Hi all. DS is one in a couple of months (I can't believe it!) and was just wondering a couple of things about giving a party. I thought you experienced mums might be able to help me out. The kids coming will be of varying ages (from 6 months - 7 years).
1. What food should I serve (party is from 10 am - 12 noon)
2. What games could I have to keep the kids entertained
3. What things could I stick in party bags
Any other advice is most welcome too. Thanks in advance for any replies.
Its exciting isnt it. It really depends on how much you want to do and how much you want to spend. Ive done pretty much every party you could possibly do but for first birthdays i tend to keep it to a minimum. For Sammy's birthday we had a teddy bear picnic theme so the kids brought their teddybears, we had a teddybear cake, honey sandwiches, honey joys etc and hot food. We played teddy bear games like drop the teddybear (drop the hanky) and teddybear statues.
Bouncy castles are great fun to occupy a range of kids though. We have used them several times and they have always been a big bit. The old macdonald farms too with all the little animals as well look great. I actually was interested in doing that for Sammy's 2nd birthday but it is a bit pricey ($400+) so we are going to the zoo instead.
For lolly bags ive done a range from healthy snacks like honey popcorn, dried fruits, right through to the lollies and sherbets etc. I guess it depends on the ages of children coming.
We have Alex's first birthday party this weekend and have a variety of ages coming too. We opted for the farm animals but got quotes for 1 hr for between $190-220. It can be seen as extravagant by some but we know he will love them as will the other kids, oh and it keeps them all entertained too!
We are then doing a sausage sizzle - easy to feed the masses! And then birthday cake with some other sweets like cupcakes and a couple of other cakes/sweets that family members are making - really easy really. (our party is also from 10-12).
We are also making use of a bubble machine - you can get them for around $15 from Toys r us and the like. Basically you pour the mixture in, set it on the ground/table and it "spews" out hundreds of bubbles. Kids of all ages love it and it gets them running around too - once again, easy entertaining.
In past for DD's party and other 1 yeard old parties that have been too most tend to play pass the parcel and thats about it - the young kids dont really understand any other games.
Oh and another thing that works well for young kids is a ball pit of some sort.
Wow, I love some of these ideas, they'll come in handy for Danielle's 2nd birthday.
For her first birthday I just kept it simple. We had the ball pit and sand pit which the littlies loved. But they all spent a lot of time playing with the toys Danielle had just been given. Pass the parcel is good fun, and some music and dancing, like the hookey pookey.
For food I served fruits, fairy bread and party pies and sausage rolls. Funnily enough it was the fruit that the kids went for first. And of course there was birthday cake. I didn't do any lolly bags, but at one party we went to they all got a little toy, like a pair of sunglasses, which lasts a lot longer than lollies.
