We put DD in at 19 months. She would get so upset if we even walked into her room (even if she was asleep) and attempted to put her in her cot. Since we put her in the bed, we have a beautiful bedtime routine where she is happy to climb in herself. Best thing we did at the time.
DD went in at 15 months, she had been sleeping on a cot mattress on the floor for a couple of months beforehand because she was a shocking sleeper in a cot! She has slept much better since being in a bed.
DD was 16months old and all of a sudden peaceful sleep times were an horrendous ordeal. Took me a week to figure out it was the cot....she's never really been a fan of being caged in anyway. Got her a bed and never looked back. She's never had a rail and only fallen out being stupid, but she sleeps like a log. At the start we left the feet off her ensemble so it sat on the floor. The reason we went straight for an ensemble instead of a toddler bed is that toddler beds use the same mattress as the cot and at that age she was already getting cramped.
DS has never ever slept in a cot and has always just had a bed with a rail or my bed.
DS was 22 months - we needed the cot for DD1.
DD1 was 14/15 months - I didn't want her to feel like she was being kicked out when DD2 came along, so we switched her over early.
DD1 was 13 months (well still is 13 months..lol) - DH broke her cot and the older two share a double bed at night, so the toddler bed was free.
DS has been on a mattress on the floor since he was just under 10months. i would co-sleep with him from when i went to bed. he just never liked the cot & we did co-sleep in mine & DP's bed but then we moved him to his own room.
for us it was more about how bad he was in a cot rather than him being technically ready for a big bed. we've tried the cot converted to a toddler bed but the mattress is still the easiest because we can settle him lying next to him - which is the easiest in his case.
he's pretty much ready now (18.5months) for us to put the bed together properly i think - we've just held off because it's a matress & base & a king single so it's quite big.
We put DD in a bed about 2 weeks ago at basically 14 months. She has adjusted to it pretty well only fallen out I think once maybe twice. She broke the sliding gate door bit of her cot so it kinda forced our hand to change her sleeping setup.
