DD2 had her checkup today with the CHN. I brought up the fact that DD2's feet roll out when I try to stand her up. CHN checked her and was a bit concerned the she can't hold her own weight on her feet at all. She also mentioned the way DD2 practacly does the splits when she is sitting. CHN said not to panic yet and she'll check her again in another month. But if DD2 isn't able to hold her weight by that time then she'll need to have an assesment with a physio.
Just wondering if anyone have bubs that have taken a while to be able to stand with support. Or know what kind of problems might cause her to not be able to stand.
I should mention that she doesn't yet crawl, she can move forward a little, but tends to use her arms more than her legs.
My DS didn't start crawling until he was about 8 months old (maybe a bit older) and has only just started to stand supported in the last month. He just wasn't interested before. So different to my DD who crawled and stood all in the same week at 7 months. I think every baby is just so different. If the mch is not concerned, don't worry about it. DS didn't seem to need to practice doing all these things as much as DD did. Though she started earlier, she took a while to get it, DS just started doing them one day and was able to do them.
I hope everything starts to happen for your DD soon.
I had a child at work who was similar. She didn't hold her weight either when you held her up, she was quite floppy and didn't crawl till fairly late and didn't walk till well over one. There were concerns about her develpment but now she seems to have caught up with things.
Just thought I would let you know that my first dd she did not sit or roll till 10 months and couldn't hold her weight till she was over one and did not pull to stand and hold weight on her own at all till 14 or so months and didn't walk unaided till 16.5 months.
Hope this easiers some of your fears....I did see a physio just to set my mind at ease that there was nothing wrong.
WHAT?? what a load of ballony!!!! lol sorry. But how many 8 month olds can hold them self up!? That CHN has no clue. Neither of my kids could hold their weight at 8 months. Neither does any of my gf's kids. DD cant still hold her weight now. But she is meeting her milestones, as did DS.
Hmmm i seriously would not worry one bit about that. If an 8 month old is holding their weight then i would say they are quite advanced. If she isnt doing it by about 18 months then maybe that would be something to look into but i think thats just added stress and worry that is really unnessesary hun.
My first bub didn't walk til 18months, and my second only recently started standing supported, maybe at 12 months? I found it's just because, being a second child, I don't have the time to encourage him to stand all the time. When I realised he wasn't standing I just would pull him to his feet when I was sitting, a bit at time - now he's standing just fine and climbing things.
Um...what's the moral of my story...oh yeah, that maybe if you just persist in getting bub to stand supported, then her legs will get stronger.
Thanks everyone, yep certainly feel better now. The crawling thing doesn't bother me because DD1 never crawled and didn't walk til 15 months. It's good to hear that she is not the only bub who's not in a hurry to do things.
Nelle, I think you might be right, I'll see how she goes if I spend a bit more time practising.
DD didn't EVER want to stand even with us holding her - as soon as you tried she would spring her feet up! She atrted pulling herself up on furniture at 15 months, standing by herself at 18 months and walking at 19 so there you go! She's completely fine too!
Your baby doesn't have to stand yet but if you were worried if she had lack of muscle tone then take to docs or specialist.
DD1 didn't sit for ages - months after everyone else at the same age. She then didn't crawl until ~ 14months and then walked a month later. She was happy enough just hanging out...and was quite chubby so I figured it was just a bit harder for her to get moving!
I reckon Nelle is on the money - definitely worth a bit of practice before you get too concerned.
Every bub is different - certainly if you are concerned about it I'd seek a GP/paeds opinion just to check out things.
Good luck!!!
