling. Maybe that would be a good thing to check out if you find the sling style works well for you.

I looked up baby rock lots good, definetly handy for hot weather but it has buckeles and is expensive! anyways might go and check out the ergo baby insert and see if that would work or who warm it is if not will probably buy a nurture slign its fitted so hopefully smaller and its only $30.

Hi Mel,

Just thought i'd let you know I am 5ft 2 and I have a hug a bub. It's fantastic. I've never used it in the pea pod position for feeding but it is really easy to tie. I admit it was a little daunting at first but i'm getting really good it. My hubby likes wearing our baby in it too. Plus when it gets dirty you just throw it in the machine. It is especially good for wearing a bub that won't sleep as it gently rocks them to sleep.

I'd say hug-a-bub or a ring sling. The advantage of a ring sling is the feeding thing.

Can you sew or know someone who can. It is really easy to make a ring sling, and if you are concerned about baby getting lost, make the width of the sling a little less. I made my own ring sling for DD and I love it

Also, do you know someone who can show you how to use a ring sling. It does take a little practise, but is brilliant once you get it.

The snug as a bug needs repostioning until you are comfortable. When it is on properly, it works a treat. You shouldn't feel any back or shouldr pressure. For litlle ones, they do get covered a bit by the fabric but they stay asleep! If you are around the Frem Markets, stop in at the stall and they will show you how it's meant to go.

thanks for the tip. I will do that thats a great idea! Little Bohemians sells ergo I think its in the stokist list. its a great shop I've been meaning to go there but heard great things about it lots of cool toys.
