1st (and last) ride in an Ambulance

I had to call for an Ambulance last night for Miss Emily

DH was on night shift and i was home alone with Miss B in bed sound asleep and Miss Em gasping for breath! it was the most scariest night of my life!

I called for an Ambulance (against my rules because i work for the QAS) and they rushed me and my girl off to hospital

She stayed the night in hospital! Turns out she has Croup!

I was so scared for my baby girl! i feel for any parent that has gone through this, or worse! it is not something we as parents should ever have to go through, and definalty not something our bubba's should have too either!

So i have been told that the next few days and nights may be a bit rough - any advice from anyone who has been through this or simular?

I made Miss Em promise me last night that i will never be making another trip with her to hospital again! and that the only times she is aloud back into hospital is when she is 30 and having a baby of her own or when she is 100 and feeling a bit off!

Huge hugs! That must have been scary, I remember a few days ago finding out the air ambulance were going to take my boys so I understand that fear!
Hope your little one feels better soon I've never had to deal with croup so im sorry I have no advice for you.
Let's hope our little ones are out of hospital soon (cant remember if your little one is in hospital still, dumb Tapatalk)

Oh that is scary! I hope your DD is feeling better soon. Croup is nasty. DD was treated for it recently but it didn't really work - they've now tested us both for whooping cough (I'm really unwell, DD is on the mend).

I hope you DD can get some rest and fight it off

I had to call an Ambo because DS1 woke up vomiting and couldn't breathe so i understand how scary it is, anyway because we are so regional when he started improving i huddled him into the car and drove him myself cos they were going to be an hour plus - this all being at 4am in the morning. He wasn't diagnosed until 2 days later when we were in Perth and he wasn't improving so took him to another doctor, the problem was at the hospital the nurses in ED didn't think he was bad enough to call the doctor in so he didn't even get assessed by a doctor. He was put onto Prednisone which i medicated him over three days i think and started coming good with the first couple of doses on the first day. DS2 come down with the same thing a week later but because i knew what we were dealing with i told the hospital what the deal was but i had to take him back up the hospital everyday for them to administer the Prednisone because of his age.

OMG - there must have been something about last night, because my DD did exactly the same thing and ended up in ER with the diagnosis of Croup.

It was so scary seeing her not being able to breath - so I understand where you are coming from.

Did they give your DD oral steriods? They gave my DD a dose which is meant to help stop any of those 'bad beathing' episodes happening again. My DH was home so we jumped in the car and drove to hospital. They told me that if she has another bad turn to just call the ambulance and they can treat her at home with nebulised adrenaline - they said to call regardless as they can very quickly take a turn for the worse, so you did the right thing calling the ambulance.

Let me know how you go tonight and I will keep you updated from this end also.

Keep her elevated with cushions or pillows under the mattress, add extra clothing to keep her warm and use a vaporizer to help keep the airways moist. Sometimes the only thing you can do is sleep with them holding them upright. Hope Miss E gets better quickly it's horrible.

OMG how scary!! Thank goodness she is ok!

My older sisters kids suffered from croup, her middle child especially (he also has bad asthma) she couldnt take them outside after about 5pm til they were teenagers because it would set it off!!! i think her case is extreme though & not the norm IYKWIM

I'm sure there are heaps of parents in here who have had kids with croup & can offer advice.

MrsS - how are your boys going? that would of been hard seeing them go to hospital via air ambulance! did you get to go with them?

Taurean - how are you and DD going? did the test for whopping cough come back neg? i hope so!

Danniim - my gosh! what a horrible thing to have to have gone through! its so scary seeing our bubba's so sick isn't it! and the whole difficulity in breathing thing is horrible! i hope you never have to go through that again with bubba #3

Janie71 - how is your bubba? please tell me things didn't get worse! yep they put my DD2 on oral steroids! i hated the thought of them but they have certainly helped her!

black_rose - i don't think we have turned the vaporiser off - and i brought her a pillow which i think helped too! thank you

Kimmi- i work for the ambulance service - so it's kinda like a "rule" to not call "work" if that makes sense! but hey i needed too and i did! would never not do it in an emergency like that!


so we are on day 3 and now she is starting to show signs of improvement which is good! she still sounds very hoarse when she coughs or makes noises - nights are the worse - but she is smiling again which is great!

Aw hon that sounds just horrible! I too hope that she makes a speedy recovery and there are no more trips to the hospital
