Oh a friend is studying nutrtion something or other and she said kids will never starve if they are feed iykwim, like unkless you have them locked away and are deliberatly not feeding them they will starve but if they are just fussy they will eat when hungry!
But get him the once over at the doctor to ease your mind xxx
I think its more the fact that he lost a kilo in such a small amount of time - we are just guessing that its been a month since we last weighed him. He hasn't been sick or anything (not dramatically sick) and we haven't noticed that he wasn't eating as much until this last week when he has really really gone off food.
Mel, how are his nappies? Is he going normally? Is he drinking a lot more than usual?
I know DD1 sometimes eats virtually nothing some weeks and then will eat heaps another week. Her appetite really seems to fluctuate. FWIW, she is 3.5 and weighs 14kg
I was a skinny kid, I remember mum saying the doctor used to be on her back to get me eating more - unfortuntately I am making up for it now
Go to the doctor if you need reassurance, but I am sure it will all be fine.
Nai - its funny you should mention about his nappies - he had one on for 4 hours today and it was bone dry when I took it off - that has NEVER happened with Mr Pees-a-lot.
But his next nappy which he had on for 3 hours was really wet?
Hmm maybe get him checked out if he isn't going as much as usual - however he may just be getting some bladder control . Try and keep his fluids up too if he isn't eating a lot.
He's drinking heaps - he's off his milk a bit though, its hard to get anything into him. Before he was at least having LOTS of fruit - now hardly anything (which of course would explain the weight loss I suppose)
But he always wants juice (I dilute it very heavily with water) or cordial (a dash in a big cup with lots of water) and he drinks it in about 2 seconds flat.. so not sure what to do with him.
Mel
DD is 2.5yo and 13.8kg. She lost about 1kg in 6 weeks before her 2nd birthday but that was after being sick for most of that time. If your worried take him to your gp/paed for a check. I did this with dd1 and she checked her fortnightly for a while and she regained the lost weight.
As others have said, different scales will give diferent readings, if the same scales are on different surfaces or uneven surfaces you can get diferent readings. If he is done a poo or jsut eaten a big meal (although if he is anything like my dd a large meal would be a miracle lol) and the time of day can alter the readings on a scale. Try and weigh him same time of day, same scales and on the same even surface ( we dont put the scales on the tiles anymore as they can vary by 1-2kg). Good luck, life with a fussy eater is not easy
we had the same problem with xavi, he went off his food and milk etc, and when i took him to the doctors, they found he had a throat and ear infection which i hadn't picked up on. since he had a dose of ab, he's been catching up on his food. he's a pretty skinny bugger too...
Mel, lily is only 11kg at 26mths. She hasn't put on any weight in about 3mths. But then the difference in that is that she eats like a horse. But I have read somewhere that it' normal for toddlers to only put on 1.5-3 kg a YEAR!
I would say just weigh him regularly at the same time fo day for a few weeks and see how he goes. Though with the pain thing you've said he does, maybe take him to the dr, jic.
It's so hard to know if it's serious or not with kids, but it's probably better to be safe than sorry.
