Just something that is starting to bug me a bit and was hoping to get some opinions on it. DS still doesn't clap his hands. He will bang two objects together by holding them in his hands but wont physically clap his hands together. Is this normal? He points and his pincer grip is developing so dont think its affecting any of his finer motor skills so not overly concerened but its just something at the back of my mind. I wont tell you how many times i sing "if your happy and you know it " during the day but he isn't getting the idea!
My DS (also a Lachlan) was almost 13 months when he first clapped, so it doesn't sound unusual to me. I'm sure he'll be clapping non-stop in no time and giving you a break from singing that song LOL
I think clapping is like walking - some babies do it really early and others really late and the rest are in between eg. DD2 clapped at around 6m but her little friend who is almost 13m has only just started - both kids are normal developers.
Sam is nearly 13 months old... He's only recently started clapping. Every time we would try to get him to clap, he would just look at us like we were expecting him to do something stupid. He can do it - but apparently he doesn't really see a point to doing it and so doesn't do it very often. He used to love it when we clapped his hands together for him... now he grabs our hands and claps them together for us.
But... Sam doesn't point. Should he be pointing by now?
I wouldn't worry too much. He is probably just busy learning other things to be bothered with clapping. My DS is the same. He was showing all the signs of walking etc but has stopped and is now being more vocal.
DD doesn't clap either. She pats her legs instead. She took ages to crawl, but was/is an early walker.
She doesn't point either, but is great at communicating what she wants (i.e. grab my face and turn it in the direction while gesturing and kicking her legs for me to move and vocalising "errr" lol).
For those concerned about pointing- my DS didn't point until 16 or 17 months, which is quite late. The MCHNs were pretty concerned at the time, but it seems he was just a late pointer- in all other respects he is quite 'normal' and now he is pointing at EVERYTHING!!
meh.....dont worry to much chicky. DS1 clapped at 8 months, DS2 clapped at 3 and DS3 clapped at 20 months. DS3 has just started waving....he turned 2 last week.
What im trying to say is...kids do things when their ready. Yes its easy to stress when you see other kids doing 'age appropriate' things.....watch out, he'll be doing your head in with it soon enough
Thanks for the reassurance everyone. Im not overly worried about it but its just one of those things at the back of my mind iykwim. Good to know its all quite normal. Guess he thinks why should he clap when i do it so much already lol!
